This is not a knock on people that do by the way.. I'm asking cause this super cool Yoko Bunny Figure is tempting me to open up to the hobby and question my priorities lolol

But ooh man the Price Point for a lot of em..

Just curious.. what's the appeal for you? How do y'all enthusiasts justify paying a couple hundred dollars for something that'll just sit on your shelf? Is it like a personal or a sentimental thing you've got for a certain character from a certain series?

I want the Yoko one cause I'm a Modest Perv, she's badass, and Gurren Lagann is an All Time favorite Anime of mine.

I've never done a big Figure purchase before so I'm thinking really hard on how bad I want it lmao

Collecting have always been fun, it's the same thing with collecting guns and swords. They are also neat room designs.

Collection based hobbies in general have an inherent appeal and sense of satisfaction at seeing them grow over time.
There is also the increased aesthetic from having something you enjoyed portrayed in a location you regularly see it. Not to mention just how appealing the figure looks independent of the sentimental value. Since figures in particular have some level of craftsmanship akin to say a unique design in a series of cards or something similar.

I’ll repeat what everyone else had said and say that collecting things is enjoyable. I also like decorating my room and displaying them.

As for the money justification, I’ve honestly spent my money on way dumber shit if you can believe it lol. If someone is trying to save money or if they have a lot of bills etc it’s obviously not the best decision because they ARE pretty expensive... but if you’ve got the money to spare ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I haven't bought any figures (just haven't got around to it but I find them cool), but instead I've bought manga, BDs, or show-related magazines. Though admittedly I have been eyeing this since last year:

It features three things that I absolutely adore: Kanbaru, Basketball, and Literature. I'll probably wait to buy it as a birthday present for myself. The price is a little over $200; which I don't think is outlandish if you limit your figure purchases to at most 1 per year.

I got a little Nanoha figurine for $6. It doesn't stand right so I have to lean it against a wall, and then she looks like she's walking. Sometimes it's nice to have an inspirational character sitting on my desk. Same way people put ornaments with quotes on them, on their desk.

Meanwhile, I have no display cabinet, which is just as well since I conveniently have no reason to splurge tens and hundreds of dollars on figurines.

Though to be honest, a good number of of figurines tend to be more about emphasizing the characters' sexuality. And I'm not too into that. I guess I could get the poseable ones to make them stare across the horizon confidently, but those are costly of course.
Avatar character is Gabriel from Gabriel DropOut.

I got a Miku one for about $40 at a convention. it's really tempting to get more but the good ones are so expensive.

This is the one i've been looking at for ages, but just haven't gotten it yet because it's so damn expensive just for something to sit on my desk.

I mean I buy merch from games or anime that I like to decorate my room with. I think having figures on a shelf lined up not only looks cool but it’s kinda a thing of pride to show off what interests me. If figures weren’t so expensive I’d have my shelves filled already with anime characters (I just want Megumin and Sakura Matou but alas my paychecks go elsewhere).

I can say I'm trying to financially support the anime I like. If something makes money there will be more of it (or something similar to it).

But actually that's not my concern when I'm buying figures, I just like them and I want to collect them. That's all.

I don't collect figures. I prefer to collect guns.

It's a better use of my money to get something with a practical application.

I might start collecting knives and pens too, seeing as I already have a few - but nothing too expensive.

Edit: In case anyone was wondering, yes, I do use all my guns, knives, and pens - they're not for show.

If you really like a character, you can see him/her physically all the time.

Also, some figures make a really nice decoration for your house just like paintings.

And if that’s not enough of a reason, you also support the industry.

'Cause I have money to spend.

Anyway, I have other reasons why I buy figures:

Aesthetics. The figures I own or bought for others are beautifully crafted. Seriously, even if I didn't like anime I would still be able to admit some figures are stunning. They also make my room and shelves more interesting.

Characters. Obviously, I wouldn't buy figures of characters I dislike. But there are some characters I like from shows I'm not all that crazy about. Figures are definitely one of the best ways to show my love for a specific character.

Bunny ver. Those bunny version of figures from FREEing make for a good wank, honestly.

Friendo. Speaking of those bunny figures... When I bought my first one, I thought, "She looks lonely, I remember Bob Ross once said 'Everybody needs a little friend'". After I bought another one, that thought kept repeating, "Everybody needs a little friend". I already know I'm going to end up buying a display cabinet from Ikea lol.

What it all boils down to though is that collecting figures is fun and makes me happy. And I like doing things that are fun and make me happy

People collect anime figures because they just want to I guess.

I don't think the price is that much of an issue unless you have no way of ever getting that amount of money since the people who buy figures simply think it's worth it. If you give $400 to 10 different people and you tell them they can spend it on whatever they want, they'll choose different things because people are different. Some people will say that buying a Playstation is more worth it than buying a nice painting. People can be happier with a $1 eraser than with a $1000 painting (when it comes to personal use, not selling it of course).

Figures are pricey in general so you just have to think about whether you think you want them bad enough. I don't think you should think hard about whether they're worth it because they are just tiny statues, because if you apply that logic to everything nothing in the world will make sense anymore. In that case a $50 bill would only be paper if you think about it and worth nothing. But that's not the case: it's money! It's worth something because that's how our society works. Figures are worth something because they aren't just small pieces of material, they're things that people put time and effort into to make and because they are collectibles. And most important of all: they are worth something because you personally like them and want one!

I myself own 3 Link Nendoroids and the Jean Kirstein RAH because I like those characters. I thought the figures were nice. I saved up for it. I thought about it for a while. And no I don't play with them like a 5-year-old, I don't "use" them, they are just decoration after all. But just because I can only look at them it doesn't mean they were a stupid purchase because I like the way they look and I don't feel any regret when I look at them. I only die a little on the inside when I think about the fact that Jean's 3DMG is broken. :')

Just think about it carefully. Do you have the money or not? What other things do you want to spend money on? What other things do you need to spend money on? Do you still want that particular figure after thinking about it for a few weeks? (Unless it's a limited edition or pre-order that's about to close, it's better to take your time to decide!)

Once you've bought your first figure you'll know whether collecting figures is something you like. Purchasing another figure will be easier after that. However, make sure you don't get addicted to buying them! :P

I think that in the worst-case scenario you don't feel any fulfillment when you open that box, you think you'll never look at the figure again and you just put it back in that box and sell it online for about the same amount of money you paid for it (because the figure has been removed from the box once but is still in mint condition). You'll have lost a few bucks in the end, but in exchange for that you got to see the figure irl.

I don't think I've anything counting as anime figures (i've only old toys of pokemons, and two gundams, but i've never watched gundam, I just liked robots), but going to assume.

Toys.

Kids love toys, figures are toys of anime/manga characters. Some people like figures even if they are no longer kids.

Or. Scale model collectionism.

This one is more common among older people, some like models of trains, some of planes and helicopters, some of ships, some make models of old castles and use them as terrain for warhammer matches... and some like them to be about anime characters. The reasons may be similar.

People like to collect things. Usually things they like. So when people have all these anime waifus, they collect physical figures of them in different poses!

I for one can't justify getting into collecting figures though. I would love to have them, but its expensive and I don't have that much extra space to put them on display anyway.

I have a few figures. I just like owning something pristine of a character I like. Obviously it very expensive, but collecting stuff like figures, manga & anime is a hobby you culminate with time and extensive research on certain items.

It's like asking a collector why he collects, it's no particular reason. People just enjoy different things. Although I suggest not becoming a hoarder, that's never good.
