Kokoro's book is going to lead to sex between pairs for sure. This entire series has been a metaphor for sex, might as well do it for real.

Nice refreshing episode. Zorome-bro is bro.

Got the same feeling, tho for some reason I have a feeling an NTR is gonna occur and I dont mean Hiro and Ichigo, more like Kokoro and Mitsuru, for some reason they're giving out a vibe that they'll do something with each other ever since their scene when Kokoro talked to Mitsuru and now after Mitsuru saved her.

A beach episode. Great. You're lucky I like fan service or I'd be super pissed off right now.

But, seriously, it's an ok episode. The destroyed town was interesting for a bit but having a blatant beach episode just after your first arc. Seriously?

I was a bit sceptical going in for this week’s episode but I think it turned out good. A nice change of pace to what we’ve gone through so far. And it felt like there’s something big underway in the next couple episodes... looking forward to those!

Aaand it’s always nice to see progress between Hiro and Ichigo :)

Both Ichigo and Hiro's tragedy and death flags have been raised this episode. Furthermore, we have the setup for the broad outline of the plot, including who's going to go into what camp. It's fairly obvious that the nines will serve as the primary antagonists of the show, seeing as they are tasked with the upholding of the plantations' ruling cult.

Zorome, Miku, Ikuno, and Mitsuru will ultimately fall in with the cult for opposite reasons, while Hiro, Ichigo, and Zero-Two will ultimately end up opposing it. Everyone else will fall somewhere in the middle. The catalysts for this will undoubtedly be the search for information that Kokoro's book will inspire, along with the team learning of Naomi's real fate.

This beach episode totally came out of left field, but we did get a lot of new world-building info that ended up making this episode more integral than just any "filler fan-service" episode. We also got a lot of meaningful interactions between Ichigo, Hiro, and Zero Two, as well as a little bit more screen-time for all the other parasites.

Ichigo also cemented as best girl of the show for me. Zero Two gotta step her game up.

Overall, it was an ok episode with surprisingly good art. I still wish the story would give us some answers for a change rather than continually throwing more questions and exposition at us. The show really needs to draw itself in and focus on one thing at a time.

I love how everyone keeps saying "beach episode but...", unless I've never seen a shitty anime with a beach episode(might be the case, I try to avoid shitty anime), all the beach episodes have a "but..." shoved in to make it redeemable in some way and not just fan-service episode, I wonder if we'll get the other cliched episodes(bathhouse/hot spring, festival and test of courage are some that come into mind).

Notes as I'm watching the episode:

Overall, there are way too many flags being raised here to be counted. However, we now have the clear lines of the plot, now that the world has been fleshed out a little. This was a good episode, much more so than the one previously, because we got the details about the world that the previous episodes were missing; we can see the scale of the threat that the Klaxosaurs posed, and we begin to see the outlines of the narrative that the cult of Papa has used to justify itself, including the major hints that all is decidedly not as it seems. We also get Ichigo's "confession" at the end of the episode, effectively raising her death flag for all to see...

I wouldn't say it was superior or inferior compared to the previous episodes based on what it pursues. Episode 1-6 labeled as "Part 1" worked towards establishing the Jian motif and have our main duo a close enough bond that allows them to stick around each other. Since Zero Two is the factor from outside who will most likely open this bird cage and set them free. Now that this was established they could start diving into the background and mysteries starting this Episode, it's "Part 2" according to the executive producer. So I wouldn't say this episode was far better than the previous simply because it tackled some world building and mysteries that the previous ones lacked but that was due to them having a different focus alltogether.

2. 5:45-7:00: the degree to which the men are aware of their female partners sexually is actually a bit of a problem where the writing is concerned. For people who apparently don't even know what a kiss is, they're certainly aware sexually and (in the case of the girls) romantically. This becomes even more strained in credulity when the boys start interrogating Hiro at 10:30 through 11:17.

I don't see it as a problem in terms of writing at all. They've been raised in complete unawareness to any kind of physical or emotional intimacy which is expressed to how they do not even know what a kiss or what love is. This though does not stop their natural instincts to kick in. They can find the opposite gender attractive but not know what to do with it, it's what nature gave us all. We should also remember that they're growing up without any media influencing their sexual or emotional orientation. We can watch a film or a read a book and see multiple instances of physical contact and love being displayed, they did not have that. I think the creators actually pointed at that because Ichigo & Kokkoro both stumbled upon media that would have taught them this stuff. Heck, they're so isolated they can't even learn this stuff through interacting with other people. We might see people kiss in public or we might hear from others about this & that, they can't draw from these sources of information...well except Hiro but even that only to a minor degree since he doesn't really know much himself.[/quote]

I find your other comment about Naomi extremely interesting. Ichigo said that she was sent to a hospital but then again that's what the Adults told her...so this could mean literally anything. Given how Naomi appeared in this "limbo scene" of Hiro who was on the verge of dying I think implications point towards her being actually dead.

Personally I think that the book that Kokkoro picked up might be the first step towards the kids questioning their environment and the Adults.

I think waving this off as a mere beach episode does this some disservice though. It may appear so on first glance but there is clearly something fishy going on that even the character's themselves acknowledge.

We know this whole trip has been set up by the Doctor. What reason would he have to do something like that? Not even Nana understood why he would do something like that all of a sudden.

Ikuno mentions two interesting things this episode. This mansions was strangely accurate to the mansion they're living in, almost an exact copy apparently. When they returned from visiting the ruins everything was set up for them. To me it feels like there is something bigger going on besides them simply going to a beach.

But that's not even talking about how much new stuff this Episode actually tackled, stuff that will lead into very interesting developments. So again I think just calling this a blatant beach episode is being unfair towards the episode and the things it has and might achieve in the future.

I think that 002 is older than she seems to be.....

Maybe they knew each other when they were younger....

Of course it has to have a beach episode. I really like Zorome now, definitely gonna be someone whose shoulder is gonna be available for Hiro in hard times. And you gotta appreciate the fanservice on this one, especially in that ED. I hope 02 will get passed her "hierarchy" issue and at least be a great teamplayer. Though I would have liked to see them together and hold hands, but I doubt that's gonna happen as of now kek

Somehow, a beach episode finds its way into the anime. It was a slow-paced relief episode after the action-packed one episode six was. Ichigo is slowly becoming Rem more and more and Zero Two goes from kawaii to jealous yandere every three seconds.

Ironicaly, the "fanservice" episode was one of the most world building ones.

The dynamic between the boys on this ep was hilarious to watch and one of the best parts of it imo!

Of course, that book Kokoro found will have some, if not a major importance to the plot and I can't wait to see where it's going to lead.

Also, Goro seems to be developing romantic feelings about Ichigo too and I just hope she starts to see him in the same way at some point.

6/5 episode imo, because 5/5 is not enough.

5)Intrigue
6)Yaoi bait
7)Yuri bait

What are the chances of letting them go out in a pretense of letting them enjoy a break and but in reality to let them find out more about the human civilization of the past? I mean one of the buildings in that area was of which their dorm is modeled after. To stop in a place like this can only mean there is something going on behind the scenes.

The only part that bothered me is 016 getting flustered seeing 9'α up close was not really needed but possible tragedy flag is raised the moment they started talking about 016 and 002 to always be together.

I thought the best character of this episode was 015. She seems to still hope that 016 would look her way but she has the heart to accept 002 as well. I am so gonna check the 2ch boards to see the reactions of the fans in Japan. Poor souls don't even realize that they are being shown this delicious strawberry on top of the cake only to be taken away the moment they are about to take a bite, haha!

Another thing I noted that 056 is now really seeing 015 romantically. But perhaps like everyone else, he doesn't realize what it really means to see someone romantically. I wasn't expecting him to join with 666 and 214 to corner 016 like that.

The episode also touched again on 666's fixation with becoming an adult which I reckon will come to haunt him and everyone else when the truth is revealed. I think he is too into it so it will come to hurt him the most. He is on for a dangerous revelation. Although I loved his interactions with 214 for boys being boys. And of course the way he wrapped his arm around 016 before saying they are buddies.

I also liked the fact that 556 picked up a book related to babies with the title "First Time Giving Child Birth". If she keeps it and reads the content I don't think things will be the same again. Anyways, there does seem to be something between her and 326. As Hayami Saori mentioned in her interview we see 556 again got in a situation with her and 326 on their own. At this moment, it looks like 326 is still an outsider while the others have slowly warmed up to one another, forming a deeper bond.

I would prefer for the fans to be able to see this episode beyond just the fanservice. The major plus is this episode also managed to flesh out all the Children and every single one of them had some sort of development which will do the anime good in the long run. For the first time it seemed like that all of the Children are main characters as the official website claims them to be.

+1

I am still wondering about the love triangle, because which one of them knows about love? Zero Two's love is like possession, Hiro's love is like hope and Ichigo is unsure. Same emotion but foggy meanings for each of them.

While Mitsuru and Zorome mentioned how papas saved humanity from klaxosaurs by stuffing humans from nature into domes, Zero Two was swimming freely. I wonder why she wanted to swim again, does she have a telepathic power, how can she be sure such abandoned cities all over the world?

At least, the cities are abandoned but not destroyed.

So, the kids don't understand the concept of love and all of those sexual-related actions that signify love but understand the word "kawaii".
Okay okay I get it I get it the two things are different.

Other than that, it's a mostly excellent world-building and foreshadowing episode.
Though, once again it's not really original. (But the lovers won't care anyway, so...)

The last scene confirmed it for me. This show is going to turn really dark soon. Nice.

Also I should have noticed it sooner but the kids really dont know what love is, interesting.

For a second there I thought zero two and ichigo where making a citrus scene and kiss to show dominance. I have the feeling Zero Two also only remotely knows what love is and what the outside world was, I hope we will get some explanation soon, I feel Zero Two will have some dark secret in the future. The more I think about it (thx to the recent reddit AMA) the more I feel Zero Two will be some sort of villain soon, I would love that.

PS: The other Double Zero blond guy reminds me of owari no seraph. The kids are vampires confirmed

Ok, here's my take on things so far... (Skip below if you want a TL;DR)

Zero Two and Hiro don't work together (as a couple) and here's why I think that.

Zero Two doesn't see Hiro as a person, just her darling and there's a good reason for that. From the onset of the anime we've been presented with the premise that Zero Two and Hiro need each other as they complete each other, they are two halves of the same whole if you will. Zero Two is compatible with one other and it's Hiro. This is something Zero Two has been seeking for a long time, all those partners dead, the way people perceive her, it's all very sad and it's clearly had an impact on her mental state. Her desire to find the partner that won't die and allow her to be free is found in Hiro and to that end she has her eternal love, her "Darling".

Hiro is the other side of this parallel, Hiro perceives himself (as so do the majority) a failure. He has been raised to be a Franxx pilot something that is drilled into them form an early age, this however is seemingly the one thing he cannot do despite trying. Repeated failures and consequences of those have left him weak and down heartened. Here he meets Zero Two, a beautiful girl who is unlike any person he has seen before. Over the episodes that follow Hiro discovers his compatibility, manages to pilot and through Zero Two he is given the one thing he has striven for; piloting a Franxx to please Papa and help his friends and all through Zero Two, his missing piece if you will.

Here's the thing, turns out accomplishing that one thing you've been told to do is just that, an accomplished goal. Beyond piloting Hiro has become to feel for Zero Two and wishes to truly be by her side. He has seen different aspects of her personality, including times of weakness and wants to devote himself to this person. He has grown and gotten over the aspect of "I need to succeed piloting Franxx because I've been told that's what I'm supposed to do" and has progressed into developing his own reasons for doing that. Not because he is told but because he wants to be with Zero Two.

Zero Two has come to no such revelation, in-fact she doesn't (in my opinion) look at Hiro as a person but more of the goal of which she has been seeking, now obtained and nothing will take that goal away from her. Hiro "belongs" to Zero Two. Across these episodes there isn't dialogue in which Zero Two and Hiro communicate as people, they only speak of their wishes, goals, desires and alike, their entire romance dynamic is very fake feeling because of this.

Dr. Mech-Face Ossan (apologies I forget his name) even states in this episode not to give his emotions to Zero two because they will be eaten and my interpretation of that (and there might and probably will be many different meanings to that statement, both actual and metaphorical) is that falling in love or wishing to be loved by Zero Two isn't an outcome that can happen. Not the way Zero Two is as of right now anyway.

It's common for childhood friends to get cucked in anime and it's probably the same here but at this point Ichigo is winning the brownie points in the Hirobowl.

Closing thoughts: This could all change and I truly hope it does with as little heartbreak as possible. This is the first episode in which we see what I believe to be desire for Zero Two to fit in with the group (her staring at them from afar and having fun together). Perhaps she'll gain some humanity and realize her situation with Hiro and her treating of others up to this point has been nothing but somewhat cruel, especially if she feels no true sense of love for Hiro.

TL;DR
Zero Two is just using Hiro and the Dr's warning may actually be literal as she doesn't see him as a love interest but just means of achieving her goals.

Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass, idk. Thoughts anyone?

Nice to see Ichigo accepting everything and being able to have some good times, she deserves it. Zero two getting along with everyone was nice too.

Thoughts anyone?
what makes we wonder was the way she talked about the kiss and how its for someone special while at the same time denying hiro the kiss. It feels like she is a child playing with a toy, just that the toy is hiro

Also I just cant get over the AMA with hiromi wakabayashi, one question was if they knew zero two was going to be liked so much and he basically answered we should better ask this after the show is done airing.

Seems like she will do something unlikeable? Rustled my Jimmys

It's an interesting point of view, personally I think that, as you said, 02 will learn "human" feelings. I don't really care of who will date Hiro in the end but if 02 learn feelings she might be able to fall in love with Hiro or maybe someone else. I think this anime is mostly about human relations and he always suprised me so You're point of view may be one of the logicalest but I think there too logic in it
