H&M apologizes for showing black child wearing a 'monkey in the jungle' sweatshirt

H&M has apologized for an online advertisement that featured a young black boy modeling a sweatshirt reading “Coolest monkey in the jungle.”

The image, which was recently advertised on the Swedish clothing retail company’s website in Britain, ignited an uproar on social media, with critics saying it was tone deaf and filled with racist undertones.

“We understand that many people are upset about the image. We, who work at H&M, can only agree,” H&M said Monday in a statement to The Washington Post. “We are deeply sorry that the picture was taken, and we also regret the actual print. Therefore, we have not only removed the image from our channels, but also the garment from our product offering globally.

“It is obvious that our routines have not been followed properly. This is without any doubt. We will thoroughly investigate why this happened to prevent this type of mistake from happening again.”
People took to Twitter on Monday, noting that other sweatshirts from the same line, including one reading, “Survival expert,” were modeled by white children.

“So the black kid gets to wear the H&M sweater with “Coolest monkey in the jungle” and the white kid with “Survival expert”. This is beyond disgusting. It’s a projection of your neocolonial thinking. You won’t see me anywhere near your shops these days,” one poster offered.

Josiah Johnson, one of the creators of Comedy Central’s “Legends of Chamberlain Heights,” called out H&M on Twitter, which was abuzz with criticism from celebrities, journalists and social justice advocates.
“Woke up this morning shocked and embarrassed by this photo,” music artist Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, wrote. “I’m deeply offended and will not be working with @ hm anymore . . .”

New York Times columnist Charles Blow asked H&M, “have you lost your damned minds?!?!?!”

Retail strategist Wendy Liebmann said it is imperative that companies, especially in the retail industry, are conscious about how their products are perceived by consumers. “Sometimes this happens — a global company is not sensitive to another culture, another political commentary,” said Liebmann, chief executive of WSL Strategic Retail. “This is something that is relevant across the world. So not to be sensitive to that is an everyday issue; it’s not just the times we live in. This is a consciousness that we should all have at any time — not just at these heightened times.”

Liebmann said incidents such as these used to blow over more quickly, but not in today’s digital age.

“We’re much more sensitive and much more overt in expressing ourselves,” she said, adding that H&M needs to address the issue and be sensitive with its other collections.

Still, some argued on Twitter that despite how it appeared, H&M may not have had that intention: “Am I the only one who doesn’t feel h&m meant it like that with the black little baby in the monkey shirt? Kids wear little cute stuff like that all the time.”

Other brands have had similar issues, including Abercrombie & Fitch, Urban Outfitters and Zara.

The international personal care brand Dove faced backlash late last year after running a video advertisement for body wash that appeared to show a black woman removing her shirt to reveal a white woman. As The Washington Post’s Cleve Wootsen reported, Dove responded at the time with an apology saying it had “missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully.”

It should be noted that the mom has said she doesn't care and that people are getting their panties in a twist over nothing http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5257715/Mother-H-M-race-row-child-model-speaks-out.html but people are accusing her of either being paid or ignorant because she's from Kenya and therefore doesn't understand the struggles of black people in the West or some shit.

I'm guessing that either A) H&M truly didn't think it was racist because they don't care about race or B) they were fully aware of the fact that "monkey" has been used as a racial epithet towards black people throughout history and they went through with it because "all publicity is good publicity"

Kids are compared to monkeys because they climb on things and hang on them. That was the intent.

Setting aside how humans are monkeys in a scientific way. Black people are still portrayed as non humans by racists. You might have seen it as an alt-right talking about black people "chimping out". So it's not just was but still is although by a minority.

D'oh, I meant "has been used as a racial epithet towards black people throughout history". I don't know why I forgot the history part, I know some racists still use it that way

Since she let him wear the shirt in the first place it seems pretty obvious she doesn't care about or at least don't understand the racist aspect.

But H&M is a scumbaggy company in general. I assume they just wanted publicity.

I can see this being a mistake and sadly everyone is staring daggers at H&M like they analyze each picture to see if it'll offend someone. Granted I'm shocked the mother didn't say something or notice??? But learn from mistakes big companies....

Of course there isn't a slight chance–in these people's eyes–that H&M merely made a slipup in their advertising; this can only have been a deliberate act of racism, and the entire company is pushing a racist propaganda that is worth harrassing the employees and vandalising the stores over (very civilised!). People are trying really hard to be victims these days, and they look for anything that can be remotely interpreted as hostility to be offended by.

Kids are monkeys. They never chill and they always climb around like fucking lunatics. I wonder what that little child would've thought if he learned that some people think that he's a victim of racism; children don't give a shit about stuff like this, but adults always have to overcomplicate everything. This whole incident is retarded. H&M could've been more careful with their advertising, though, because it's pretty obvious that some people would draw a connection between a black child and a monkey shirt. What annoys me the most is that I read articles about H&M employees being harassed and treated poorly because of this, as if they had anything to do with it.

lol this is pretty funny.
I think publicity stunt is a decent possibility. Yea describing kids as monkeys is something I've seen done in general, but they should know how people are nowadays. Things get labeled racist pretty easily so it's surprising they wouldn't catch that.

I can see you

Employees of these stores aren’t the guys at corporate who make these boneheaded decisions. People should take their complaints to corporate.

The employees who make less than $15/hr should not be the recipients of their rage, it’s corporate’s fault. As someone who works retail, big box stores are the most difficult to clean up as is, trashing them more isn’t going to solve anything, it’s a needless displacement of anger that should be summarized in a strongly worded letter and not in destroying the store.

It's not really about offending people that matters, it's that it revs up actual racists strengthening their pre-existing racist views. "See even the kikes know they're monkeys!". There are probably people on /pol/ and DailyStormer and StormFront circulating the picture around calling him a monkey and trying to ad it to memes. How do you think that kid would feel when he's older and there are memes of him being a monkey circulated around?

So black kids shouldnt be allowed to wear clothing with monkey related stuff on them because they might become a meme.

Literally almost any random thing can become a meme. I wouldnt have even made the connection between monkey and race. If certain people do then thats on them.

Because 'monkey' has been used as a racial slur against black people for centuries. So yes, it would be different if it was another animal. You have to be very ignorant not to see that.

Doesn't that only show how overly sensitive people are though? If I saw black kid wearing sweatshirt like that I wouldn't even think of connecting that to racist slur; sure, some guys probably would make fun of that, and that's not okay, but I think that overcoming that with head up would be better, rather than making this whole fuss.

I just feel bad for the kid and his mother, if they thought this was okay, then it's their business, let them do whatever they want. I never understood the idea of getting offended in someone else's place :v

I can understand people being upset over the ad. Black people are often called monkeys by racist people around the world. So this isn't only something that is offensive in America and and Americans are just pushing their values onto the rest of the world. At the same time I know little kids like to play around and climb on stuff like monkeys. I know when I was a little kid I was climbing over everything.Trees, the roof of my grandparents house. But the company should have know that this would gotten a negative reaction.
