Why are tsunderes so popular within the anime community. I really don't understand why so many people like tsunderes. Its easily the most overused archetype.
Anime would be way better off if it didn't have so many damn tsunderes.

BTW Im not saying all tsunderes are bad, just 98% of them.

There is a certain cuteness that comes from girls not wanting to show their true selves. The idea that they pretty much always act hostile but are actually loving on the inside and will act it once they get to know you is attractive, at least to some people.

If it wasn't the most overused another characteristic would be and people would then complain about why the other one is so overused. It's cute watching them being stubborn.

Maybe because the tsundere is the easiest archtype to develop and people like well developed characters most of the time. But that's just my guess
Also have you even seen every Tsundere in anime? Because if not I'm calling bullshit on that 98% statement

It's probably just you. (lol, jk).

And to answer the OP: I find some attraction to tsundere characters because in a way they're easy to relate to, I can't really hit the nail in the head on why that is.
But a typical example to take would be Taiga Aisaka, since she's one of the most popular tsunderes, why? Because you'll feel sympathy for her, that's it basicly, there's more too it than that, but I'd rather not walk in to spoiler territory here, but because you can relate to her, and feel sorry for her, you'll get to like her because of that.

I couldn't get into Toradora, but I understand what you are saying.

I like Tsunderes that don't quite fit the archetype but are close enough to be considered one. I also like Tsunderes that are so over the top that the character has great comedic value.

Other then that I don't care for them at all.

I'd say she's borderline tsundere, she's not like Senjougahara or Asuka, but she's a type of tsundere that's breaking (or rather expanding) the trope by being unique in her way.

Are you only saying she is borderline because she is a violent person? Because being violent isn't enough to be borderline in my opinion honestly

Why are Tsundere so popular?
I think popularity first emerged with good writers coming up with a characters that was unique in the sense that they has many layers and were complex to a certain degree where you could relate or understand where they coming coming from.

Now you see them everywhere and it is because of they way many animation companies in the animation industry approach making anime, which is try to figure out what another popular anime did and milk the hell out of it without making it unique what so ever or at least adding a artistc spin on it. Though, you can't blame animation companies that much, due to the fact they adopt it from the source material, which tends to be light novels. Though light novel adaption were not thing until The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and then animation companies started milking that idea too, so you can blame the animation companies.

My Opinion
I didn't like Tsunderes solely because they very unrelatable to me. This is probably because my idea of a good anime character is someone who you can see in the real world but with maybe a artistic spin or exaggeration.

Original Tsunderes would have fit that criteria but considering most of the new anime, they don't explain how the characters became a tsundere they just expect you to understand and recognise that, 'oh, this character is a tsundere'. Which is a so meta to point where to me its just annoying. In the case of other people who do like it. I think they like it probably due to the fact that its cool to have a fetish for tsunderes.

Alright, let's agree to disagree then. There isn't really a clear line on what a charather need to be or to have, to be concidered a tsundere or not, the definition isn't exactly set in stone, and it's a rather wide spectrum, your defintion of a tsundere doesn't match my definition of a tsundere, and that's fine.
But let's not pollute this thread by discussing who's right or not, if you wish to tell my why I'm wrong, then do so by sending me a message on my profile instead, and if you don't wish to continue talking, then I'll wish you a good night.

Personally, I am not big on tsundere in general. I can only think of one exception on my head so far, and even then she is a bit of an oddity as far as tsundere goes. And I suppose that I still prefer them over yanderes..

The problem now is that tsunderes are 99% the same with only about 1% being good, however I guess most dere archetyepes are shit to begin with so....

Tsunderes can be likeable but have some fun cuteness to them. The problem is that a lot of writers love to make them over the top and generic which is where the problem comes rolling along. ^^; It becomes a bitter battle for some originality nowadays on how to
handle that type of personality.

The fact that they aren't nice to everyone and having thick skin makes it all the more worth it when you(the mc) become close enough to them that they show you their real self. It's very much like real life... it's like when you make that one person who never laughs laugh .. it means SO much more that it is them because you really feel like you accomplished something.

Implying that the tsundere archetype isn't one of the most boring character archetypes to have ever been invented.
