As much as I don’t find amnesia interesting, in the same vein as I dislike brainwashing or mind control as I feel it removes character nuance and character depth in terms of ambiguity and motivation, Sabo was definitely done well. This episode was all about it, showing us Sabo’s journey up until now, and we got a long and lingering scene when it came to the hurt Sabo felt. Only returning at the end of the war, he overheard about Ace’s death and when he looked at the newspaper it broke him down and returned all of his memories back to normal. We sat with him as he shook and gasped and weeped and remembered it all. When he realized he let his brother die and was not there for him. This is a horrible experience to have, one that could create so much guilt, even if amnesia makes it undeserved guilt. It makes sense why he thought Luffy would hit him the next time they met.
Sabo visited Ace’s grave, got a favour to ensure he preserved Ace’s power, and when he saw Luffy we were able to see part of the scene which was cut off. Luffy was so happy to see Sabo, crying and nodding his head with the ‘uh-huh’ he did when he was crying over Sabo alongside Ace as they spoke of living with no regrets. It was one of those moments that Luffy’s vulnerable side was as obvious as ever. And with his heartbreaking line: “I let Ace get killed in front of me”, I think he was expecting to get a good punch too. But rather, the two were just utterly glad the other one was okay. Other lines like talking about stealing sake from Dadan, or “You think I can’t tell my brother’s face because he’s in disguise?” were full of love.
Meanwhile when Sabo left and told everyone to take care of Luffy, Zoro laughing about how he’s so similar to Ace was nice. It made me think that, like Luffy’s brother is proud of him for having the friends he has, I think his friends are proud of Luffy’s brother too. With another vivre card, let’s hope this one doesn’t burn up. With that, Fujitora rolled a die to decide whether or not he would hunt Luffy down tonight. However, with how his introductory scene was Fujitora being so good at gambling that, despite being blind, he had to be cheated to contest, I’d wager we can assume this sneaky old man did that on purpose. His line about not grumbling after the die is rolled reminded me of a certain Akagi Shigeru.
I’ve criticized Ace’s death before, I forget if I have in these posts, but despite it having such a strong presence in the moment, and the horrific and beautiful state of Luffy after the fact, I felt the only downside to his death was the permeance or lackthereof. To me, a series needs to account for the way a death will change the series if it goes long enough to follow the ramifications. And that’s where I’d hoped to see more. Luffy uses Ace’s power in Red Hawk and such, but I felt for the long term, Ace’s death mostly signified a power up in Luffy. Like he realized he needed to be stronger, he got stronger, and now he is nearly the same as he’s always been along with the lines about no one dying hitting kind of hard. I’d have liked to see more of a change in Luffy, be it his undying idealism crumbling a little or perhaps some more seriousness in how he goes about his actions. However, through Sabo we got what I wanted. Sabo’s life changed drastically in a way Luffy’s didn’t, Sabo didn’t already go through the loss of a brother; Ace was the first. The power and care to preserve it was another great carry over of the late and great Ace, seeing how much they still care about him. How he’s still carried with the both of them. So, this is ultimately me saying I like how Ace is still affecting the story. |
