I was reading an article recently in which a 16-year-old boy was charged with showing a Playboy magazine to his classmates.

I don't know when the last time you picked up a Playboy magazine is, but they are mild, not even porn. The magazine no longer features nudity, and at the time in which this boy was showing the magazines they only featured maybe a half-dozen pictures of topless women an issue.

Compare this to something like High School DxD or To Love-Ru, where you can see frequent nudity and pseudo/softcore sex acts. If you go on a website like The Top Tens you can see kids as young as 10 proclaiming their loves for these types of shows.

If these kids' parents were to forever reason get arrested and have their Internet history checked, do you believe they would get in trouble for letting their children view obscene material? Do you believe it's right?

If I was beating my salami to women getting banged in porn videos at 12 years old, then I think it's fine to look at some animated tits. As if we are not sexually curious at that age.
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives.

I don't think much 'kids' would start off by looking at ecchi, maybe some. With how easy it is to access the internet, they'll just go straight to porn if their curiosity hits peak, no reason to detour unless they saw some hot cartoon girl that got them hard.

As for the actual title question, obviously it is inappropriate but kids these days already see so much stuff they shouldn't with the internet.

I don't really mind.
I can't see the problem, why a 16 year old can't be curious about it? It's natural.

Fun fact: I never touched a Playboy magazine.
Well, they aren't popular in my country, I guess. Please, internet is superior.

Depends on how ecchi it is. I've let my 7 year old watch in on a few series I've watched with an ecchi tag.....And then there's some I would never dream of letting her see lol.

So, yes and no?

Yes he was charged for showing playboy to classmates, but saying just that is rather misleading as the story is more complex. Initially he was charged for having child porn, but they "took a deal from the prosecution" to charge him for the much smaller offense of distributing obscene material to minors.

Relevant quote: "In exchange for dropping all counts of child pornography, Matthew pleaded guilty to the strange charge of distributing obscene materials to minors -- a "Playboy" magazine to his classmates.". Basically, we don't even knew if he really did it...

And in the end, "the judge couldn't believe the prosecution was insisting on sex offender status and invited Matthew to appeal", and Matthew came out clean. All in all, it's a pretty interesting story, but in the end, the jury was smart enough to realize the absurdity of the situation, and Matthew is now in good legal standing.

But i'm sure you knew all this..

I think ecchi is fine for kids 13 and up but it also depends on the series because i know a lot of kids start getting real curious around the 13 mark

As if teens and minors in real life aren't already exposed to obscene material similar to ecchi.
You walk into high school and there's probably at least a few girls with cleavage showing, or you walk into a shop and half the magazines on the rack have a man or a woman with tons of skin showing. I'm sure most of us has probably stumbled upon a porn ad before while surfing the web.
Some anime titties isn't going to permanently leave them brain dead, especially since most of the time, they don't go beyond cleavage or go beyond a character just having big boobs.
Now, I'm not the type to say that a child as young as 10 should be exposed to this kind of material. Nobody younger than a teenager should watch ecchi anime anyways.
But still, if somebody arrests a parent because their young, hormonal, adolescent daughter or son happens to watch some ecchi anime (or even porn) behind their back, then they might as well arrest owners of stores who sell playboy/playgirl or something like that.

tldr; no

That doesn't change the end conclusion: that it was considered that a few pictures of topless women could be considered obscene material and chargable.

Depends on the intensity. Some ecchi anime are not so bad and I'd allow them but others I'd hold off on until they're bigger.

It's not inappropriate, 10-11 years old boy could be a problem, but 16 years old guys? Plz xD I wouldn't even bother to keep controlling my future son and his Internet history if he was that age already.

I watched gore horrors when I was like 8 years old without my parents' knowledge. When I was 12 I watched my first tentacle hentai and it also didn't kill me (⌐ ͡■ ͜ʖ ͡■)

I did some research and turns out there is one country where it's confirmed viewing some ecchi series as a minor is a crime.

In New Zealand, the ratings are actually legally enforceable ("The restrictions on films and games apply in the home as well as school, sports clubs, shops and cinemas. A parent cannot give a child permission to watch or be shown a restricted film, or to buy or play a game, or watch a game being played, if the child is younger than the age on the label.") ("Penalties for supplying a restricted film or game to an underage person can be up to $10,000 or 3 months in prison for an individual, or $25,000 for a company.").

For example, you have to be 13 to view Mayo Chiki, 16 to view Strike Witches, and 18 to view We Without Wings.

A few have been deemed suitable for all ages to purchase though (simply suggested for mature audiences), such as Sekirei and Cat Planet Cuties.

One ecchi manga has been classified with an R13 due to complaints (they don't usually rate books).

I do think it is inappropriate for adult to show it to children intentionally. But if the kid stumble upon it on his own or from his friend, then I think that would be fine. The important thing is the kind of message you want to send to the kid.

MAL's ratings are based on American standards, hence the reason why shounen anime (for ages 8-18) can be rated 17+ when some seinen anime are rated G. Whatever age rating is attached to it determines what age you should be to watch it. Zombie Desu Ka? is rated 17+ so that's the age you should be to watch it. Technically this is how old you have to be to watch it alone, but I doubt you would want to watch it with your parents. No Game No Life is also ecchi but it's only rated PG13.

Young people will be young people. As long as they're at least twelve I mean, I don't think there's anything wrong with them viewing it experimentally, if it makes them uncomfortable they can drop the show.

I was let off on one of the loosest internet leashes as an early teenager, I never found myself doing something necessarily that objectionable, aside from idiotically infecting my computer with viruses downloaded from exe files i stupidly downloaded from dubious internet sources, among a few other things, but yeah, I don't see there being anything potentially wrong with some kid ending up viewing an ecchi anime, because let's face it, the whole lot of kids, at least, western kids, have viewed some kind of porn by age 15.

That's actually not a bad idea. But back to the thread: 1) Surprised the kid even had a Playboy magazine since there's the internet. 2) I might be reading this wrong but I don't think the parents and/or children would go to jail. Fined? Maybe. Best lesson to take away from this is don't get caught.

If you're talking little kids 9 times out of 10 they wouldn't even notice it. It's only when people start to become sexually aware that they actually notice the sexual connotations of innuendo.

Once they are sexually aware chances are they're going to seek the stuff out themselves...

Basic ethics: people have the right to seek happiness.
Whoever denies children right to see porn is evil.
It is not right to force or encourage children watch any kind of porn, ecchi or whatever, but it's perfectly alright for them to watch it of their own volition. Their body will tell them when they're the right age.
Giving children porn is only a crime if you look like a pedophile (it's called "child grooming").

I think this law is reason enough for some first world country to invade them and give them freedom at gunpoint. Do they have oil in New Zealand?

I hosted Anime Night for teens at a library before, and ecchi was out of the question. I never ordered ecchi manga either. Parents would frown upon showings and items like that. It's not minor fanservice; it's close to nudity. Of course, it's inappropriate.

No wonder I keep seeing sexually frustrated 16y old wankers everywhere with no clue as to what relationships and/or sex is. C'mon, this is fucking 21st century. I thought we're way beyond the idea of tits and pussies and dicks being some kind of a taboo. Sure, give 16y old kid ability to drive a freaking car, but dare he look up some titties, charge him for moral offence immediately!

What a fucked up world we're living in ...
