| Oh, F/Z was a survival show? I didn't even realize it, but I guess you could construe an argument (not that I would though). And for SAO only the first half counts as survival anime. Anyway, F/Z would win in this scenario, but not counting that there are basically no good ones. A couple of somewhat decent series like Btooom, but mostly crap like Mirai Nikki, Deadman Wonderland, SAO or the gantz adaption. For good ones you'll have to tackle manga, even the adapted ones are usually adapted very poorly so it's really your only option. Gantz or Liar Game manga are great examples. |

| If Fate/Zero counts, then IMO it's the best of this genre. Great dialogue, fights (esp. in the Blu-Ray version), production values, etc... If F/Z doesn't count then Gantz steals the win for me. I haven't finished it yet, but forgetting the shit start it's pretty damn good, you can just feel the tension in those fights. |

| I liked Btooom. It was better than Mirai Nikki. I wouldn't call Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 a survival game, but it's about people trying to survive. And they have no choice. It's just not a game. And it's MUCH better than Mirai Nikki and Btooom. |

| Mirrai Nikki hands down though that says more about the other anime in the genre than it says about MN. It has a nice variety of genres and the execution is crisp and makes it easy to marathon. But mostly the relation between Yuno and Yuki elevates this anime above all other anime I've seen so far. Btooom! for example is fine but lacks that edge because the couple in that is just the average damsel in distress/OP prince setup. Then I'm torn between Danganronpa and Gantz. Danganronpa has the best presentation in this list and is carried mostly by it's unique style. Visually very impressive with memorable and twistedly funny murder scene's and an inspired color palette. Unfortunately the rest of the comedy in this isn't so much "twisted" as it is obnoxious. It results in a weird mix that constantly switches it's mood without much subtlety. And then there is Gantz. Undoubtedly the worst anime in this list and one of the worst anime I've ever seen. But it has something about it that made me marathon it harder than Death Note. But the survival-game aspect is not it's strongest part. The anime wins points on its hilariously bleak look on society and a cast of characters so infuriating that they end up being memorable. And then Deadman Wonderland to close it out. Great setting, horrible execution. This series genuinely started out great. A ruthless antagonist, intriguing loli-satanic-cute-something girl and a whiny shitty MC ready to become kickass. The series peaked at a death-obstacle race you had to enter for food while "regular" people were cheering in the background. What a twisted exhilarating vision. And what did they do after? Stupid arena battles, thinking they can do a proper story, characters that went nowhere and no ending. |

To end this nonsense although it has ended it seems but for others that later read this forum i would just like to mention that a survival game can have rewards the main goal is how ever to survive for a first rule, 2 you are chosen not by choice and forced to participate, 3 only 1 person can win the game so m nikka does not count but does come closer than f/z in terms that in m nikki essentially started as a survival game since the original rules where 1. the last person alive wins(which means if you opt out you die since you are alive and can't be alive since the last man standing wins) now that we cleared that all participants must be dead to win we move on, the survival game went for a loop due to meddleing but due to how it began it is a survival anime in any case where as in f/z it is the equivalent to a world martial arts tournament in dbz the only time the laws of a survival anime can change is in the case of a zombie apoc where you must just survive as long as you can if there is an end to the appoc yay if not just keep surviving. |
