Ignorance, xenophobia, and poor sampling of the medium, the last of which creates the misconception that it's all childish cartoons and all pornography. Not one or the other, but somehow paradoxically both at the same time.

my friends think anime is like porn so i think to most people who haven't watched anime that's like the generalization of it. a friend called me anime. i got the name "anime" at a sports practice and it caught on they think its funny so i go with it and i think its funny. but the majority of my friends don't watch so i think it funny what they think anime is.

Yeah, surprisingly lots of people at my school converted and many people are watching anime. Even all the popular kids (in upper years too) started playing LoL and pay respect to people who are high ranking (my group of friends). It's a nice change :)

I'm Asian myself and where I am anime isn't looked down on as much as most other places in America, generally people here are open-minded to the things deviant of the norms.

Then again I haven't left the West Coast so I really have not outwardly seen people say that bad things about anime.

I don't want to judge everyone, but this is sadly the truth in many cases. I am not one to judge; I mean look I am a member of MAL myself. The thing is many Anime/Manga fans that I have met IRL are extremely socially awkward, don't look after themselves, and just give off a bad image.

I am comfortable admitting I am an Anime fan, but that is because I have so much more obvious things about me that people can see. I am also a huge sports fan and someone who loves going to the gym. Anime is one aspect of my life.

In many cases, I blame others for judging people who have a certain hobby. In this case, I can't blame the people who look down on Anime watchers too much because the Anime watchers themselves should take a huge share of the blame.

but black lagoon is mature o_o
I wasn't necessarily talking about you but posting a video about just how many times they say fuck in the show isn't really showing how it's mature. It's clear that your aim was to show them that an anime show says curse words a lot(which isn't mature).

But it's not for kids. To a point, hazerddex is right. Gore, nudity and cursing are inaproppiate content that can make some anime unfitting for kids. I'd say that maturity doesn't have these restrictions. A show can be mature while being essentially aimed at kids.

A good example of a very much child-aimed show that's very mature would be Ojamajo Doremi. Some episodes are childish, but there are a shit ton of arcs that deal with extremely mature topics and don't beat around the bush - ranging from things like child abuse and racism to things like societal expectations, legitimate kidnapping, death, and abandonment. And not all silly filled with jokes, but much of it treated seriously. Yet, at the same time, it's clearly a children's show and for the most part is fun and light hearted - which makes it all the more jarring when that stuff comes up.

Well for one, in many places there is the social stigma that watching animation is not something you usually do pass your child/teenage years. There is also the tendency for people to associate all echii/hentai hijinx, hyper-violent action, etc to all anime. Plus, some anime fans seem to have the need to hark anime as the second coming everywhere, which may end up pissing people off. Not to mention, the vocal creepy minority of anime fans.

I do not hide the fact I watch anime. Now if there is some weeaboo retards at your school making everyone who watches anime look like a weeaboo or wapanese retard I could see being embarrassed about the fact you watch anime. But considering the fact a lot of people watch Family Guy, Simpsons, Adult swim cartoons, Southpark and many other cartoon shows then all this stigma about watching anime is probably in your head.

If you do not know what a weeaboo/wapanese person is then read this article. Its a little harsh. And if you find yourself acting like the people mentioned in this article you might be extremely pissed.

Because most non anime watchers think it's porn and gay shit and think it's mostly for kids. Seriously. One of my friends played the Weiß Schwarz TCG on his PSP in school and one of his classmates came to him and asked him what the fuck he plays, if that's Hello Kitty or what and that he surely watches those "manga porns". What a retard.

I'm pretty sure watching Spongebob is as bad as watching anime...
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Why do NON-anime fans look down on anime?

Because they don't like it or understand it and therefore as humans, we usually look down on that which we dislike or misunderstand.

Why do anime fans look down on anime?

Various reasons....although I think the majority of them look down on the fans rather than the actual anime.....and those that do look down on anime in general....well, I have no idea.

"Jeffrey Goines: You know what crazy is? Crazy is majority rules." - 12 Monkeys

You know what weird is? Weird is majority rules, Jauregui.

People dismissed anime - and just about ANYTHING that doesn't agree with their beliefs - simply because of that, because it doesn't agree with their beliefs. For the sake of clarity:

People believe that normality is conformity. A normal person acts like the majority. That's a retarded thought. Seriously. I don't deserve to be persecuted just because my actions differ from yours. But if we want to play the blame game, you DO deserve to be blamed, Jauregui, because you, along with the narrow-minded thoughts of many, thinks that normality is majority rules.

Objectivity nowadays seems to be pinning the blame on a specific target. Heh. Berserk was right about humanity needing an idol of worship.

I went through this a lot and still go through it on an everyday basis, This is how the world works. Anything mainstream is accepted anything that isn't is mostly not. Remember when only a few handful of people played even video games? Well I do. It was looked down upon because it wasn't mainstream. Now everywhere you go people love video games, It's just the way the world works. If you have never heard of say Halo or call of duty, that is considered weird. Anime is the same. It's getting bigger and bigger each day, More and more people find Anime more socially accepted these days, But still not completely.

A lot of stereotypes, Like. It's just 2-D porn or it's just women get raped. The sad news is, that there is some Anime like that. But there is also some mainstream movies like that. 90% of anime has sexual references, But so does almost 100% of mainstream movies. People just follow the crowd, that's what's wrong with society, Anime is amazing. But they cant look past the stereotype. Some Anime are so good they send shivers down my spine. I'm sure a lot of people have had this occur also.

Erm, no. YOU need to grow up. You are the one acting like a child, my friend. That's a statement of fact, by the way, not a statement of blaming. By blaming anyone, you've already lost half the battle.

They call everyone a sheep because they were offended by said sheep. Yes, that doesn't make them any more righteous than the sheep, but what YOU are implicating here is that they are just immature people. Furthermore, the context of your statement is full of hostility towards such a demographic, and it's not backing up your case greatly. It just makes you look like a biased bigot, regardless of who you are inside.

It's not who you are, but what you do that defines you.
