Personally my interest would die out pretty quickly. I'd keep buying volumes of series I really want to finish and buy some of my favourites but my consumption would go down more than tenfold.

Over to you.

Anime and manga are two forms of entertainment I enjoy sparsely, to spend the time. I don't see myself paying for either, though that might change once I get a job(Lol basement dweller).

Right now, I'd probably just move on to something else.

In general, I find it hard to pay for things I haven't ever seen even a little of, especially since I'm still in college without a job. So I would just finish reading the stuff I bought and buy a few other series that I enjoy, but I'd be pissed cause a lot of manga I read aren't available in English officially.

If there was easier access to it, yes. There's no way I'd be able to watch as much though, it's expensive.

I would almost certainly give it up. Maybe I'd by one or two of the top rated shows/movies per year, but that's probably it.

Not at the current prices - I simply do not have enough money to do it. I am pretty sure I have watched more anime than I have earned enough money to buy in my life.

Considering I don't buy much overall to begin with, I might just drop the habit of buying what I'd like and just use the internet.

Wouldn't mind a mango right about now either.

"If anime and manga were no longer free"

Well one I don't read manga, when it comes to reading I stick to novels.

Also I think you underestimate the power of the internet, trust me when I say they would and will always be free and there is no way to stop it.

At current prices of blurays/dvds, hell no.

As said above by one poster, I'd just pay CR or any other streaming site if fansubs somehow died out or killed off.

TBH, if fansubs were somehow eliminated, tons of pay-to-stream sites like CR would pop up so not much would change aside from being unable to archive my fav anime.

Assuming you still have an Internet connection (and depending on your location), there would still be plenty of free, ad-supported, legitimate streams at CrunchyRoll, TheAnimeNetwork, Funimation, Viz, Hulu, Viki, etc. It's not like the only options are "illegally download, buy discs/subscriptions, or get out of the fandom."

Being a teenager that can not yet get a job, no.

Anime is very expensive and so is manga.
10-12.00 just for one volume when I can buy a whole novel for that price. -____-

but anime goes 35-50.00 just for a whole series on DvD. I don't even want to know about blu-ray prices.

I'd pay for Crunchy Roll if I'd have to, but I can not buy tons of box sets. Even single DvDs that only have 2-3 episodes on them or pricey.

BDs/DVDs is a no no.
It's meant for collection purpose.

You bought 5000 mangas and 3000 animes?

wow.

I call bullshit.

But anyway. I buy the occasional anime myself but generally I wont buy an anime I havent watched and REALLY enjoyed so there is a chance I'd probably drop the hobby altogether as I simply cant afford to pay £15+ for a single series.

Are we all just going to forget the fact that this person has spelt anime and manga incorrectly or is this person just trying to take the piss.

and to answer the question, no i wouldn't, because everything that i watch is streamed online and everything i read is found online, definitely not going to WASTE my money on anime and manga even though i'm pretty much addicted to it.

Mangoes? Hell yeah! Love em.

But anyway, I'd like to buy most if not all my favorite anime series/movies, but the prices kind of pull me away from it. If I wasn't so broke or if there's a special occasion coming up, sure. Plus, there are legal streaming sites like CR, Funimation, and Anime Network that you can sign up for free. And the subscriptions seem more reasonable.

Just buy whatever R1 companies come out with after doing some research so I won't spend money on shit.

When the R1 companies finally die I would just import Gundam and Code Geass since those are the only things that I would spend a ton of money for unless something else just as great catches my eye.

My two favorite manga titles I can buy already I just don't have the money so I'm just reading them for free atm. So I guess it would be tough luck for me until I can afford these.

I would definitely still continue with this as a hobby. A majority of what I watch these days are off of legal pay streams, so I don't think I'd have a problem.

But I'll admit that I wouldn't be as big a fan as I am today if I had stuck only to the legal physical media format of the 80s and 90s.

Today, I think it's much easier to be a paying fan.

Disregarding streams, legal or otherwise, if anime was physical format only, I would probably just stick to manga. Most of the money I spend for this hobby goes to light novels and manga anyway.

You mean without legal streaming?

If no, then yes, I'd continue. Legal streaming is how I watch all of the anime I watch anymore.

If yes, then I'd still continue. I'd just be much more picky about what I consume.

More or less give it up. Expensive plus you got to wait a lot longer for the manga volumes to come out instead of reading a chapter weekly online and you'd have to wait for animes to come out on DVD subbed or dubbed instead of watching an episode weekly etc etc. Basically you'd have to wait a lot longer to gain access to that stuff. Unless of course you have membership to sites like Crunchyroll.

Basically I'd buy the mangas/animes I'm already deeply into but then would probably stop. With of course maybe every now and then to check out if anything out interests me. However I'd pretty much have given it up.

Manga looks like a collector thing to me. Just like comic books some people read and toss while others keep, the read and tossers don't negate the collectible nature of books.

Anime being a physical product once it's copied to any media instantly becomes a hobby where people collect and keep the product.

Manga is debatable because as far as I know, there are no legal channels for reading manga online.

Anime, however, is fully digital and can be streamed at any time. Some people decide to start collecting it in addition to watching it but that doesn't define its nature as a hobby based on entertainment and art.

Well, I'd pay for crunchyroll if they subbed every series every season. I'd pay for DVDs if the shows I wanted to watch were licensed. But what if there were unlicensed shows that I wanted to watch? Would there be no fansubs in this scenario, or would the fansubs cost money? Because I'd buy the fansubbed bootlegs of shows I was interested in.

Bottom line, if it's still acquirable, I'd pay for it. Of course my consumption would go way down, but I'd still watch the shows that piqued my interest.
