This episode took on a much more mature tone and also gave more insight on its Gundam lore.

Char made a hell of an impression with not just his personality but also his charisma. I know it's still early in the series but episode gave old school Gundam vibes imo. Good stuff, they can build off more of this with its story, setting, and world building.

Not to say the new VA is bad, but I wonder why they didn't go with Ikeda Shuuichi for Char, considering he's still active.

I mean, the music is right out of the 79 series. The flashback arc is deliberately made to be like the old series, just with new mecha designs.

They cut out a LOT from this episode compared to the movie. The entire final confrontation of the war was cut including all of Char's awesome scenes and the beautiful sequence where he disappears. I really think people only watching the TV version are missing out on a big part of the experience. The placement of this after episode one also comes across as jarring. Releasing it as an episode 0 would have made the story flow better and would have made enough sense to new viewers.

@Dignity yeh hearing the new Char doesn't feel the same, still great

The thing I noticed most is how they keep showing how heavy the MS are, I absolutely love gundam doing it and it's so easy to just not do it with CGI, great job on the animators part!

Loved the references and appreciation towards the original gundam, I feared Char won't feel like Char but they completely nailed him! They keep proving themselves every single second of the show
The episode was fun and a great character showcase for char and Zeon, next episode is probably the last exposition episode, and after that we'll finally get a more in depth exploration of the characters

Seeing Char in a Mobile Suit designed almost half a century after his first ever appearance is nothing short of magical.

And those "shau" (shoe?) voiceclips in the eyecatches made my day

Gundam is not a part of my childhood so this nostalgia-inducing episode just flew over my head. But at least I can respect its highly impressive technical achievement, especially the sound department and the music department.

I enjoyed how much it reminded me of the OG series with the music and sound design, that was great. Loved seeing Char as well. Imo he was really accurate to how he was in UC timeline, originally was a bit worried he would be a completely different person. So far it seems like a faster paced version of UC with Solomon echoing the whole thing with Axis. Excited to see what happens next, and hopefully they explain what happened to Char.

This should have been episode 1 to be honest. Starting with an episode introducing the new cast, then ignoring them entirely in the second episode for a backstory featuring an entirely different cast of characters is just a bizarre choice all around and just makes things feel all over the place. It also just compounds how poor the characterisation in episode 1 was, as it'll end up being at least two weeks between introducing those characters and actually giving them character. And while all this exposition is necessary for those who don't know UC stuff, as someone who does I found it a little boring unfortunately.

As for Char's new voice actor, it initially threw me for a loop, but I honestly think he's doing a pretty good job of impersonating how Char should sound so I don't mind the change at all. I'm more bothered by the overuse of the Newtype sound for nostalgia purposes if anything, as the show just seemed to be using it here to convey "Char is doing something cool" rather than conveying the activation of his Newtype powers in relation to another Newtype's presence.

BEST EPISODE EVER! THE OST, THE OG GUNDAM SOUNDS, I DON'T MEAN TO BE ALL MEMBER BERRIES BUT EVEN THAT ASIDE WITH THE DUMMY THICC ZAKUS WERE ALL EXCELLENT! It was also so weird to see Char almost surprised with how easily the outcome of the war came into his hands!? Incredible sakuga, humans will no longer be held down by Earth's gravity, the title cards, so good umf! I WISH we get MORE CHAR, MORE CHAAAAR! It was so fun I loved it, I loved this episode please. I wonder if he still killed Kycillia or got any further revenge on the Zabis. God this episode was prime, the OP, so good.

Honestly, this was a fascinating view into an alternate history One Year War. The first episode was strong in its own right, but this provided some much-needed context while being engaging in its own right. Not to mention how rewarding it was for viewers of the original '79 series, from the use of the original's soundtrack to the replication of the opening scene of episode 1. I just wish the movie was readily available in English so I could see the scenes that weren't in the TV release.

So we have one of those weird OPs where both protagonists and antagonists are doing stuff together lol.

Last episode re-introduced voiced title cards back to Gundam for the first time with G-Reco AFAIK. This episode even had the title card BGM from 0079 play.

They skipped the opening narration and a couple of lines were skipped throughout. Eye-catches in the vein of 0079 were added, though.

The battle inside Solomon/Confeito from the Beginning movie was skipped over with only an external view of the Zeknova incident.
No Wakkein, no Sayla, no Gundam-coloured Light Cannon.

It says to be continued in episode 1 but then they preview episode 3. They really should've numbered this episode 0 or aired it in order.

You got to steal your Gundam or ain't a Gundam show!

Some retro OG music and sound effects.
Yey, for Guncannon being part of the action!
Yey, for the retro eyecatches!

A new [mechanical] face? Is RX-78-01 01 more of a GM? Also who was piloting it? He was good...unfortunately was forced to fight Char.

A Gundam with Zeon's logo...that feels weird.

They rushed the time table, but at least explained the Psycommu.

I've got really mixed feelings about this. It's a strange decision to have the opening episode be a punk, stylised show for a new generation; and then the second episode be nostalgia bait for the original series complete with recreated shots, the old soundtrack, sound effects and mid cards.

Maybe it meshed together better in the movie, but I'm worried trying to be two different shows is gonna end up pleasing noone.

I didn't get to see the movie, maybe this is an abridged version of the events but even as a UC fan I felt kinda lost due to the pacing. Really missing Shuichi Ikeda as Char, can't say I liked this new VA at all. The old 0079 sound effects and eyecatches were so jarring paired up with the modern CG animated MS. I hope the OYW plotline/Char saga stops with this episode and we get more content with our new cast.

@ForeverTraitor

The movie starts off with the 79 scenario (aka this episode), letting us know right from the bat that the timeline diverged due to Char getting the gundam and leading Zeon to victory and after that then there's a fast forward to how Machu got the gundam (aka episode one).

Odd way to structure this series. I didn’t realize there was a movie, but watching this I was thinking this episode should have been a prequel OVA or movie instead of randomly jumping to this after introducing the series main characters and plot. I enjoyed this episode but it felt rushed and I kept feeling reminded this is VERY different tone from what i watched last week. Ill give it a chance, as someone suggested I may watch the film if possible,

@Fintan The movie structure makes more sense but if they had this be episode 1 it would have been off-putting since this was basically kept secret in all the promo material and I think Sunrise also has some rule about the MC needing to get the Gundam in episode 1 which is why Victory Gundam's first 4 episodes seem like a clusterfuck since they take place out of order.

Man, that was such a throwback to 1979 Gundam.

We got to not only witness Char's backstory but do so in a remade version of the original run. Just listen to those transitions, to the sound effects, the flipping soundtrack. It's a feast of characters from the original series as well even if this is an alterante version and with the end of the second episode we come to know now where we stand in the first one. Aww, I wanted to keep following Char not this red haired girl.

Well, that was immensely interesting. An alternate timeline where Char got the Gundam, upgraded it with the Psycommu, won ZEON the war, but disappeared completely. So where the hell is he? Who's in the red Gundam now? And how did he/she get it? Quite intriguing.

And I am absolutely loving how bulky and heavy the MS and the weapons are. They've shown us the ammo for the head vulcan as well as for the hyper bazooka, and I appreciate it.
