Now... Now growing up your "taste" changes. You Move from the Pokemon TO the potential Aot/Death Note, Then Hentai (maybe) as well as The the more "serious" animes like Monster... I guess (dont know but they are out there)

Well what do you guys think how was your transition/makeshift whatever you want to call it, or did you not even experience one and you are enjoying animes that you watched as a kid.

And what animes do you classify as "Serious Animes"
I am a COMPLETIONIST. Aiming to finish AS MANY ANIME as possible before DEATH, Despite them being SATISFACTORY or if they are BORING.

I WATCH THE LOWEST SCORED/RATED/RANKED ANIMES ON MAL (OR you can CALL THEM The WORST animes in the WORLD - No Joke Like Seriously)

No anime has actually satisfied my anime taste, That I can call a MasterPiece (10/10), still searching... hopefully one day I will find that show and obsess over it till I die.

For me, it was pretty much the opposite. From Death Note/Tokyo Ghoul/3-gatsu no Lion to K-On!/Non Non Biyori/Love Live!/Strike Witches, etc.

Well, I still like some dark and serious shows, but nowadays I mostly prefer slice of life, comedies, music, and ecchi anime.

just because one is getting older doesn't mean they will start liking more serious and mature animes. it all depends on how someone's taste is changing based on the animes they have watched in the past, what type of content they are being exposed to, their real life experiences, sudden fascination with a new genre and what not.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.

Essentially the seriousness is inversely proportional to the amount of comedy, so shows with little comedy are more serious.

My tastes have certainly changed and I'm definitely more critical than when I first started watching anime, but I don't really stick to either more or less mature shows. So long as I enjoy the show is all that really maters to me.

Aot and Death Note ? No, thats anime for teens. Same as Hellsing. And same with hentai. I mean I know there is such thing as rating, but REAL (not the one on paper) target audience are kids/teens who wants to see blood and dumb, massive massacres (or boobs and sex if we talk about cartoon porn).

Before the age of 20 I would never watch Monster, LoGH or even Non Non Biyori. Because those titles are too slow. But now ? 2 of them are masterpieces and Non Non Biyori is good, funny thing. So I would say - you are grow up if you can easily watch something slower instead fast pace all the time.

I started off watching a mix of dumb and more "serious" anime. The jump to a show like Darker Than Black didn't take long at all. Not only that, but the jump to super horny didn't take long at all either. Then again, I was at or at least close to that really horny age. Really not much has changed other than less frequent anime watching and not caring as much about horny ecchi or even hentai shows, despite still liking the content within them.

As for what I consider "serious", honestly it's hard to consider alot of the things of watched serious, even the stuff marketed to an older audience. Whether that be intentional or unintentional on the writers part. I mean, so many of the plots and characters are nonsensical by nature that even if they aren't leaning heavily on comedy, they still kinda funny to me. Like Goblin Slayer for example. I get why the guy hates goblins, but the idea of a guy obsessed with killing them and the goblins themselves are all kinda hard to take seriously. Don't get me wrong, I don't really consider this a bad thing, as long as it's fun to watch, it's just something I've thought about.

I don't think you can assume people like to watch more "serious" things as they get older. I think it's a misconception. Even in cases where you think you observe this effect, it's often due to societal norms than actual taste. Sure, you may get tired of certain tropes, or start to dislike certain naive depictions of people. But an anime doesn't need to be "serious" to have characters whose mere existence doesn't make you facepalm.

I like to think I'm still at the beginning stages of my anime watching career. I started watching primarily shonen and fighting heavy anime. Moved over to romance comedy and more light hearted content. Then I shifted into older classics like Patlabor and Cowboy Bebop. Now I'm just an enjoyer of all things. I find myself drifting towards shows that have characters I find to be interesting or just enjoyable. My love for seiyuus has exploded in the last couple years as well.

Recently I've been keeping a comedy and something somewhat serious in my rotation and I've been satisfied. Not sure what I'll be watching 5-10 years from now

The main shift from what I tended to watch at the beginning to what I watch now was to better appreciate cute slice of life stuff. Though it's not as if these cannot be serious.

I wouldn't try defining "serious anime". There is no way to do such things satisfactorily and no way to make use of such a definition.

I suppose it depends on what stage of older you are referring to. In my experience I started watching simple cartoons like everyone else. Digimon Adventures was my favorite. From teen to mid 20s or so you would watch more "serious" anime or shows either because you want to feel more like an adult in your teens or you simply like complex storytelling as a young adult. And then in my case as I got in my 30s, I really mellowed out. It's not like I suddenly stop watching or liking "serious" shows but I've grown to appreciate more chill shows that are more slice of life like.

As far as what would I classify as "serious anime"? That's hard to define. Just because an anime or manga is listed as seinen I wouldn't consider it "serious", nor would I consider anything listed as "shounen" as childish.

Surprisingly, I don't think my tastes have changed much since my favorite anime as a child was for adults.

Well, there are some anime that I don't really like to watch anymore as an adult. Also, I didn't have a transition period where I got into the hentai genre.

The only thing that has changed is that I no longer actively watch seasonal anime, and I no longer watch long-running anime shows every week.

As for serious anime, I think the most recent one I've seen is Darker Than Black.

Watching plenty of anime, I don't only stick to just serious stuff since I'm almost 40. I'd run out of anime to watch if I only stuck to one type of anime. Serious stuff likely being target audience of seinen or josei if you like anime made more for older women interests. Sometimes watching a dumb anime to turn your brain off to is also refreshing.

Well what do you guys think how was your transition/makeshift whatever you want to call it, or did you not even experience one and you are enjoying animes that you watched as a kid.

And what animes do you classify as "Serious Animes"

Serious Anime is mostly just a myth. Anime as a medium was never meant to be serious in the 1st place. Actual serious story telling in Anime is extremely rare and even more rare when you are just looking for titles to actually watch that are entertaining enough to actually spend the time watching in the 1st place.

While not a standard thing to happen and there are exceptions, likely those who get old enough and have been watching Anime for decades tend to gravitate in the regressive manner if they are still into Anime at all by that point. Specifically watching Anime reminiscent to what they use to consume when younger or even New titles that make them feel younger no matter what the subject manner is about or even the genre. And there is simply just those whos taste just never change at all.

While it's not subjective to all Anime, where it's typical a young adult who is single will likely sometimes gravitate to consuming Hentai at some point in time in their adult life. That same adult could potentially get married later on in real life and get into their 40s will likely not watch Hentai anymore, specifically modern Hentai.

Some Older Anime fans will likely just go back and re-watching Anime that would be considered retro now and not even bother with modern titles no matter how grown up and adult like new Anime might try to come off as.

Sure some Anime is more serious than others but it's a bit far fetched to say something like even AoT is a serious Anime when you got giant goofy humanoids running around mindlessly killing people. A majority of Fans simply just watch the series due to the gore, action, and violence. You take all the gore, action, and violence away from AoT and most likely you would get a pretty lame Anime to watch.

Even if someone thinks their taste have evolved in a more serious nature to consume so-called serious things, one who is an actual Anime fan will eventually just turn to watch whatever is being offered regardless how serious it is as long as it entertains them. Because there is not like a slew of seasonal Anime that gets constantly released amounting to "Monster" clones. Where I would argue the most serious thing about "Monster" is the fact it's mostly just a seriously long series to watch.

As I kid I watched the famous anime for kids of the 90s, Pokémon, Digimon, Metabots, Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and some Captain Tsubasa and Dragon Ball.

As a teenager I bought Dragon Ball Z and GT on dvds and since I got Internet I began watching fighting shounen and famous anime from the 00s.

Then in 2013 with Evangelion and 2015 with Serial Exoeriments Lain I basically moved on to watch "serious anime".

I don't remember when exactly but at some point I started to enjoy childcare series, so now I also watch those kind of shows.

I was never one to watch many animated hentai, but doujinshis I have been reading for years now, I'm at my worst now in that regard.

Maybe serious anime is an animated show that doesn't have a lot of 'weird stuff' in it, whatever that 'weird' stuff is depends on individual perspective/definition. Shows that are purposefully abstract and rely on weird stuff could be serious in their own way, yet, they still don't seem very serious to me...

Both the Tone and the Content of this show I think are 'serious.' So, I'm fairly sure this is a serious anime.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/798/Yomigaeru_Sora__Rescue_Wings

Welcome to the N.H.K. does not have a serious tone (in general) but the content of this show is arguably serious. However, since it also has a lot of (imo) weird stuff in it, then I wouldn't consider it a very serious show.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/1210/NHK_ni_Youkoso

Barakamon might be a serious anime even though the tone of it is lighthearted. It also has a grounded and realistic narrative
https://myanimelist.net/anime/22789/Barakamon

Maybe because of 'realism,' a show may automatically lean closer to seriousness?
Most watchers probably consider most anime 'mixed' in the seriousness vs goofiness aspect. Even those ridiculous isekai with their ridiculous plots may offer serious moments or concepts.

My taste has not changed that much.I like both serious and less serious shows the only changes I can think is my opinions for some shows which is bound to happen at some point and that I like some genres I used to dislike in the past like slice of life.

As for what I clasify as serious it depends on the themes of the show and how the anime will approach them.

I don't see it as "my taste has changed" but rather "my taste has evolved". When I first delved into anime, I was drawn to more light-hearted and action-packed stuff, enjoying the excitement and thrill they offered. However, as time has passed, I find myself gravitating towards more serious and thought-provoking anime. I've come to appreciate the depth and complexity that serious anime brings to the table, something that the younger me couldn't do.

It's not like I'm an entirely different person now. I still enjoy some stuff the same way I did before. It's just that my level of knowledge and experience have expanded, allowing me to appreciate a wider range of genres, themes, styles, narratives, etc.

"Getting Older And Watching More Serious Anime"

What? Naaah...
Where's the fun in that?

Not to mention that many many supposedly serious shows aimed at adults, like My Home Hero are outright stupid. On the other hand many supposedly serious shows aimed at teens. like 86 are outright stupid too. So usually "serious" is not worth it.

Quality drama like Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is rare and in this case even combined with comedy. And yes, my example is josei. Even the newest well done drama I have watched is josei - Oooka. Apparently seinen lacks ambition, nowadays one can only hope for some adventure dark comedy like Undead Girl Murder Farce.

@Pokkitaru

You bring up a pretty good argument. Thought provoking is not the same as serious. A comedy can be thought provoking no serious than some trashy Ecchi title produced simply just to flaunt animated panty shots that tries to arouse horny viewers.

As an example "Chio's School Road" is no more of a serious Anime than that of "Ladies vs butlers", but "Chio's School Road" is actually pretty thought provoking in it's own right even as a comedy. While there are Anime titles that also exist that try to take itself way more serious than some thought provoking comedy.

It reminds me of a friend who use to love watching Ecchi Anime back in the early 2000s. In fact most of the Anime they owned on physical media was just a bunch of trashy Ecchi titles and Hentai with extremely hilarious premises. Then fast forward today I find them watching general mainstream Anime which most is not serious in nature by itself. It's just Modern story telling has evolved where even a comedy can get produced to be thought provoking.

I still watch some Shonen, and I have a tendency to enjoy Ecchi because I find it humorous. So, I guess my tastes have changed, but I still appreciate the older stuff too. These days, with most of my kids grown up, I find that I have more time to watch anime.

I watch whatever comes out that's good for the most part. I feel like more of the shows coming out in recent years have felt more comedic/lighthearted than the anime back a decade or more ago. I can't really even think of any anime in the 2000's that were purely comedic.. maybe law of ueki? It feels like the genre has changed a lot this past decade, also reflecting the tastes of the newer generation I suppose.

I'm also in a place where I have already seen enough anime lecturing on right/wrong/feelings that I kind of just want to watch something dumb and funny to turn off my brain after a long day of work, so I guess you could say my tastes went from serious/dark to light/comedic :)
