It seems to me that the term "weeb" used to be a term used by anime haters to mock us, but it seems like some people have reclaimed the term for anime fans, and it doesn't seem to be as much of an insult anymore. I remember back in the day when it was used to mock us for being anime fans, although I think the longer "weaboo" was more common back then. Some people here talk about how the term "otaku" was used by our fandom to describe everyone here back in the day, but now I only hear it used to describe anime fans who are from Japan. Back when I first got into anime, we mostly just called ourselves "anime fans", with the occasional self-proclaimed "otaku".

So, what do you think of the term "weeb"? Do you use it yourself, dislike the term, or have no opinion on it?

I've never openly claimed to be a weeb but i'd probably consider myself one. I know what you mean about people using to mock people who enjoy anime infacti still see people on instagram and tiktok who try to use it to be rude but i could honestly careless. Overall if you use the term weeb then you use it i dont care as i said i'd consider myself one.

I still dislike the term weeb because I still associate it with the negative connotations that the word had in the past. Also, I feel like people who self-identity themselves as weebs tend to be a bit unfiltered with what they're saying, but at the same time, I'm not going to be the word police and get mad at someone if they call me a weeb.

Yes, I remember that's how things were. It was an insult directed toward foreign anime fans who take what they like (related to anime) to an extreme degree. Now some people see it as a praise or proudly call themselves weebs, ironically or unironically, but I still see it as an insult. I never call myself a weeb and I use anime fans to describe people who, well, enjoy watching anime.

I used to refer to myself as an otaku and, while the popular opinion is that only Japanese people are allowed to call themselves as one, I have a different opinion simply because otaku originally means "someone who is very passionate with what they like".

I think about the word weeb all the time, in fact that's all I ever think about. The syntax, the pronounciation, punctuation, the spiritual meaning behind this mysterious mantra

I don't really know the etymology of the term, but it has a connotation of someone who thinks anime is better than other storytelling media, which I disagree with.

Thrown around like nowadays I ignore it/never use it.

I may have joined in 2014 but I still prefer certain terms if I 'have' to use them in a sentence.

I keep to anime fan, weeaboo or otaku and that's it.

I get weeb makes sense just like doujin/doujishi but still.

I have always used it as a synonym for "anime fan". It has never held any meaning to me outside of that. I even remember some people from years ago now, trying to tell me that it's some kind of pejorative, when I never actually saw anyone use it like that. In either case, it never bothered me. I think it's a good thing that people use it more loosely now, since it's silly to get upset over such things.

This ground is soiled by those before me and their lies. I dare not look up for on me I feel their eyes

I personally don't use it when it comes to referring to fans of anime. I just simply consider people with a passion for watching anime "fans."

It's lost its meaning and became overused very quickly, I also just don't really care and it was a lackluster insult if it was used that way.

I embrace my weeb status though it is no longer much of an insult as it used to be.  Lol
Identifying as an Otaku just sounded way more cringe, and lacking self awareness.

I think it's a nice word but it's hard to rhyme with.

When I first became a weeb
I went singing like a grebe:*
I was happy through and through
To be watching animu.

* bird of the genus Podiceps or family Podicipedidæ, characterized by a short body, flattened and lobed feet set far behind, and the almost entire absence of tail.

I don't like it cuz it sounds stupid tbh. I just use the term "anime fan" to refer to people who like anime. Feels more natural to be honest

Its usage reminds me of the development of the word "nigga" (don't ban mods this is a highly scientific linguistic post).
Me personally I use it both ways but I trend towards the negative usage because it sounds funny and also making fun of certain weeb behavior is fun even though I'm part of the community (this is applied experimental linguisics See? Very scientific).

"What you do think of the term "weeb"?"

It's an insult, but I am going along with it, since there's no explaining to the uninitiated what is being an anime fan is and that there are different groups of fans with different patters of behavior.

"but it seems like some people have reclaimed the term for anime fans"

And those guys make me feel ashamed even more - particularly the lewd crowd, the battle shounen supremacists and the isekai trash aficionados.
But whatever, I usually comment "I am not a weeb actually, only an anime addict".

I don't care. Queer started as an insult too until people used it for themselves, so I just use it sometimes.

So basically this is what I think:

  • language evolves
  • nobody should feel forced to adopt new definitions
  • boomers should avoid schooling people on obsolete terminology
  • weeb is more ironic and self aware than otaku
  • I'm in favour of terms losing at least part of their negative connotation when it's undeserved (e.g. "bitch").

I would call myself a Weeb, since I also enjoy other related Japanese stuff such as kaiju movies (and other Japan movies) & puroresu. Otaku always seems confined just to Animanga and doesn't quite fit what I am, unless there's another word I don't know of?

I'm more or less the same here, but don't care either way to be honest as long it's not taken out of context when used.

I think that all of those terms still have negative connotation behind it, it being especially clear to anime fans themselves. although, some anime enjoyers like to call themselves that, which is obviously fine. i don't really feel the need to call myself anything for watching anime, i'm just watching animation that comes from Japan. no need to label me as anything for it 👍

I don't like the word, it's sounds kind of cringe. Even though anime fans have reclaimed the word it still doesn't change the fact that it sounds cringe.

I hate how "weeb" and "weaboo" sounds. Sounds like weevil or something.

From my understanding otaku in Japan is any intense interest in something where someone is specialized in it, so similar to nerd but without inherent stigma in origin of the term only stigma from how some act.
