Annual manga lists, such as the "Kono Manga ga Sugoi!" rankings and Manga Taisho Award, are a great way to find new manga to read. There is only one problem: many of the titles which appear in these lists have yet to be licensed overseas (and aren't guaranteed to ever be).

"You Should Read This Manga" aims to create an annual manga discovery list for the international fan. Passionate manga readers—MAL members, bookstore employees, and more—can nominate any title that has recently been licensed and released outside Japan. While this doesn't guarantee all finalist manga will be available in every region, it greatly increases the probability for it to be licensed (now or in the future).

Nomination Criteria
You Should Read This Manga (min. 1 title, max. 5 titles)
    • At least one volume of the manga was published overseas in 2022.
    • The manga's Rank and Popularity are not in the Top 50.
    • You really want to recommend this manga to a friend!

    Should be anime (optional)
    • Cannot have an anime adaptation in the last 5 years.

    Best for beginners (optional)
    • Can easily be enjoyed by new manga readers (e.g. who have read 5 titles or less).

    Unique art/story (optional)
    • For well-versed manga readers who are looking for something fresh.

    Deadline: Feb 27, 7pm PST

Not sure which manga to nominate?
We compiled a non-exhaustive list of eligible titles, which can be found here: Eligible Manga List

Use the "My List" filter on Desktop to see which manga you're currently reading or have completed.

Titles do not need to be included on this list to be nominated. As long as they meet the above criteria, please send them to us anyway!
Missing manga can also be reported here.

We're looking forward to seeing your nominations! (。•̀ᴗ-)✧

My vote goes for: Ragna Crimson.

Seriously, Ragna Crimson is an awesome manga and the anime will be released this year, I just hope the anime turns out to be as good as the manga, there are plenty of good mangas out there that have crappy anime adaptations unfortunately so I hope this doesn't happen with Ragna Crimson.

This is a great idea and I hope it garners enough participation—I may mainly read completed series, but there's still some in mind I'd love to recommend!

Definitely happy to see Beauty and the Beast of Paradise Lost and Prince Freya (especially the former) made it into the list for sure.

My vote goes for  Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku. Seriously tho, I didn't think i would enjoy a high school romance this much.

Edit: I guess I can't nominate this one, pretty sad. At least I can still vote for Tongari Boushi no Atelier

Real mo Tama ni wa Uso wo Tsuki is my pick.

Despite it featuring crossdressing it's not really a "crossdressing manga" so if you're not into that kind of stuff you don't have to worry too much. It's a pretty cute manga and romance.

Does a Manga need to be physically published to be eligible? Last year the global MangaUP! app launched which led to a lot of manga getting a global release through that app only, and many don't have a physical release.

Sadly, we couldn't find a license for that one in any language orz. I've heard good things so hopefully someone will pick it up soon!

Nope, a digital release is OK! Many titles are unfortunately locked in digital land (looks at Chihayafuru) so we didn't want to confine it to physical only.

I've definitely taken a step back from catching up on current manga, let alone ones published in 2022. Glad to see Kuroshitsuji is on there tho! The story/art style has progressed so beautifully and happy to recommend it.

What's the point of limiting it only to published overseas? It will be just more of the same, since it went through licensing filter already. You're much more likely to find something interesting among fan translated series.

I want to nominate Blue Giant.  If you like music themed mangas this is a good one.  It follows Dia, who wants to become the greatest jazz sax player.  I read it  will be movie I think in '24.
Which one do you want? An Addiction or A Good Life?
A) Addiction - a progressive narrowing of the things that bring you pleasure.
B) A Good Life - a progressive expansion of the things that bring you pleasure and includes pleasure through motivation and hard work.

rather than a problem, the fact that many of the titles which appear in these lists have yet to be licensed overseas (and aren't guaranteed to ever be) is a blessing in disguise. personally i harbor ill will when a fanscanlated manga from decades ago that you've already read gets officially published in english so you feel ocdbligated to reread the new version from the very beginning which in essence disrespectfully invalidates your initial accomplishment and time investment of having completed a series. currently i'm in such predicament with close to 30 titles as of writing now. for the record i even ordered the complete elfen lied and gantz omnibus editions to see how the professional vs amateur tls compare but it gets quite tiresome to keep backtrack of all the changes. however it's an entirely different case if raws are involved. because of this very reason, i'd like to nominate akuma no memumemu-chan

Ummm its a very unpopular manga. Its korean. Title is "American Ghost Jack". Very beautiful story. I loved it so much. It has 2 parts. And the manga type is romance, horror. Recommended 10/10

The fact it has to be published overseas doesn't really make sense, since if the series is getting picked up for an international release means it already has an established public, we want to know hidden gems that wouldn't otherwise be nominated because they're buried and we're counting on mal friends to recommend them to us.

I nominate Akuma no Memumemu-chan.

As a former mango elitist I understand the struggle of wanting to read mango's in their proper form. But they as much as anime from my experience are neglected and bombarded to hell by "false fans" and even so are well forgotten overtime and buried.
May the gods be in ya'lls favor.
