Heyy~ Just wanted to start some casual discussion of the anime of this period. Due to my age, this feeling called nostalgia kept creeping up behind me more and more frequently ( ≖.≖). Would like to read about some love for the anime of this period that will resonate with me in my bouts of nostalgia hahaha. Also! Will be great to hear some of your favourite anime of this period OR modern anime with similar vibes as recommendations too! Few of my favourite things about anime from this period is that the stories have a sense of realism to them. Also maybe because life then is very different from life now which reflects in the stories that mangakas and authors' write, the interaction between characters are much more "raw". The topics that are portrayed in anime then also seems less sugar coated. There's also this sense of humour that can only exist then(?). Some of my favourite anime are: GTO Gokusen Hana Yori Dango Get Backers Cowboy Bepop Ouran HSHC Nana Not saying that the anime of this period are "perfect" or superior to the anime now. Is just an appreciation post for us like minded people to share some love and thoughts we have for these anime. ٩(˘◡˘)۶ |

There's this whimsical element to them! Oh ghost in the shell is still sitting in my to watch list because I am always so slowww to watch anime in movies format. Oh wow I remember Yuu Yuu Hakusho airing on TV. This show was really action packed. Maybe I should add this in my to watch list to watch it in whole. Though I have not watched all that you listed. But they are definitely titles that I can put an image to. These anime really did make themselves known, which really shows their impact and influences in the industry. |

Oh my... Digimon, Pokemon, Doreamon, Sailor MOon, ahahha my childhood!! I remember catching Azumanga on TV back then, the comedy is ridiculous, not in a bad way. I would be watching like Totally Spies on Disney in the afternoon, and then switch channels in the evening to catch animes there. The contrast between cartoons and animes is huge. All these animes that I watched on TV bring back memories. I can still remember the layout of my room and the big fat TV that I watch them on when I think about them. |

Ever seen The Big O? It was pretty popular on Toonami when it came out. The creators were like "Wouldn't it be cool if Bruce Wayne drove a 60s giant robot and had a cute android girl companion? Also the opening theme is Flash Gordon and the ending is fucking weird" |

The music from the clip is also straight out from that era. Hahhaha~ The synopsis and plot seems pretty solid too. I am so glad I started this thread. Getting to broaden my horizons on old animes is a joyy~ |

The late 90s to 2000s era is the best in my opinion most of my favorites are from then. Here are some: Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha (2004) Shakugan no Shana (2005) To Heart (1999) Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (2003) Seikai no Monshou (1999) |

I am surprised that nobody has brought up Outlaw Star yet. Anyway, I am rewatching The Big O and I am loving this show all over again. Other favorites: Cowboy Bebop Mad Bull 34 (a bit of a dumpster fire, as far as a quality production is concerned, but the funniest thing I have ever seen from Japan) Black Jack (OVA) Kishin Douji Zenki Gundam Wing Some late 1980s series that continued into the 1990s: Dragon Ball Z Ranma 1/2 Nettohen Warau Salesman Oishinbo |

Why only late 90s? Golden Age of anime starts in 70s. Ok, here are some nice things from the Golden Age I've randomly recalled: Lupin III. Space Cobra. Countless Gundams and countless Leiji Matsumoto series. Kyou Kara Ore Wa. Otokojuku. Trigun. Dominion. Patlabor. Taiho Shichau Zo. Grappler Baki. Hikaru no Go. Rozen Maiden. Azumanga. |

This a post I can get behind! I've been rewatching anime from my childhood from the 90s and 2000's. I got a couple recommendations for you. Zoids Chaotic Century- Just watched it in full subs front to back a month ago. Definitely holds up. The CGI is still impressive, even for today. Apparently Xebec won a bunch of awards for their animation tech and the per episode cost was ridiculous. So when Zoids switched studios, the animation quality dropped to almost unwatchable. Surprisingly, not that much was edited for the dub. But the jokes hit harder in the OG JP dub. Zoids New Century Zero- There is no way to watch it uncensored as of yet. But Ko Otani (you may know him from Gundam Wing and Outlaw Star) composed the music and the show is a great time from beginning to end. It really deserved a sequel. Brigadoon: Marin to Melan- Found out about it on MAL. It is definitely a 7 out of 10 show but it is unique in a ton of ways. A preteen girl MC, a reverse isekai that involves robots and mecha, a mystery that is much better resolved in the manga than the anime, and best of all, Murder Mom. I love Murder Mom. She may well be my favorite character of the 2000s. VS Knight: Lamune and 40 Fire- I found out about this show randomly on Youtube and I am still watching it now. If you want to bring back the old feeling of the 90's you owe it to yourself to watch this show. It even had Team Rocket before Team Rocket, as the baddies get launched away in an explosion and the anime came out a couple months before the first Pokemon. Cyborg 009: The Cyborg Soldier- I rewatched this anime last year. It was easy to see why my kid self loved this show. It turned out my adult self still loves this show. Watch it with the sub so you can hear Norio Wakamoto deliver one of his best performances ever as Black Ghost. The show has a lot of episodic episodes, but whenever they focus on a serious arc, everything dials up to 11. Also, the official last episode is episode 48. The last three episodes was the mangaka working on creating a brand new arc to end the story. Unfortunately, he died before that could happen. But the last three episodes are a nice what if. Yu Gi Oh- I have no interest in rewatching this show. But if you grew up in the 2000's, this show was inescapable. If you want a little darkness, check out Yu Gi Oh 0 season. There was an anime based on what Yu Gi Oh was about before cards and its some twisted stuff. I liked those story ideas better personally, but the heart of the cards will always win. Medabots- 2 different seasons with different animation. It was a big deal if you were a kid in the 2000's. The second season had an amazing OP song. Definitely give it a listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB24kdinVPk&ab_channel=cyandic You already know about Digimon and Pokemon. There is nothing to say about those shows. But did you know the new Digimon show *Digimon: Ghost Game* is actually excellent. Like shockingly so. I wish I had a show this awesome when I was growing up. Spoiler warning. This show gets dark. Really really dark. From episode 13 onwards, you're gonna wonder if kids should even be watching things like this. Those kids are gonna be fine. The Vision of Escaflowne- An incredible 10 out of 10 show. And isekai before it became overdone. The OG english dub is fantastic. The new one they did is trash. The Japanese dub is great as well. Shoujo, Mecha, and hot blooded action mixed into a fantastic show. Try to watch the remastered Blu Ray version if possible. The art is gorgeous. Please avoid the Escaflowne movie. It's not worth your time. Scryed- Probably the most underrated 2000's show ever put out. If you watch the dub, Steve Blum might have his greastest VA role as the MC here. It's a show about people with super powers, but its more mature than it sounds. The Rivals final fight in this show is one of the greastest Rival fights ever animated. You could probably enjoy it even if you don't know the stakes. Also, the show's ost is fantastic. Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water- Low key, a better show than NGE if you don't count the filler episodes. It was directed by Hideki Anno before NGE and Shiro Sagisu did the music. A lot of the stuff you enjoy in NGE is here. Anguish, Emotional Turmoil, sweet mecha action, and incredible art. Apparently, Anno drew a lot of frames himself because he wanted everything to be just right. Also, Studio Ghibli originally intended this to be their anime, so a lot of Ghibli story element are in it as well. Hunter X Hunter 1999- Did you know HXH 2011 was a remake of another show? I found this show looking for something to scratch the itch for another great Togashi story. The OVA's got me into the manga and the rest was history. I watched the 1999 anime 2 years ago with the english dub and it's better than the 2011 version in a handful of ways. It's a great time. Tho I still give the edge to 2011. Eureka Seven- A lot of older anime fans grew up watching this mecha anime. It's a romance between a human boy and alien. It takes its time and is enjoyable from beginning to end. If you like episodes 22 to 24, then you will know if the show is for you. Those are some of the best episodes this show has to offer. They even tried remaking them for a movie, but it didn't compare to the show. |

Have seen it been referenced in several "throw back" themed contents from Asian content creators. But agree that is still underrated as it was not more widely "distributed". Pretty sure it could haven been a bigger hit if more people known about this (purely assuming this from how people who actually watched this when it aired had good things to say about it). Kekkaishi is Underrated definitely! I caught this on TV when i was younger, and it was funn to watch! Infact is on my to watch list now just for rewatch purpose! |

I am not into mecha, but the huge fanbase speaks for the awesomeness of this show! Detective Conan is Iconic! I know of people who are still following the manga. This show has been there since before I could even watch my first anime~ Hahaha. I think long running shows like this are cool in the sense that they grow with a person from their childhood to adulthood. I knew Monster was a great show because of its depth. But when I saw this on TV, I really wasn't able to understand the show at all. It was too confusing and psychological for my small brain then hahah. Is in my to watch list now because I really want to watch this in its whole and able to enjoy it as much as how others did. Hopefully my adult brain can comprehend and appreciate this show better when i get around to watching it~ |

Though I have not tasted one that is as good as the show depicted. hahahha I have completely forgotten about Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. But I completely forgotten how the game is played now. Actually HXH is on my to watch list. Have been there for sometime. I am actually reluctant to watch it because of it incomplete story. I know it will eat me alive to not be able to not complete a story that I started. I thought HXH 2011 was a remake of the original HXH? They have the same characters and the same plot I thought? What another story was this a remake of? Anyway~~ great news that the mangaka is continuing the HXH story!! Hope his health continues to improve too! So Hunter X Hunter had a manga first, then the Hunter X Hunter 1999 show and OVA's. Those OVA's got me into the manga, but I didn't watch the OG show. Then they redid the show in 2011 because they had more stuff from the manga to animate. If you watch Hunter X Hunter 2011, it has a perfect ending. Unlike the manga, the show is about the MC looking for his dad. When the MC gets his answer, the show ends. There is some great stuff if you want to keep the story going, but you will definitely be satisfied with the anime ending. Turn's out the Yu Gi Oh guy died trying to rescue a family in rough water. He died a hero. |

Another big fan of 90's anime and the "purple feeling" (nickname used to express the feeling you get from the retro backgrounds with loads of purple and pink hues, for me a perfect example is Yokohama Shopping Log backgrounds, especially the underwater nighttime city at the end of ep 2). My top shows from this period would include Tenchi Muyo, Slayers, Escaflowne, Azumanga Daioh along with the crazy rom-coms from the early to mid 2000's like Magikano, Girls Bravo, Good Luck Ninomiya-kun and Magicians Academy. The vibe from 90's and early 2000's shows is very different from a lot of modern shows. |

I could feel the passion just from reading your post, and am humbled by it. I really enjoyed your little review and trivia for each of the anime you listed. I actually would go read up on each anime that is in each reply in this thread to know more about them. Your little bits of information saved me some research time to understand what the anime is about, hahaha. Thank You~ NGL, most of the anime you listed, I have never heard of them. Here are some favorites from that era of mine although I feel these might be a bit too "normie": Takahashi's original run of Yu-Gi-Oh (both adaptations meaning "Season 0" and the Duel Monsters anime) has such a nice aesthetic that it TO THIS DAY has had an impact on me when it comes to art style of my own drawings, fashion, and I like a lot of the old school monster designs. The disturbing imagery from the early manga chapters are also so fucking good. The manga was printed between 1996-2004 and the anime series were released between 1998-2004 (with about a year and a few months gap between Season 0 and Duel Monsters). Yu Yu Haksuho is also amazing with its character designs and clothing as well, the colors used for shading really popping as well making a really nice looking aesthetic. I've started to get back into Bleach and the character design and clothing and fashion aesthetic definitely falls into a similar level of Yu-Gi-Oh with its drip and influence on my own artwork. I guess I'm just biased towards fashionable clothing and long limbed character proportions |
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place. |

Oh look a thread about my least favorite era of anime. As for the reason why it's mostly due to art style and the awkward change from traditional animation to digital animation. But since this is appreciation thread, I can try There are few TV shows not yet mentioned (at least didn't see...) I like Ashita no nadja - good children show that isn't afraid of touching heavier topics now and then. It is very much like older generic shoujo story, but it's one of the reason why I like it. Shion no ou - don't remember much of the episodes, but it did capture my attention. And has memorable scenes that I still remember. Majin tantei nougami neuro - Main characters' interaction is some funny shit. And it went into the weird direction many times. Bird demon good demon. Wolf's rain - this made me feel many things. I used to draw fan art of this show when I was around 11 year old. I went around trying to find more shows about dog animals, it was a phase in my life, found this. I honestly don't remember much about the plot, but really liked the art style and characters. Tsume and Blue ❤️ |
