Most of the time, anime movies which are based on a TV series turn out to be glorified fillers which are boring as hell. But some movies I've rated higher than the actual series are:

- The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
- Naruto: The Last
- Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale
- No Game No Life Zero

So is there an anime movie based on a TV series which you enjoyed much more than expected?

The Rurouni Kenshin OVAs are works of art. I loved the anime, but the movies gave us the dark storylines that the anime tended to ignore to keep it feeling more lighthearted. So in comparison, some of the movie scenes are really haunting. The overall feeling is very different, too.

Well
-Gintama movie 2
-No game no life zero
"Everyone is a slave to their past. No matter how much you wish to move forward, the events of yesteryear will bear down on you like the light of the stars as soon as you glance up. Unable to laugh or to banish your past, you carry it ceaselessly in a corner of your heart, waiting for it to resurrect at an inopportune moment."

- Chuunibyou movie (finally got what we wanted)
- Kizumonogatari trilogy
- Zoku Owarimonogatari (Idk if this counts, but MAL listed it as a movie)
- NGNL Zero
- Youjo Senki movie

(most of these I didn't rate higher than the actual series, but I still really liked them a lot)

End of Evangelion, but it's not for everyone just like TV season. If you can find hidden meanings in dementia works and actually enjoy it, you may like it.

I didn't really like Kizumonogatari tbh, TV seasons are much better in showing its true style's potential IMO.

I also like NGNL movie even more than TV season.

Cowboy Bebop movie is also pretty good.

And of course Mushishi movies are good.
I hate everyone equally

There are some really good ones but it would have to be either Fate/stay night - Heavens Feel 2 or The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. Heavens Feel 2 has a great story, ost, and easily the best animation ufotable has given us yet. As someone who loves the Fate franchise, HF2 is basically a wet dream. Although I didn’t think the anime was anything special, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is an easy masterpiece. Would highly recommend watching the series just to experience it.

Mine are:
- The End of Evangelion
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion
- The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
- The 3rd Berserk Golden Age Arc movie.
- The Adolescence of Utena
- The Gurren Lagann recap movies (all the added content, like the extended final battle, made them an absolute joy to watch. They are above and beyond most typical recap movies).

I'd also like to give a shout-out to Bleach's Hell Verse and Fade to Black. Despite being shounen filler movies, they were epic and fun to watch.

Pokemon movie 1, 2, 3, 8
still lot of others I've yet to see

and I was told by a big fan that certain Mobile Suit Gundam compilation movies are great, especially the first 3 which take out unnecessary stuff from the original series that was used to sell toys

One Piece Stampede was the ultimate fanservice movie.

Kuroko no Basket Last Game was also amazing.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Based on ova series

I think one of the best One Piece movies is the 6th one. I actually got emotional watching it. I'd say it's right behind Film Z, Strong World, and basically the most recent One Piece movies. The art style is different from the original but it isn't bad.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya and Black Butler Book of Atlantic are my favorite movies based on the series. Because unlike most movies based on a tv show they're actually sequels adapted from the source material. And they're pretty great movies (especially the former which I gave a 10).

Bungou Stray Dogs Dead Apple is also good (it is based on a spin off manga).

For original anime, Cowboy Bebop the Movie is the best. I would also say Madoka Magica Rebellion and End of Evangelion were also decent.

Blood-C Last Dark due to making Saya like she should be, as opposed to the TV series. Reminded me of the original movie a little

Heartcatch Precure Paris movie is also another nice addition to the series.

Dog of Flanders movie is how the original 1975 series should have been.

Also Summer Wars is basically a carbon copy of Digimon Adventure: Bokura no War Game
