Think that's a 'dropped' from me, bruv. I dunno, it was doing alright until Elaine pulled a gun on Hank then all my hopes just fell, off a cliff, into the sea.

I kinda liked Hank at the start. A kind and compassionate leader who's a bit of a dork but ultimately ultimately worth following, except when it contradicts with his "if you go out of control I have no problem killing you" motto. Elaine was alright to until she pulled a fucking 180 and tried to kill everyone. I hate Cain, but I can't quite figure out how to verbalise why, because it has a lot to do with what I don't like about the show's premise.

I hope they find a better solution in the end that doesn't involve killing all your friends, and I hope Nancy turns out to be an interesting character. I really hope so, because I'm not gonna watch it.

Elaine killing everyone wasn't a 180, she literally was doing it to save her friends.
Plus, about your comment on Hanks' "I have no problem in killing you if you are out of control" motto, we don't know how much has passed since he became a Beast Hunter.

So I'm not attached to any characters yet, am I suppose to yet? it also feels like they've cut things out? have they cut things out? Because I feel like i'm suppose to feel upset but I'm not because I hardly know the characters, honestly I don't understand the sudden switch either/why everything happened this way. Will this be explained later?

Hmmm, that was not so great... it didn't hook me at all and i don't get why Hank is angry at Cain. Hank might have loved Elaine but she was going to do something awful and she tried to kill him. Cain was also wrong but i wouldn't be raging about what he did because he was protecting himself, his friend and his comrades.

Ah well, guess i'll give it the 3 episode trial and if it doesn't improve, i'll drop it

"She was trying to do something awful" Oh yeah, because killing your friends so they can rest in peace instead of becoming monsters is TOTALLY awful.
I really hope your comment about Hank and Cain is a joke. It is VERY clear that Cain is evil. And why WOULDN'T Hank be mad at Cain? Are you saying that you would be cool with someone you trusted killing the person you loved?

Literally the first fucking ep and the people on this thread are already making troll comments just to hate on the series.

I thought that was a great first episode. It did everything I expect a first episode to do: set the tone, give necessary background, and acquaint us with the characters. Throw in a twist to get us hooked, and you're golden in my book. Could it have been done better in a perfect world? Certainly, however, it's patently obvious that we don't live there and thus can't expect that.

It was two months. It said in the show he was in a coma for two months, and I'm presuming there wasn't much of a gap between him waking up and him fighting lizardman.
As for Elaine. She said she'd been trying to find a way to stop the madness from taking over, but she failed, and this is something she'd kept only between her and Cain. We never see her telling anyone else outside of Cain or Hank, so we can presume no one else knew. So, isn't it a bit extreme to jump immediately to killing everyone before they go mad instead of, like, telling them. Or finding more people to help find a better solution. If we knew more about Elaine, maybe I could buy it, but with how little we know, I'm sorry, all I see is bad characterisation.

This first episode is underwhelmingly average, I'll watch the next, but unless it improves on several aspects, it'll be a drop.

Nice episode. But the name choosing makes me wonder if the writer is trolling us:
patria - literally means homeland
henrietta- female name
Cain - the only proper name killer of Abel
Somnium - Sleep -ium
Renescastle - Rennes Castle

I this trolling or just bad name choice?

Not to mention Cain's lastname is...Madhouse
You know, the studio from which studio MAPPA originated from.

I wasn't really into the first half, but the second half was actually great. Some of it was predictable, infact a lot, but Hank is bad ass. This should be a good revenge story if it's done right because the idea of the beasts turning bad is pretty interesting. 5/10 first half and 7.5/10 second half so I guess 6/10.

I thoroughly enjoyed pretty much every second. Sure, it could've been better directed, but the concept is cool and some character designs/names made me giggle, dunno if laziness or on purpose.

Decent start.
One Piece episode 914 & 915 were a mistake.

That was awesome! We got right into the action and it was violent, ridiculous, and so good.

It was like X-Men on steroids fighting in the civil war. I don't care if it's nonsense, it's too entertaining to not watch. All of the incarnates are friendly with one another, they're very powerful but it comes at a price of symptoms of... something. The giant snake dude became possessed by his arte and killed people on his own side. That looks to be the fate of incarnates. Hank had a crush on Elaine, shit went down at the end of the episode. Why does the big boob woman look like she just walked off the set of a porno?

This was disappointing.

Half the episode was just a slideshow, what will the show look like in 8 more episodes?

And the storytelling pacing was so bad. They thre us into this huge battle, which was too short, then showed a lot of scenes celebrating and someone turning into a monster and dying and a motivational speech in like the first 15 minutes. No context, no reason to care about these people suffering or being happy.

Just the first episode and there's already people who are bitching about everything for the sake of bitching...

First impressions are important, it isn't that hard to notice how bad the pacing were and how it hurts its potential. If this was presented in 2-3 episodes it would have been way better than the sorry mess they did. Its not bitching for the sake of bitching, we have our reasons to think it wasn't a good start as you have your reasons to think it was, that doesn't mean we are wrong.

Who doesn't like a classic beast-man vs beast-man fight?

People are like "I don't see nothing special", "I feed disappointed". Oh well, don't blame the anime for your own expectations m8.

Plus, the last scene gave me chills. Wolverine to the hunt!

Can't say I liked the episode, but hey I know the rating will be hitting 6 soon. Poor anime!

Even if I liked the episode, it felt a bit rushed to me. It is highly understandable since they needed to present the war, the super soldiers and then show the after-war with the sort of treason & the new role of Hank.

It still caught my attention, the idea of becoming a supernatural beasts reminded me Terra Formars, particularly with the originality / diversity of creatures used as model. For example, there was in the first minutes a woman who gained some spider legs as well as abilities to draw some webs : that pleased me, considering the soldiers were not just bestial creatures based on strenght.

I'm curious to see how it will go, but for now they got my attention.

bloody roar meets fairy's gone or even killing bites for more recent references , this was quite violent but i'm glad the part of showcasing these gods as monster became the plot point ,while at the moment i seems like it's a revenge story about killing all your war buddies gone rogue ,i'm curious to see where it goes and not just a monster of a week seeing as though we hardly know any of em the attachment compared to hank will hardly be there.

no CGI was a plus will see if this becomes anything more than i what we've seen

This seems it might be enjoyable... hopefully better than Fairy Gone.
But I have mixed feelings. There were a lot of weird-ass and trashy moments. Obvious discount U.S. Civil War. The way the Incarnate squad just casually strolls to the front of a losing battlefield was weird af. The opening battle scene was at least really cool tho. The two random war montages of looked awful and were pointless. We get a blatant and awkward "Im the bad guy" evil laugh. MC powers up with white hair, because reasons.

Anyway, the story doesnt really start until ep2, so at least all of that was just done to speed along the intro. So Ill give it a fair try.

Yeah, i dont think Elaine is dead. They said she was "missing"

Great way to start a new season, until we found the issues or/and problems. Now is time to see if the show can carry on itself.
This is what i wanted to see in both Magical Girl Spec-OPS, OPM2, Shoumetsu Toshi, and little more in Fairy Gone: a great and beautifully done action scenes. This could possibly be one of the best anime of the genre of both this year and this season, until we found out the Viland Saga or other show with high potential(of this genre) in this season. Violent, brutal, impactfull, bloody and very well animated, this makes me smile and laught in a good way.
Unfortunatly, even this show having a high potential and some good points in both ideas and executions, it isn't flawless and perfect.
First of all, this felt like a mix of Killing Bites, Devil Man, Berserk, Gungrave with some taste of military genre in a good and bad ways. This work, beside the mix of others series, had a interesting and cool ideas and concept to work with it, turning this to be something interesting, however this depends in how to work well and this when KatsuKemo had problems in this first episode.
The beast soldiers that only use the beast form mostly to attack, but forget about the existence of any weapons, like some female MC who only uses rifle and didn't think about using knifes, sword or pistols. Result: They all lost control and become monsters, and also targets of the protagonists. Imagine the level of shock effect when the Mc companions become the real Beast after the war.
Well, this mc friends is really friendly and happy with his friends, aways carried him, he is or was from rich familly, also he help to form this group of monsters, what could go wrong? Oh no, he betrays him and his friends and also he is really a generic steriotyped villan. Wait, a friend of MC who betrays him and become a bad guy, where did i see this before? Not about this making me mad or something with he betraying or becoming genric steriotyped psycho villan, but the fact that he turning this instantly instead of trying to work and develop somenthing with his character, throwing away this character like that wasn't good. And i can't feel anything about this for not knowing and understanding very well the characters and their relationship, honestly, not only the fact about this been simillar to some Black Swordsman.
Anyway, it's really great in some ways and bad in other ways, i had still some high expectations about this show.

Soundtrack: Stellar
Animation: Below MAPPA's usual quality, but not bad. That first battle sequence was really good.
Plot: A rushed jumble of nonsense. Two musical montages in one episode, with one being a random slideshow? Just a bunch of predictable dialogue, with key scenes that are supposed to have emotional impact not really mattering because they spent all their time on montages rather than developing any characters. The scenes where they did introduce characters they introduced so many so rushed it felt like a whirlwind.

Characters: I just found myself constantly going "Who?" the whole episode to the point that it sounded like I was quoting Arrested Development when George Michael Jr. started dating Anne. Little was distinctive about them because everything was so rushed.

Also not one attempted joke during the relaxed scenes landed, it was just a barage of "haha, men like hot women." Thankfully, this isn't trying to be a comedy, but just a red flag for the way this is written.

Really weak first episode. Felt more like a mediocre Marvel movie than MAPPA's usual fair given it had no exposition or substantial character development, just montages and random action sequences. Too ambitious, like they tried to cram a season in one episode. This seems to be more a premise-establishing episode than one that is supposed to be part of a formal plot, so I'll give it a second chance next week. 3/10

I didn't say the whole anime is weak, I said "weak first episode." I'm still not passing judgement on the whole thing.

As a side note, you can actually tell quite a bit about a series from the first episode, but that's beside the point:

I'll agree the plot has some potential, that's why I started watching this series in the first place: because the premise is reasonably compelling. I'll also agree the last scene was better than the rest of the episode (although the interest I had was waning because everything else was so meh). But that doesn't mitigate the fact that the pacing and writing during the first fifteen minutes was really bad.

Maybe I just have unreasonably high expectations from MAPPA after Dororo and Banana Fish, their last two projects, both made my favorites list and BF even had even the same director as this for one of its stronger episodes, but still...

That digibro video you posted is bullshit.
FMA:B has a horrible rushed 1st episode that introduced too many characters (and non canon too the manga, all filler) yet people claim as a masterpiece 🙄

Yeah, he oversells the point when he says "there has never been one," and FMA:B (my fav series ever, for the record) is the first thing that comes to my mind as a strong counterexample, but it is true that there is a pretty reliablecorrelation between the first episode's quality and the series' overall quality in my experience and a lot of the things he points to are the things that are worth looking for.

Edit: Also, by the way, as he says near the end, the point is not that you can always tell a series' quality by the first episode, just that when a first episode is so terrible that it's jarring the rest of the series probably won't get much better. And even though the first episode of FMA:B was weak relative to the rest of the series, it was not atrocious to the point that I was almost completely turned off by it like I was with this.

The first five minutes were pathetic, nothing was understood. Transformations (ridiculous) from nothing and at the most (in)opportune moment of the battle...
I wonder, what need to send an entire armed troop if they already had the "Incarnate" who possess superhuman powers and who are capable of eliminating an entire army? Many deaths in vain so that then the battalion of Pokemons comes to eliminate them as if nothing xD

Another thing I found strange is the choice of names:
- Cain: What is this, the Bible?
- "Patria" ? Literally means "homeland" in Spanish lol
- Bancroft, Nancy Schaal: Bancroft by Anne Bancroft? Nancy + Shaal don't fit much, do they? Since Shaal is apparently a Jewish name ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schaal_(surname) ) and the above are Anglo-Saxon.
- Hank: Just hank
- Somnium: I already want to sleep

I don't know what to expect from this anime, but this first chapter was pretty loose, though not as much as Fairy Gone.

Gotta say did quite like this, somewhat rushed but I think I can guess why they did it like they did.

From what I know the whole during the war chunk was not in the manga (haven't read it) and i think they did that so we could see the whole brotherhood the incarnates felt with each other to, if not really cause us to feel for each soldier, at least see what Hank has gone through before he has to go around killing his comrades. And to see where his hatred of Cain came from (if that's a thing in this series). Action was good quality during the large scale battle, if kind of bland but definitely loved the explosion fight with the lizard, if that is how it goes for the season this is gonna be awesome. The still frames and crazy laugh were rather boring and what the heck respectively, but I was not expecting Elaine to shoot Hank and then Cain to betray her (though i should of with him having the name of the first murderer)

If you don't like reading long drawn out comments like i do, short version is a couple of blunders but a good deal of good with a couple of points to hook me.

Watched this on a whim with no expectations or knowledge of the source material. It's loud and violent and batshit crazy and I'm gonna watch all of it.

Gotta say did quite like this, somewhat rushed but I think I can guess why they did it like they did.

yes it is. the manga never mentioned the war at all, at least not explicitly. i think the only canon thing in this episode is the scene when Elaine called Hank in the last 5 minutes. instead, the backstory is delivered through occasional dream or flashback from Hank telling his story to the main girl Nancy, and the backstory is getting clearer on each every beast soldier they met and slain because each of them has their on story.

so it is weird that they shown us these absolute beast fighting, and then couple of jokes, tragedy, and slideshow later they won the war, and then Cain laughing.

i can’t blame them for saying this is bad, it is bad. MAPPA should’ve just put Nancy in the first episode and let Hank flashback draw the backstory, just like what manga do.

for the one that read it, it’s probably fine for them, but for anime watcher first impression, not so much i guess

The manga isn’t the greatest, but the way it begins was better than this... this was just mediocre to be honest. For whatever reason(s), they decided to have most of content of the 1st episode be anime-original... They should have just followed the way the actual manga started instead. It is what it is...

Sooo...first impressions: Fairy Gone 2.0 with plot and setting, hopefully it picks up pace.

The start with the "tragic" war, with beings called "Incarnates" as war weaponry human tools (Hank, Cain) with creator/doctor Elaine. However with the decent intro setting, which was different from manga (mostly anime-original), it felt half-hearted.

As per the case, MAPPA visuals less than usual but good for now, no 3D monster visuals as compared to Fairy Gone.

Plus with lots of information, pacing all over the place and forced drama that had mostly just shocked me, that's the only impact I have felt.

Looks like Cain Madhouse (as per Biblical context) is just the same context in name: a betrayer, the Devil "Incarnate" beast even. Get it?

Next episode, judging from the post-credits, the main girl from the manga comes into view. So by then we can get the full adaptation proper and this will hail the start of everything.
