Berserk for me as well, but if I had to mention something less obvious I'd say Alien 9. You have to get through layers of symbolism to be able to understand it (I'm dumb when it comes to symbolism so I don't think I could make it without this awesome analysis), it was hard to watch but it was worth it. The ending still haunts me.

Re:Zero was the darkest anime I ever watched. The tone was extremely serious throughout as you were forced to witness Subaru's numerous deaths and failings. That particular episode where he returned to the mansion and found everyone dead, truly chilling.

Let us also not forget Beezlebub, he was twisted... the way he murdered Rem was brutal and sickening.

It was the first dark anime I ever watched, and it put me off it for a while!

At least the plot is kinda "dark".

I'd have to say Higurashi. I would've said Berserk, but I didn't watch the original anime or the movies, and I'm not going to torture myself by watching the 2016 CGI version.

Damn that episode was rough, can't wait for next week.

As for darkest anime it would have to be something like madoka or corpse party (is gore dark?).

No the avatar cat is not my cat. It's just some random cat whose ambitions I can appreciate and relate too (GIF unrelated).

Yeah, I didn't like the cgi either but don't let that stop you from watching the original anime. It's a masterpiece nonetheless but the ending is pretty fucked up.

There's two- First would be Grave of the Fireflies, based on true events so you can't really get any darker than that lmao. It was suffocating with heartbreak and the helplessness you felt pangs me still. i didn't cry at the film like i do often, i was just numb.

Second would be Rurouni Kenshin: trust and betrayal. It's one of my favorites and always will be. The story is amazing but the best part is the nuances of human emotion and reaction portrayed physically through animation. The quick and long shots used perfectly, the bright red of blood, the loneliness that's always felt,,,killed me. And then in contrast with the brightness of the tv series is just crazy.

1.GOBLIN SLAYER (which I dropped after two episodes.
By seeing a cute character in poster I watched it without checking genre and shocked at its dark moments and the same goes for 2.akame ga kill which doesn't make sense to me as all MCs are killed like cockroaches one after another (except akame as described).
3.mirai nikki
(A crazy story with crazy characters and crazy ambition.)

And lastly the only anime in genre horror which I watched is another in which the characters die in every episode by unrealistic ways.(which I dropped after four eposide)

I don't want to talk about the old neon gensis sh*t which I couldn't understand a sh*t.

Damn, someone got here and said Darker Than Black before me
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

Texhnolyze. There are shows out there with over-the-top gore scenes, excessive cruelty and horrific narratives. However, these still appeal to our passions. Texhnolyze, on the other, is not granting the viewers any sympathy. You are sucked into a bleak world to experience the meaninglessness of the human condition and its absurdity in the face of a crude reality. And this experience will occur at a very, sometimes excruciatingly, slow pace.

Higurashi, NGE, Basilisk, Elfen Lied, Happy Sugar Life (wasn't expecting a fucked up story like this one at all), Madoka Magica, WIXOSS series (first 2 seasons), Shinsekai Yori.

But if i had to choose one, probably Higurashi.

Corpse party: tortured souls

Made in Abyss as one of the most recent. It wasn't some scary horror with a lot of blood or anything like that but an adventure 2 kids decided to undertake that seemed somehow lighthearted at first to me so things they had to deal with later and their fight for survival is probably what made it so dark.
I'm watching anime since 2012. I also play games, sometimes.

Don't bother me if you want to 'become friends' or things like that.
It's tiresome. I know you just want to collect some meaningless numbers.
Thought: How many people sparked H. Charlotta just for blue pot?

berserk is one of the most disturbing/mature fiction out there and the depth is on another level compare to many of the dark fantasy anime I've seen
while it intentionally focusing on a story with fantasy/adventure/war elements, it really blooms into something greater, something more diverse and sophisticated (as you see it starts to bring up philosophical topics and question morality, human nature, politics, religion, idealism etc)

Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Higurashi no Naku koro Ni and Jin-Roh were most effective with their darkness. Special mention goes to Princess Tutu which has a pretty disturbing story under a child friendly veneer.
