I do have a difficult time starting to watch an anime if I know there's going to be a sad ending. This is why it took me a while to start watching Kanon for example.

If you look at my Favorites; Tear-jerkers dominate them.

But I DO prefer happy endings or semi-happy endings. Tragedy is a hard genre to digest so I can respect people who stay away from it. I will feel like I'm missing out though if I swear off anything. Even when I have to say an untimely and very undeserved good-bye to a character, I'm still like "I'M HAPPY TO HAVE MET YOU".....and stuff. xD

"How do you handle sad anime?
Or do you refrain from watching them?"

Well i don't search if the anime i'll watch will have happy or sad ending, i'll just watch it.
Anyway, i really like anime with sad ending, why?, because sadness is part of life. To me, if an anime doesn't have a happy ending it makes me see life differently. It pushes me to become more social and enjoy every moment, even the most simple ones. That's few words from me!

Ehhh depends if the ending helps the story as a whole. Unlike Guilty Crown and Shitgatsu, Devilman Crybaby does a tremendous job of its “sad” ending due to the overarching theme it conveys of humanity.

I try to avoid them as much as possible however if I like the sound of the plot I would watch it anyway however I wouldn't get attached to anything, therefore when the sad ending occurs I'd feel less 'sad' than I would have originally.

I can watch them, and sometimes do; but I prefer happy endings.

I watch anime for fun, to bring joy to my life.
I want to be left with good feels when I'm done, not in despair.

I actually prefer those endings and absolutely love them. I mean it's just my personal hope that anime get sad, hopeless
and endings filled with despair.

Not to many of those, but at least we get the sad, but somewhat calm ending.

examples:

Clannad after story (1st END)
Chrono Crusade
Angel beats
Your lie in April
White album 2
Avenger
Jigoku Shoujo (all of them)
Elfen Lied
Basilisk
Hakuouki

Some are better than others.

Here is an excellent list of those that didn't earn it.

If misery porn is your thing, rock and roll. I just dislike telegraphed "you should cry now moments". It doesn't take much skill to engineer them.

Are you kidding right? Making a real emotional moment it's hard, lot of shows fail and end up as a joke. Having a happy ending were everything is perfect is the easiest and safest bet.

I like some of them, I never avoid them. If it has an ending is enough to make me happy. Bittersweet stories are good too.

Yes, though i watch them only on vacations, sometimes i can get so invested in an anime that i get PAD when it ends even if it had a happy ending.

So an anime i am so invested in and had a sad ending would affect my motivation to do things and in turn would affect my work and my studies, so i try to marathon sad or more likely to have sad ending anime as much as i can during vocations.

My starting animes after dragon Ball Z we're in this order : Your lie in April, plastic memories, angel beats, clannad , anohana, golden time etc . As you can see I started with sad anime. I didn't know that they had sad endings. But instead of looking at the sad side I saw at the brigter side . But I couldn't deal with clannad after story . I was tired of sad endings and shifted to Golden time . Even today I have kept clannad after story on hold because I know it has a sad ending and I am just not ready for it. But the day I think I'm ready I will see it .

We can deal with sad endings easily if we look at their brighter side . Happy endings are the best because they make us the most comfortable . But in life everything isn't always good nd we get sad sometimes. So therefore I think we should embrace those animes and get used to sorrow because sometime in life everyone has to deal with it . At last I know some of you may not agree with me but it's fine because we all are different .

I would watch if it is properly executed to the point of seeing beauty in it. Reasoning.

The same thing is applyed to a good ending, it needs to be worthy to everything it was presented to us, during the course of the trip.

If it is sad, but had reasoning, i would be depressed if hit me on a personal level, but at the same time, feeling fullfilled because at least, respected the viewer in his time spent on the anime.

- i dont ever watch shigatsu, but i had plan to watch it... i'll check is this anime had sad ending like they said.
- i dont watch ever watch angel beats. i just watch some.. uhhhhh.. what was is it? conspiracy? complication? ahhh right compilation..
i've watch some compilation video about this anime like there is no another anime to be compilated... after watch a ton of compilation about how funny angel beats was... there is compilation how kanade and yui dies in the end... so i discouraged to watch this anime... it just like drink a fine taste of wine but in the end you'll get drunk and fall.
- i've already watch some anime that got sad ending.. and it sucks. Even how good the plot is, if the end no one survive (everybody dies), then screw that anime. Big regret to watch it.

Preferably I'd like the ending to always be happy or at the very least bitter sweet but I'm certainly not opposed to a sad ending if it's written well (not just because the creator is too lazy to tie all the story's lose ends) heck I'd love for an anime to make me cry It's extremely rare I find a show or book or whatever that can do that for me (although I would prefer happy tears but heck I'll take what I can get).

I actually respect anime with gutsy endings, that don't hesitate to kill characters or to bring an unpleasant outcome.

Of course, I will prefer a bittersweet ending such as the one in Code Geass (which in my opinion is probably the most epic and emotional ending in anime) than an outright downer ending.

The ending in Your Lie in April was a roundhouse kick to my feels, but I was also in awe over how boldly they pulled this off. Not many scriptwriters dare to add such endings, often trying to cater to the needs of fans that don't want their favourite characters to die. By the way, check out Grave of Fireflies; after this anime and its downright CRUEL plot, anything will seem like a happy adventure to you!

I think the closest I've come to reacting to an anime with a sad ending was a sigh. It wasn't because it stirred up feelings of sadness or a true emotional reaction. I think the sigh came from the fact that the way the show ended was not the way I had envisioned it, but at the 11th hour the director/writer pulled a major plot twist. While I'm usually pretty good at figuring out how an anime will end, that time I was totally wrong all because of the last episode. So I'd say yeah I can watch an anime if it might have a sad ending, but it won't effect me on an emotional level because it's primarily a television program and I don't invest myself deeply in the characters or story or the world/setting.

For starters, I can't even know if the show has a sad ending because I don't want to have it spoiled before I watch it. Finished Shigatsu yesterday. Well, i'm still sad as F.

I've watched so many anime with sad and depressing themes and endings, that my middle name should be Crybaby. Cause I've shed countless tears.
For a stoic person like me who doesn't show many emotions on his face, crying alone watching anime is the most emotional I get. So yeah I really enjoy watching sad anime.

Granted, most of the anime I've watched usually had a happy-go-lucky ending.

The only anime I've watched so far with a sad ending was Air. Boy did I cry....hard. :c

I dunno if I'm prepared for another sad ending.

Yer no issues here. Some of my favourites are sad endings.

One of my friends really hates them though, so much so that she gave me all the DVD's from her collection that were of shows with sad endings.

Well, Chrono Crusade has a depressing end, and it's one of my all-time favorite anime endings, so...
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

Why should I avoid an anime because it's emotional? I don't get it.
If the animes ending makes me cry that just proves that the anime has succeeded in making the watcher feel more attached to the series or characters. In my eyes making me cry at the ending is better than not.
