now we all know anime is full of shallow, pandering fan service shows. it even has it's own genre (ecchi). this season alone we have high school dxd, comic girls, the horse girl show, cutie honey reboot, beatless, tachibanakan triangle, alice or alice, and even steins gate to a degree.

now i just finished texhnolyze and whew, what a show. it made me really think (not just because its confusing sometimes xD) sbout the darkness of humanity and how empty life can be... abd it got me to thinking... what shows from this year are deep? by deep i mean they really make you think about philosophy and things like that. the only one i can think of darling in the franxx which is a really layered exploration of sexual agency and awakening. it also questions things we take for granted like memory, authority, and groupthink.

so my question is do you prefer anime with deep meaning like darling in the franxx, or do you like anime like comic girls where you can just "turn your brain off"? also, what happened to all the deep anime? it seems they are producing less and less of it...

I like watching both types of anime....in an equal proportions.
THERE EXIST IN THIS WORLD SOMETHING NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN
IT'S GENTLE SO VERY SWEET
THE GLIMPSES IS ALL IT TAKES TO MAKE A PERSON CRAVE IT
THAT'S WHY IT'S NEVER BEEN SEEN
THAT'S WHY THE WORLD HAS KEPT HIDDEN
MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN
BUT ONE DAY, IT WILL BE FOUND

BY THE PERSON WHO IS MEANT TO FIND IT. BECAUSE THAT'S HOW IT WORKS.

FranXX having deep meaning...?

I prefer deep anime with complex and meaningful themes and messages, as well as the executed of proper symbolism and development of the characters. Texh was a fantastic anime that fell under that category for me. Glad someone else appreciates it. Also same could be said for many of the titles on my favorites.

i prefer easygoing series with subtle complexity than "look at me, i am soo symbolic, i am soo deap" kind of anime...

I derive enjoyment from both the deep and shallow ends of anime. Something is not automatically better because it's complicated and not automatically worse because it's simple.

I don't think Darling in the Franxx is deep it may have sexual themes but I wouldn't classify it as deep also Legend of the galactic heroes,NGE,Serial Experiments Lain and of course Texhnolyze are the shows I would classify as deep and the things about sexual agency and awakening that stuff is covered in pretty much any action, magic, harem, school show.

Deep anime is synonymous to elitist anime so you just pretty much need to google what elitist anime are. I'm pretty sure, LoGH will still stand the flow of meme and be the one, elitist anime of all-time, according to various sources.

you wot mate? FLCL 2 is right around the corner.

so is toaru majustu no index season 3

to be deep you don't have to be "EVERYTHING IS PAIN *Slit wrists.*most the time where a show does dark to be dark it comes off as fake deep. *cough* Magical Girl Site *cough* "

I found that this season Shiyan Pin Jiating seems to have promise with addressing some social issues without being Grim dark.

there's also Full metal panic.

@Kuma

some symbolism is fine just as long as it doesn't go full darkness for the sake of darkness.

nanoha has some symbolism, but it doesn't drown us in it.

dragon maid managed to address some issues with society without going dark emo mode.

that's what i mean tho... symbolysm just for the sake of symbolism, not actually giving important massage with important purpose that better showed implicitly...

and talking about dragon maid, anime actually tooned down lot of dragon nihilism, skeptism, and apathism (and yes, sometimes in emo way, but not in bad way, especially fafnir, iruru, lucoa, emma, and recently Kanna)... it's just how dragon moralities works in different way than human... how our moralities affecting dragon and how human who interacted with dragon also slowly understanding dragon reasoning... it make us questioned again what moralism whcih already become our common sense... (the manga also has more sexual fanservice BTW)...

No, I would appreciate anime that offers depth, but I also appreciate anime that are not doing so. Anime exist for a lot of reasons. A lot of anime would be better-off with little artistic attempt. And I don't agree that "turn your brain off" is the right solution, the best way is to use your brain to think about what you are looking for/focusing on and what you are watching. If you and the anime come at cross-purpose, it would not result in a satisfactory experience.

Because fans for deep anime are not generous with their money, so people stop making anime for them.

I can go for both as long as I know what I'm getting myself into. It all really depends on my mood. Even anime that are centered around stupidity and erotica can be good when executed properly.

But yeah, I usually prefer deep anime as long as I can see it's not trying too hard to come off as intellectual and sophisticated.

I flat-out don't give series without a deeper theme more than an 8 out of 10. When the character, struggles and ideas within an anime aren't grounded in something bigger, they're usually just not very interesting.

I don't know, the darkness of humanity was a thing that hit me when I was 16. Now I realized that humanity is a lot more complex than that, so these themes depicting humanity as dark really feel way too naive to me.

Texhnolyze didn't bring any new themes to me, therefore it was anything but deep according to me. Really disappointing, I should have watched it at the age of 15.

I can enjoy pure joyride anime like Hellsing Ultimate and more thought provoking anime equally, but the best anime do a good job of balancing entertainment value and deeper meaning. Shows like Hunter x Hunter, Fate Zero and (the manga) Vinland Saga are all excellent examples of this. Calling a show "elitist" or "pretentious" because it's difficult to understand or focuses on other facets of storytelling than entertainment is silly. I think everyone should watch these sorts of shows because they challenge the viewer to think differently and promote openmindedness. I'm also surprised Monster hasn't been mentioned for it's intricate views on the human condition. It's ambiguity in regards to whether Tenma or Johan's views are "correct" makes it a masterpiece. IMO, it's always best if a series can focus on all sides of a topic without taking a clear stance. I think the best currently airing "deep" series is Steins Gate 0 btw.

Well if by 'this year' you mean 'last season' then the selection is obviously pretty limited.

There's shows like Sora Yori and Violet Evergarden and Koi wa Ameagari no You ni that have depth to them but more regarding the personal/emotional/psychological exploration of the characters and less in an existentialist, philosophical kind of way like Texhnolyze. Don't really see any comparable show from last season tbh.

Shows that are similar to Texhnolyze are pretty rare I'd say so if you're looking for more like it you best start with the 'standard' recs a la Ergo Proxy, Casshern Sins, SEL, Ghost in the Shell, Shinsekai Yori, Dennou Coil, Rakugo, 3-gatsu and maybe Wolf's Rain and Psycho-Pass (even if the latter is trash in my personal opinion).

There's lesser known titles too, especially some movies, but I'd recommend watching the 'big' ones for now if you want more stuff with a similar appeal to Texhnolyze.
I probably regret this post by now.
