Okay. That makes sense.
But I would like to know more about your opinion.
What is YOUR ideal ecchi harem?

Mine is:

-Tall girls
-Big boobs
-No abusive tsunderes
-Ultimate femdom (including s&m and strap on)
-Actual good comedy
-Legit character development
-Charismatic personalities

Uh idk, I don't give a single shit about what the females look like and the only example of a harem/ecchi I have enjoyed was Isekai wa Smartphone. It was so lowest common denominator that every scene was hilarious - whether that's intentional is not up to me to decide but I found it genuinely very funny. So all I can say as of right now is that it can make me laugh, I plan to watch High School DxD soon, friends of mine say it's good.

Have all the characters be likable in terms of personality, and have the show offer more than just the fanservice aspect.

Tenchi Muyo accomplished this. Kill la Kill did it, too.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

A plot that is interesting

Have the characters have backstory and depth to their personalities, not just the token tsundere member of the harem and the kuudere member, etc

Not have every girl have massive tits, just one or two at max. If they all had massive tits then there's nothing to compare them to and it just looks stupidly unrealistic

I liked Grisaia

I don't hate ecchi Anime, where I know that it's just a fun tit comedy.

What I hate, is when they throw ecchi into an Anime that's supposed to be serious.

they'd need to probably off the top of my head:
have good characters (which aren't just tropes and things) as well as good designs
have a decent story
chill out a little on the fanservice and casual sexual harassment
be over 18 if they're going to be put in rly sexual situations
if an ecchi can do that sign me up lmao

How fan servicey would you prefer an ecchi series to be? Very light, or heavy like
Highschool DxD?

I've been meaning to watch KonoSuba to see if it passes the test. Hearsay says yes, but hearsay is hearsay.

* An actual story that makes you think
* Many different characters and types
* No tsundere is a big plus.

OT: Ecchi and harem can always be done right, visual novels I've played since I just have an attraction to harem are mostly harems, with to say the least, better than a majority I've watched. Can always be a possiblity.

Highschool DxD will be perfect for you. The MC relishes in the girls fighting over him, but he doesn't just screw them. He actually does end up with one of them. And (so far in the anime at least, dunno about light novel) there are NO tsunderes.

I'm kind of dissapointed by how similar everyone's' responses are.

High production quality, artistic screenplay, and no ugly men. If it's gonna be ecchi, it better be some goddamn high detail, high framerate, beautiful ecchi and have no ugly guys (or ugly girls; beautiful or cute guys obviously OK), or fake plot. Most ecchi is just some shitty-ass slideshows, and even includes shit that isn't ecchi, and try add a shallow garbage plot. Nobody watches ecchi for the fking plot, so don't even pretend. I mean having a plot is fine, as long as they don't waste time a shitty plot, or if the plot is actually decent.

So then would your ideal ecchi be a film by Ufotable with little to no plot?
I mean, they have adapted Fate/Stay Night, whose source material contains sex scenes...

@Mario_Isla

Am I the only one who didn't find Prison School particularly arousing? The only ecchi scenes I remember was the whip girls' sweating (which I don't find hot). Not helping, was that literally all the girls (aside from MC's love interest) were unlikeable as f*ck.

1. Have an actually good plot and engaging, interesting story, as opposed to a generic one that's an afterthought and shoehorned in just to say "Hey look! it's not all about boobies and panties, promise!"
Good examples of anime that do this are Shokugeki no Souma for ecchi and Steins;Gate for harem(Ok it's not lebeled as harem but it's the closest example i have, considering that almost the entire cast is comprised of females except for the MC: Okabe and the fat dude)

2. Have likeable characters who are not just shallow cardboard cutouts and actually have a personality that makes them endearing to the viewer and not just there for eye candy and fanservice.

3. The MC to NOT be a huge fucking pervert that only has sex on the brain and constantly wants to do perverted things with the girls and treats them like disposable toys!

4. The Ecchi is integrated in a creative way that doesn't distract from the story, a good example would be Shokugeki no Souma again. A bad example of this would be Tasogare Otome x Amnesia, who, i still don't know why it's not tagged as ecchi, when it quite clearly is one, i mean, Yuuko flashes her boobs and naked body a LOT smh! Not that the story is any better, see point 1.

5. No overpowered MC or MC becoming overpowered, i prefer a flawed and more relatable human being and not a "God" who single handedly kills 1000 demons with a single finger or some such nonsense.

6. Absolutely no incest, lolicon and weird fetishes!!!

7. No shoujo-ai or Yuri things between the girls.

8. No abusive and/or violent tsunderes!!! If they are like Kurisu in Steins;Gate or Ririchiyo in Inu X Boku SS, i don't have a problem with them.

9. No psychopathic yanderes!

10. No gore.

I think that's about it.

If author doesn't want it then break up properly, don't do it like nisekoi way.

For an Ecchi... I am not sure.

This exactally. I see no reason that a harem should be held to different standards than any other show. Good characters and engaging story are most important. Echi is good and all, and I am guilty of watching some shows just for mindless fan service, but that shouldn’t be all a show has to offer.

When it comes to a harem, if it's anything like Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry (Not too much Ecchi) where the main MC actually CHOOSES a girl (or female MC actually choose a guy), then I'd be okay with. As long as the best girl/guy wins. (One of the reasons why I don't want to watch Hakuoki) But I just don't really like Ecchi in general. A bit is fine, too much is just too much for me.

So agree with these points! But the overpowered one, I'm fine with them being overpowered AS LONG as they have actual flaws. In my opinion, Ikki from Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry is an example of a not-too overpowered MC. He actually has flaws.

@Mikura39

I agree with everything, except #9: I love yanderes.
I would prefer the MC to almost be identical to a normal human being, but still do badass shit, like Kaiji (Ultimate Survivor Kaiji): an MC who uses his brain, comes up with crazy-plans, but not to a point where he seems insanely smart: an avante garde thinker. Because THAT is MY power fantasy: an underdog whom everybody ignores, until he shows he's a bigger pain in their ass then they were in their mothers' stomachs.

@velvetPhos

Why shouldn't an ecchi strive to be more? Action is expected to be more than just fight scenes.

1- Be over the top and never, never, pretend to be a serious story. That's the reason why most ecchi are just boring to me, it's just a really bad story with some boobs on-screen to keep you from stop watching. The best way to make a ecchi series, I believe, is to be dumb in the most dynamic way possible, but also to be sure that the existence of the ecchi scenes is justifiable.

2-Have good character designs. Because shitty art can't really be "ecchi". A good variety of good-looking characters would be essential. Also, never put woman with those unnaturaly huge tits. There's a point where it is just too big to be attractive and becomes just weird. Also, please put effort on both males and females.

3- Have good personalities and dynamics. Having a likeable cast with different a quirks make for good interaction and more unique ecchi scenes that can be very interesting. And assuming that it is going to have romance, make the characters have personalities that attract each other, so it won't feel forced. I never really self-insert so the bland MC is always a annoyance. If it's going to be harem, then I wish the author good luck on making 3 or more girls to fall in love with MC in a way that makes sense. Harem ending or Best Girl Wins would also be necessary.

I think that "A boy is transported to a really random and over the top dating sim, and the only way to get out is to make the harem ending" would make for a really good ecchi series. Even so if the dating sim is based on School Days, when MC can get pretty fucked up endings, die horribly, and then reset to try again. If all the characters were likeable (making the girls based on vn tropes WOULD make for good jokes, but still making them unique in some way) it could be perfect.

Are you my clone?
Because this is my exact problem with romantic relationships in anime: charcaters' personalities are too incompatible.

If Highschool DxD is fanservice heavy, then ecchi/harem made to titillate people should be much, much, much lewder and mature about it than DxD. Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid did it nicely.

If you're just talking about fan-service/nudity and not shows wich aim at titillationg people, some of them are good already (or very good), and the ecchi tag on MAL is inconsistent af.
