This topic has probably been done to death, but I still am curious about your preference. I personally prefer shoujo-ai because I'm gay. I really dislike most shounen-ai's. What about you?

Shoujo-ai. Most shounen-ai anime are just blegh to me. Though, there are a few exceptions.

I like straight romances (excluding shoujo rom-coms) and shounen-ai equally, I wouldn't say I dislike shoujo-ai but I generally avoid it. Pretty much something like this: straight (non shoujo)=shounen ai>shoujo rom-coms≥shoujo-ai

Hm...in anime i don't rly care about the gender as long as the relationship is interesting. But some Yaois are way too much for me. In real life i do prefer girl x girl :p
I mostly read/watch straight manga/anime tho.

Basically you're asking which one is preferable: Yuri, Yaoi or straight?

It all depends in the user fam, without going too deep we can always assume that female = yaoi/straight

male = yuri/straight

I like anything. I'm more interested in how strong the relationship between the characters is than what gender they are.

Shoujo-ai. Straight is good too. Shounen-ai is okay, but don't expect me to like it, I'm here for the girls.
Because I am a heterosexual male.

Straight. I find homosexuality to be disgusting and a great sin. I hate Shojou ai the most especially when a lesbian tries to steal the straight MC. Ruins shows.

Most probably straight but any cute, sweet and PURE romance is always welcomed otherwise I'm not a big fan of the genre itself.

I'm still not sure about how things get classified into shoujo-ai and yuri or shounen-ai and yaoi. At first I just thought that more graphic content would go under yuri or yaoi (which I want to stay away from at all costs!) and lighter fluff would go under shounen-ai or shoujo-ai but not having much experience in the genres I don't know whether I just stumbled on some outliers or I had the wrong idea about them to begin with. I had read the manga Pieta which had a yuri tag but nothing really happened in it (luckily!) while there was Junjou Romantica which only had a shounen-ai tag but it was so disgusting I decided to drop it in like 5 mins. Right now I basically have no opinion about shoujo-ai but since I hated everything (except Uraboku) in the shounen-ai genre plus how loud and annoying fujos usually are and how I can never like those disgusting jerks called "semes" I'll most probably stay away from that.

Even where straight is concerned, I hate series where the guy forcibly keeps on kissing the girl and she just ends up falling for him or even the other way around, anything onscreen that goes beyond kisses is definitely an immediate drop for me.

I'm down for all of it. Hoping to get more quality Shonen-ai and Shoujou-ai in the future. The quality of these shows at the moment tends to be lower in terms of writing, since the industry is currently seeing it as a less picky niche (I'm looking at you fujoshis...)

Feel like we've got way too many straight romances proportionately, but that's only to be expected when the vast majority of the world is cis-straight.

I have yet to find an anime where the main couple was gay that I actually enjoyed. With that said I dislike most straight romances in anime as well. Forced couples with no chemistry is an all too common problem in this medium. Shoujo ai and Shounen ai have the additional detriment of consistently having a main character that was straight their entire lives right up until they met the romance interest of the series.

Your initial impression what those genre should contain is right. Problem is these two genre and the whole classification based on the sexual content is a purely western invention. And the usage is usually fervently rejected within the actual fanbases themself.

Most go by the japanese approach: If it's girlXgirl it's yuri - if it's boyXboy it's yaoi. For everything besides that the title usually has more than one genre attached to it (like hentai, drama, romance, etc.). Which makes sense because for staight stuff there is no such distinction.

So you have to see if the site you use actually recognizes shoujo ai / shounen ai as official genre. And then it depends where the person responisble for tagging the title draws the line regarding the sexual content.

@Maou_heika

MAL isn't very reliable.

Baka-updates is quite austere, but it's more reliable, genre-wise. Plus there is tags, and thus it is more easy to understand the content of a manga.

For yuri content more specifically, you can go read them on Dynasty Scans, they host most yuri manga out there, and they use tags too, notably the "NSFW" one which indicate if there is sexual content.

Honestly, Shoujo-ai has better art than shounen-ai, but straight appeals to me more because I'm straight... for the most part. But sometimes the art is worse than shoujo-ai. And then you have the rare cases of shounen-ai with good art and story like Acid Town.
So, Straight > Shoujo-ai > Shounen-ai.

Depends on the characters and their dynamic.

I like straight and shounen-ai. I'm open to shoujo-ai if it featured in anime I'm watching.

Straight » Like it
Shounen-ai » Constantly looking for it
Shoujo-ai » Don't mind it

EDIT:
If we're talking about anime genre, then the answer is none of them. I'm not into romance anime, straight or gay.
I only read romance fanfictions and doujinshis

Straight, heterosexual romance is my preference. The the other kinds don't really interest me unless they're primarily some other genre and not what the whole show is about. I've seen a few examples of both that weren't too bad.

I'm straight, but 'm OK with all of these, as long as the love story touches my heart.
Though I don't really watch much of shounen-ai and shoujo-ai proper in their classic understanding (some of their tropes are too sweet-sugary to me), I love shipping guys and girls whose relationship is allllllllmost there (think of almost any sports anime - they're not kissing, but we know they're gay af for each other).

Shoujo-Ai, because it features such risqué and lewd features like...holding hands.

I don't mind straight stuff, and I don't mind shounen-ai. I just don't actively seek those two out, compared to Shoujo-Ai.
