I've seen a lot of anime series, and to me, it seems like older anime has more pantyshots than newer anime. I know that I've requested a lot for anime with a lot of pantyshots, but only a few of them were newer anime, and even then, I can only think of a few of modern anime that has pantyshots. But I can think of 20 old anime off the top of my head that have pantyshots. And not just a few, but a LOT of them! And there's probably a whole lot more that I don't know about. So why were they more common then than now?

People change and their liking's change.

I don't know much but I heard that Japan had a pretty strict pornography law back in the 90s unlike in the present. So to satisfy the young adults with their fantasies, they might have went a bit ahead with fanservice.

Well, fanservice is something which has been evolving with the animes and its community. Instead of bouncing boobs and cleavages, we now have bouncing boobs and almost complete view of the breasts with just a thin while line to censor the nipples. Great job, Japan.

Modern ecchi is just better than old shows which are like "dude pantsu lmao"

Contemporary series prefer to offer an intelectually engaging plot and relevant social commentary like No Game No Life, Shimoneta and MonMusu, and should be enjoyed with dick in one hand, and a glass of chardonay in the other.

Well, in a sense, its more like this.

According to my (Japanese) Dad, he said that seeing a pantyshot in public was a privilege, or like a blessing. You wouldn't say anything or be called out. So basically, during the '80s or '90s it was a thing. Now, its 2017 and its shit.

Panty shots are the weak sauce of the past. Modern day have shows have taken it up notches. Seeing panties in anime is like saying hello.

The only real pantyshot anime I can think of in the modern days is Rosario + Vampire. Too bad it doesn't do it right IMO.

Oh and speaking of fanservice, Gainax were also the ones responsible in promoting fanservice to the otakus in the 90s. And honestly, they even did that better than most of the modern animation studios.

Well, back then they were actually subtle about it. Nowadays they have it take up 60% or more of the screen to make sure those BDs are selling.

I'd say Gainaxing is more of a modern thing :P

Jesus Christ, Najica Blitz Tactics is HOW old now? That's, like, Pantyshot: The Animation, right there.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

Because the new modern anime focuses on Breasts and at least one or two shower scenes or something erotic between the lines....

Well first is the times. In the old days seeing a pantyshot was a major nosebleed. Now with the internet and gazilion of porn in our hands a pantyshot is so mild so shows that try to be sexual go a lot further than a pantyshot or even ignore pantyshot.

On the other hand critical voices let other shows trying to be more careful with their fanservice if they are not a sexy show.

Lastly pantyshot got overused so no one gets over excited about it now including the anime creators that may feel it even became to cliché at times and try to put more variety.

Saying all that you can still see plenty of pantyshots in anime.

Anime has gone more mainstream, and mainstream audiences generally take offense at even the slightest pantsu shot. But if pantsu is what you want, you still have more than enough options: Monogatari Series, Grisaia no Kajitsu, Juuden-chan, Highschool of the Dead, Ladies versus Butlers, Prison School, Shinmai Maou no Testament, To Love-Ru, just to name a few.

They're pretty common in both times. Now, instead of onsen and beach episodes, it's pool episodes and random "pervert perception" beat downs.

If I had to guess I'd have to say panty shots aren't enough for modern ecchi audiences anymore. The demand is more towards more dynamic and just generally 'stronger' ecchi scenes and not just having some suggestive camera angles. You can't sustain an ecchi audience on panty shots alone anymore.
I probably regret this post by now.

Back in the olden days we only had pantyshots in anime and we was better for it.

Now the youngsters need constant boob flashes to get hard.

My first thoughts when I read this:
- "This guy must have loved Panty shots the Animation." Weirdly, he gave it only a 5/10.
- "He should watch Love Exposure (at least the relevant part)."

Somewhat different idea of what fanservice is. For example, shows in the 70s and early 80s often "showed off" panties of prepubescent characters while doing handstands, jumping, dancing and the like, but you could tell that the animators didn't have the intention of doing that as a visual stimulus, neither did the people expect them to do that. Panda Kopanda had maybe 50 pantyshots over the course of two movies, and it was made by the same people that founded Studio Ghibli afterwards, aimed at children primarily.

This is not me saying that those shows didn't offer any sort of fanservice or that they were in some way more morally correct, but that the bar for fanservice has been raised over time with the changing trends. It's kind of like comparing this to something like this. People didn't exactly expect kids to be showing off this much skin back in the day™, while it's common to expect that today depending on the show. Different expectations, the industry complies.

Clearly old anime is for perverts and losers, while modern anime is for sophisticated and romantically successful people.

This is like asking why does modern anime focus on giant jiggling boobs of the like that should result in shear back pain.

I reckon they were at their most prevalent in the early 00s. Just look at titles like Ikkitousen and Tenjou Tenge.

Tenjou Tenge did have quite a few, but not as much as I had hoped, sadly, nor as much as some older series I've seen.

Today, the fanservice demans from the fans might have been turned up to eleven.
Back then, it was as abundant as it was subtle. Today, you might not found such thing as frequent as you did in the past.

Then again, you're just like one of my friend, who happens to be a pantyshot lover and kept reacting whenever seeing one ;)
It's time to play the Game folks!

Because times change.

And more modern anime focus on the glory that is breasts rather then totally covered vaginas.

Contrast that with a show like Magi where Morgiana possesses a "magic skirt" that reveals nothing even when she flips upside down in the air. Instead the fanservice consists of watching Aladdin smoosh his face between the bosoms of well-endowed older women, or Sinbad appearing with just a fig leaf over his privates.
