Finally a thread that I am actually okay with (tho I doubt the mods are)
OT: I don't know I suppose it works just as in the west as if mainly dvd sales

Edit: as for merchandise, I don't know but I just can't imagine a boku no pico cup, maybe body pillow but that would be it I guess

No they're only sold as OVAs. Can't air porn on national TV

And well let's just say there's a reason hentai doesn't have the best animation quality and stuff; they're generally pretty low budget productions exactly because there is much less money to be made from it since they can't reach out to a very big audience, nor is there as much opportunity for merchandising stuff like figures etcetera

Hentai doesn't really have a budget so all of them are low quality; I suppose the DVD's/footage cost quite a bit, but people buy it. It's not a lucrative business.

You can easily see that all the hentai titles on MAL are OVAs (maybe ONAs in some case). They do not air on TV.

that means that they were initally released as ova.. but there is still the possibility that some porn channel aired hentai after release (similar to how toomani aired flcl?)

I guess you're right. But I don't know whether that actually happens in Japan or not.

You know how sometimes really ecchi anime are censored when they air on TV and then the uncensored versions are sold on DVD? Hentai would basically have to be 4Kids versions to air on TV, which takes the point out of them being hentai. Out of the 1,100 hentai on MAL:
2 are ONAs
19 are Specials
8 are Movies
The rest are OVAs

I think they rely on DVD sales. I doubt they make too much money, which is why they're usually low quality and the voice actors get paid by the word (moans can probably be used several times, so they could easily be getting ripped off).

They're sold as eroge's in 18+ sections in Japan's shops. They're mostly OVA's and ONA's but there are the random few that get more than 10 episodes. For the amount of hentai out there and the amount of young people being exposed to sexually orientated images (especially in Japan), hentai's a clearly dying out (unfortunately). I don't watch hentai regularly (just when I need to, you know).

Highly doubtful, though there may be some Japanese cable/satellite subscription channel for porn that could air them if it existed.

They make their money off video sales/rentals, discs that are usually kept in their own adults-only section out of plain sight. They don't make all that much money and it's no surprise that it's rare for any of them to make it past 1 or 2 episodes...the longest one I've seen is Stringendo at 12 episodes and a couple of spinoffs (and I wish it was longer...).

DVD sales and rentals. Also, since many hentai are adaptations of Manga and Visual Novels, the hentai videos are probably used to advertise their Manga and games as well, so that may also add to the profit...

those entries are pretty interesting

- all but one of those specials are dvd specials, which are pretty much ova in all but MAL category

- the exception is the oldest one, "O-parts: Oman", which is pretty dubious and most likely mistagged (the director of that has only 3 entries, one of which is evangelion lol); according to anidb it's an ova ripped from VHS, so i guess it's possible it could've been a special for some unrelated thing, but there is little data on that

- 3 of the movies are part of the Animerama project started by Osamu Tezuka the man himself

- other than the theatrical release of Urotsukidouji and Blue Seagull, all movies are pretty much older than ova industry (oldest ova are some very dubious stuff)

- Blue Seagull, the newest "hentai" movie (1994) is a korean movie with 4.64 rating which probably just had an explicit sex scene (because of laxer korean laws maybe?) since it doesn't look very hentai-ish otherwise

- both of the onas are yaoi and could probably give boku no pico a run for its money

Since everyone is claiming that Hentai do not airs on TV, well if you check Boku no Pico MAL page it says Aired: Sep 7, 2006
Where did MAL got that information? and how accurate it is? and since they do not airs on TV, how do they got promoted? I mean do people go to adult stores and pick randomly? Don't they also have PV or some kind of CM?

@sido "Aired" just means "released". It doesn't have to be "on the air", it just has to be published in some way. ReLIFE is a TV series but the "air" date is the day it was released an an ONA since that happened first.

^that's just how the MAL profile pages are created

wikipedia uses the better word for ovas, "Released"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boku_no_Pico

because that's what ovas do.. get released

as for promotion, that's quite the mystery... presumably tha internet + specalist stores yeah `-`

I think I recall hearing Koikishi Purely☆Kiss aired on AT-X as well, with the sex scenes cut out.

NO they don't. I would assume it'd be in their best interest to have a channel for subscribers only with pay per view, but I doubt they have that in japan or wherever. A lot of hentai is based off visual novels/erotic manga, so people who were fans of those usually would buy the BD of the hentai that came out when It comes out. They're probably not making heaps on the lesser stuff but I'm sure they're making a living doing it.

I've seen hentai on TV many years ago here in Spain, but they were banned after some time.
I think that this happened because they don't approve of lolis.
They were airing them after 00:00 though.

Highly doubt. Atleast here in the states cause I don't know how Japan or other countries operates with that stuff. They basically have to pull what 4kids does to even allow it on tv. Besides a majority are OVA so they most likely rely on DVD sales most likely

Some hentai do get merchandising and figures though. I've seen figures from Bible Black and from Tony Taka hentai titles (but every character designed by Tony Taka seems to be getting a figure release). I'm sure there are some others, but it must still be quite uncommon. Most 18+ figures are original characters, there isn't even an Oni-Chichi figure that i know of.

Hentai have aired on TV outside of Japan. A hentai called Yaruki Manman aired on the Playboy Channel in 1991.

A few months ago I was scrolling through the "Animation" category on my TV guide and found one title entitled "Award Winning Anime". I was expecting maybe a compilation of short films, but what I got was hentai. I think it was like on Penthouse/Hustler.

Kill la Kill is pretty much porn and they aired it in the states, So I figure they can air literally anything in japan.

To the guys who say Hentai isn't "lucrative". You're wrong. It has a lower budget yes because it has a smaller audience, But it's not regular anime, so if you stop comparing it to regular anime, it's a fine business in it's own right. If it didn't make money nobody would make it.
I don't care.
