Unfortunately, the thread has been deleted because it appeared to be "flaming". The debate might have been a bit heated, but I wouldn't see it as flaming. I can only facepalm over the "get rid of the thread to get rid of potential problems" approach that is prevalent here. We can continue here if you don't mind; I still have that tab open with your answer before attempting to refresh the thread in a duplicated tab to check for further developments before replying.

It might not look like it from the outside, but France is MUCH more culturally diverse than Belgium. You'll have a much bigger culture shock going from Strasbourg to Marseille or Brest than you'll have going from Charleroi to Antwerp. And that's not even talking about French Antilles, which are culturally very different from mainland France.
Yes, that's because the whole French culture is unlike the Spanish or German one based on absorption of different cultures (the Spanish one is based on unification of different cultures and the German one on unification of the same major culture). In the case of Strasbourg, of course it looks different because that city has been founded by Germans. Therefore, it has been being culturally German from the architecture, regardless of which country has been in charge of that city.

Colonies are a different matter altogether. btw.: I don't believe in "nation" as a form of citizenship, but as a form of identity that is based on the longer-lasting passing on of language, culture and traditions from within the family and includes only people that at least look similar enough to a typical person from that ethnic group.

As for the national anthem, there is a version in French, one in Dutch and one in German. Usually everyone sings it in its own language. When bilingual groups like sports teams sing it, either everyone sings in his language (which sounds horrible), or they split one verse in dutch, one verse in french. The german version is never sung, as there are very few german-speaking people (about 20.000 i believe), and they almost all speak french.
Oh that explains how it is handled, thanks ^^
It's just a pity that the German version is never sung, but it makes sense, since the German-speaking community is ingrained in the French-speaking part.
