Do you think it's legit for characters to be voiced by the opposite gender (of the character in question)?

Or does that make it fake? In which case anime like Loveless and Boku no Pico fake yaoi anime. Because some characters are voiced by female voice actors. Is the Boku no Pico you thought you knew, a lie (cake)?

This was my point in example, pre peubescant male characters would be quite difficult for a fully developed male to match their pitch range. Does the gender of the VA overwrite the gender of the character? naa i dont think so, mainly because a VA can change dependent on the language and whatnot, but the character design not so much.
-3 Hikkimori points for refrencing Boku no Pico xD

Ehh, I guess it does make sense for it to be easier for female voice actors to voice child characters...

They say that in Ancient Greece theaters, all the characters, male and female, were played by men.
No, there is no problem with the mismatch.

It's pretty normal for voice actors to play characters of the opposite gender.

Prepubescent boys generally have more similar voices to adult women than adult men whether you like it or not so no

At least considering how many stellar performances like that there are out there where tons of people don't even realize that the VAs are girls

Young males and adult females have similar voices and since it takes a while for voice actors to get good it makes sense for female voice actors to play male children. I would find it weird for a woman to do the voice for a man or for a man to do the voice for any female, but if they're good at it then I don't have a problem with it. The characters are no more "fake" no matter who's giving them their voice. Foreign characters usually still have Japanese voice actors and we just accept that it's a fictional work and in universe they probably wouldn't sound like that.

There's one character in Tamako Market that appears to be female yet has an adult male voice actor in the original as well as both the English and Korean dubs, which has been taken as a hint that they might not be female.

for boys i think it's ok, but for adults...not so much

e.g. i can't stand watching Dragonball Super because of son gokus japanese voice - horrible. a rare case where the dub beats the original

I don't mind. I can't know the gender of the voice-actor until I look it up.

So I only have access to the performance, and it should be good. That's it.

Have you even heard Goku in the japanese version of Dragon Ball? This behemoth of a man sounds like my grandma's grandma's grandma! Really cool!

If you dont notice it sure why not, there are plenty of VA's who can make it sound like they are of the opposite gender
But if it is something super obvious like the original voice of songoku its super cringey and stupid

If it matters what gender the voice actor is, shouldn't age also matter?
All those 40 year old men voicing highschool boys. Does that make the highschool boys 40 years old?

why does it become a problem ?
there's TON of characters voiced by seiyuu of the opposite gender....
for example :
Luffy, Naruto, Hitsugaya, Edward Elric, etc

Young boys and some teenagers who haven't matured the voice yet have that type of voice, so it's nothing weird.

Now we have cases like the one of the Japanese Goku who are harring as Hell,

It's fine, I'll never understand why this is an issue.

Ogata Megumi is a a woman in her fifties and she makes the perfect teenage boy. You've gotta work with your strengths.

I've seen a lots anime with little girls and teenage girls being voiced by actual teenage or little girls, so I don't know why anime boys are never voiced by actual boys.

Though it is a bit annoying to hear boys and even teenage guys sounding like grown up women with a bad cold, I've seen enough anime that I've started to get used it.

Depends on the strength of the performance. I try to just hear the character.

Same goes for Naruto who is voiced by a 44 year old woman since he was a child to teen/adult.

What I face, what I have in mind and where my attention mainly vent on while watching anime is the character they voiced not the voice actor in person. As long as it is good I wouldn't mind.

If Japanese "males"(using the term males very loosely here), had any balls, this wouldn't even be a thing, but due to such, It's a necessary evil, because it would be worse off otherwise.

However even with that said, you can definite tell when a femal is voice acting a male character.

On the upside, one of the few males in Japan, does have balls, which resulted in what I consider the anime with the best Japanese VA cast to date, Kingdom(Evidently the VA in question, was stuck doing Bleach for ages, which is ashame, and why he's not in a whole lot of known modern day anime). Note: It also has a very usique, and amazing female VA as well, that actually makes her stand out among the millions of dime a dozene Japanese female VAs, so yea a very special VA cast to say the least.

Basically Kingdom is to Japanese VA, like Inuyasha+Inuyasha the Final Act is to English VA(hell The English VA for Kingdoms sucks pretty bad, just like the Japanese VA is atrocious in Inuyasha too)

In general though, I would rather the Japanese hire a Chinese male who could speak Japanese or a European living in Japan, instead of casting females in male roles.

If it's easier to get adult women to voice little boys then it is to get little boys to do it I don't have a problem with it.

I don't think that's what the OP was mainly asking about.

Although woman voicing little kids, does actually work pretty damn well.

I don't see a problem with it since they pretty much can do a good job with their acting.

You should see her how weird she sounds when she does live voice acting of Naruto. She sounds like that voice doesn't belong to her, lol.

I dont think its a problem if i dont dislike what i hear. And if i am right,is common in japan that adult woman get the main roles of 12 boys and under cuz it's easier for women to lower their voice's pitch than a man to make his voice's pitch higher like that of a woman.
Well many main char as naruto, son goku, luffy, gon, killua have fem VA.
