Are there any anime OPs that you feel are misleading to what the show is about - or animes that you wish were more like their OPs?

Main examples from me would be Mirai Nikki and Death Parade. Mirai Nikki's opening is pretty misleading to what the show is actually going to be; it's not surreal and wacky at all. If Death Parade was more like its opening with a funk-based soundtrack and generally lighter tone, then I could've enjoyed it much more.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have shows whose OPs pretty much define them. I think all of Hajime no Ippo's three OPs convey the tone of the entire series, and Ninja Slayer's OP does well to show what exactly the show is trying to be. I'd go as far as saying that the best judge of whether you will like these series or not is whether you like their OPs...

The Berserk opening. So upbeat.

"Put your grasses on, nothing will be wong!" - Nice try, mang...

Edit: Ayy LMAO, beaten by a few seconds.

Tanaka-kun Is Listless. THEY NEVER ONCE ALL GOT TOGETHER AND HUNG OUT AND HAVE A PICNIC. Show was 10/10 for me but because of that mislead I gave it an 8.

EDIT: That feel when someone proves you wrong. Still gave it an 8 though. #savage

That's pretty cool, I didn't know it was on TV Tropes.

Few there I disagree with, though. Welcome to the NHK's opening definitely shows what the show's going to be like.....

And this one is more dissonant that misleading.

If you want misleading and garbage in one, I'd suggest you check out the Kurenai opening.
It just doesn't make any fucking sense.

I tried looking for it on Youtube, but it's so shit that nobody even bothered to upload it.

I know three so far:
Madoka magica, which looked misleading but the lyrics actually fit the theme
But for gakkou gurashi tho, it was completly opposite of the anime until the later episodes
Death parade had a pretty misleading one, but it was still catchy

Definitely Madoka's op, after just seeing it I thought it'd be a regular mahou shoujo anime.
Narutaru's op is similar, it looks like it's a show for kids (and it's not).

Maybe also School Days? Most people who seen the op and didn't know what anime was about, thought it would be a regular, sweet romance triangle.

Quite a few of the Gintama openings are misleading...I know there are some pretty serious parts now and again, but a lot of the ops make it feel like it's a really tragic battle shounen or something XD

There's also Hunter x Hunter (2011), that opening makes it seem like you're in for a wonderful lighthearted adventure- "you can smile again", yeah right!! I thought I was gonna be watching Pokemon v2 with fishing rod wielding Green Goku, but those dreams were shattered!!!

Sure, but it's not like Madoka is super special about it. After all, Connect is about fate, promise, hope... I wouldn't say it's that different than, let's say opening for Sailor Moon. I won't give up, destiny, vow, these are pretty much synonyms.

With that opening Madoka could be easily about silly adventures of her, Mami and Sayaka like we see in the clips, maybe with some more drama towards the end. But we know how different it was than any other MS series.

Ugh, you beat me to it. I definitely agree with your post. At first, I thought it was going to be a typical slice of life moe show then the end of the first episode shocked me. I do love how the OP changed as the show went on.

People should also check the lyrics of that cutesy 1st ED of Madoka Magica. At first, it seems like the song is about a character (Madoka) going home but if you take a deeper look at the message that it was trying to portray, it's fucking depressing.

Based on the OP, you'd think there would be some serious sexual fanservice in this show. But nope, there isn't any.

Orenchi no Fujo Jijou's opening is so unnecessary and dramatic. The show is a cute slice of life featuring a merman that winds up living in a guy's bathtub. The most dramatic scene in the whole entire anime was when the MC was trying to get the merman to leave, in which he replied "Nyooooo~"

Elfen Lied's OP is extremely misleading. It tricks you into thinking it might be a good show.

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.

No the song's lyrical content is about promises, desperation, and moving forward past darkness, it makes perfect sense to keep it. Especially how

Even without understanding the lyrics it's still pretty melancholic in tone, never sounding carefree.

Although I agree with you with the lyrics part (The song is still pretty upbeat in rythm, but I'll admit that's me), I was also reffering to the visual aspect, which is the "misleading part", particularly later on.

And yeah, in retrospect it makes sense, and later on if you notice the lyrics it does too, I agree with that. Without prior knowledge, however, it is misleading, especially in the first episodes.

You mean the TV series, Rurouni Kenshin? The series was dubbed by Aniplex and was known as Rurouni Kenshin internationally. No one called it Samurai X--ADV just gave it that name when they dubbed the OVAs.

My favorite is Magipoka. According to the aforementioned TV Tropes page, the songwriters were told the show was about a group of halloween-style monsters, but by accident no one told them that it would be a slice-of-life comedy. The haunting and eerie theme song is so incredibly inappropriate for the tone of the show that it's ironically perfect for it. The blunder in the music makes a great symbol of the "comedy of errors" theme of the show.
