I've always been a little at odds with rating systems... At best, now I can look back and judge a certain show by which other shows I've given the same rating.
But I try to take other things into account as well. Mainly, the show's intended audience and what they were trying to accomplish. (So, a kids' show and an anime aimed at adults may have the same rating, but chances are I judged them based on very different things. And a sequel is being judged more against the other seasons in that series than against all anime in general.) And I can say that I definitely tend to weigh things like story and character development much higher than technical things like animation. Those are just the elements that are most important to me.
Current Projects:
Manga:
I'm about to pick up School-Live! I really loved the anime, and I've heard the manga expands on some of the technical things in the story, so I'm looking forward to that, as well as getting a real ending. And maybe this year really will be the one where I finally finish Ouran... It's moved from a box under my bed to an actual bookshelf in much easier reach, so we're getting closer. ^^'
On the anime side of things...
My focus has been very scattered lately. I've been watching a lot of movies. (I really loved Drifting Home; Children of the Sea was okay.) And I'm planning to pick up Canaan for real this month. I only got through 2 episodes last month... and I am enjoying it, I've just been distracted by other things.
On the longer-running series side of things... It's happened. I've officially begun One Piece. I'm closing in on episode 400 and things are heating up again. I know I'm nearing some of the big stuff, so that's giving me an extra push. I'm really close to finishing Dragon Ball GT, and I've been close to the end of 5Ds for a while... It's just a matter of finding the time.
And apparently Pokemon Journeys will be going on for a bit longer than I'd thought. It sounds like it's finished now... I'm just waiting on Netflix to catch up.

I just want to say one thing really quick that's been bugging me ever since I took a better look at the cover... That famous image of the little girl standing in the rain next to the giant Totoro... is inaccurate.
How the fuck have I never realized that before?
