Silent Witch: Chinmoku no Majo no Kakushigoto

In the Kingdom of Ridill lives a genius magician known to be the first person to ever use chantless magic. With this amazing skill, Monica Everett joins the Seven Sages as a hero who can defeat powerful dragons, such as the legendary black dragon, all on her own. However, the truth is that the Silent Witch developed chantless magic due to being too shy—preferring to live on a mountain top, far from society.

Her secluded lifestyle changes, though, when a fellow sage tasks her to covertly defend the second prince, Felix Arc Ridill, from attempts on his life. Unfortunately, that means she will have to go undercover as a student at Serendia Academy. Between guard duty and her social anxiety, Monica is facing her most difficult mission to date.

7.75/10; A lovely way to spend an afternoon. Very sweet -- animation is lovely and overall tone is gentle and comforting. The side characters are also quite well developed, and the comedy well timed.

That being said, I found myself wanting a bit more for this to be an 8+ show for me. First, the pacing felt a little uneven — not rushed, but some episodes started a bit abruptly, and a few story beats could’ve used smoother transitions. Certain aspects of the story and character development might actually benefit from picking up the pace a little — particularly in the more dramatic or action-heavy ... moments. I would say its 80% calm slice-of-life and 20% Monica being a bada**/moving the plot along. The other thing that felt a bit clunky was the beginning exploration of Monica's backstory. It’s super dark, which clashes with the otherwise light, slice-of-life tone. It’s not bad, but it could’ve been woven in with a bit more nuance to make it feel cohesive.

Overall, I really enjoyed this watch and recommended it for those who want a relaxing, cute breath of fresh air.

Mixed Feelings

The point I want to make about Silent Witch is that it's very cute and handles social anxiety really well — but it can feel repetitive at times.

From the title alone, “Silent Witch,” you can already tell the main character is shy. According to the synopsis, she’s incredibly strong in magic, but her shyness causes a lot of complications. The story balances her strength and awkwardness nicely — one moment she’s powerful, the next she’s struggling to talk to people. It’s a fun contrast, but because of this pattern, I found the story becoming predictable. She shines → she struggles socially → she gets better ... with support and friendship → repeat. Not exactly the same every time, but close enough that you start to expect it.

Character development is where the anime shines. Even though we don’t see every character’s past, they all feel distinct and memorable. Some side characters don’t get much screen time, yet I still remember them. The way the show portrays how people interact with someone shy is surprisingly thoughtful — whether it’s giving them space or reaching out first, it feels realistic and kind of inspiring. It reminds you that good people do exist, and maybe we should try to be more like them.

As for the visuals, they’re really pleasant to look at. Nothing groundbreaking, but definitely above average compared to other fantasy slice-of-life shows. The art style makes you want to stay in that world a bit longer.

Closing thoughts:
Silent Witch isn’t the best fantasy slice-of-life anime I’ve ever seen, but it’s one I’d absolutely recommend to someone new to anime — especially if they like wholesome stories or characters like Bocchi. The story can be predictable and slow at times, but it’s still heartwarming, and the visuals are lovely. For fans of quiet, emotional fantasy worlds, this one’s worth checking out.

I have never witnessed a series that more perfectly encapsulated the term "disappointing" than this one. Time and time again it reached the cusp of being good, or even great, and then stepped back into mediocrity. Ranging from bizarre directing choices, like having the narrator talk over an otherwise perfectly executed scene in the first episode, or failing to offer any real closure on any of the interpersonal dramas in the series, this series seems to have an aversion to realising its potential.

I cannot stress how much I wanted to enjoy this, but over and over the series seemingly refused to deliver on the premise ... it promised. I won't deny there were times where I laughed out loud, but the core story seemed fixated along lines that didn't evolve organically from the story being told. Constantly there are allusions to interesting and intriguing ideas and perspectives, but instead of exploring them this series seems determined to drag the show back into the most formulaic and predictable course of events possible. Opportunities for a mature examination of interpersonal relationships are dropped unceremoniously; opportunities for memorable comedy leave their punchlines unspoken; opportunities for epic action go unsatisfied.

Nevertheless this series was a solid 6 out of 10 for me until its closing minutes, where suddenly the supposed romantic relationship between the lead and the prince was advanced in the creepiest and least romanitc way possible. I don't usually like to get involved in shipping wars, but I honestly believe that only the lobotomised would consider the lead and the prince to have anything resembling romatic chemistry. I'm team Cyril for sure. I cannot stress the level of disgust I felt at what I was seeing in the show's final moments.

This is a show that at every climax, every moment where the audience should be most invested, chose to follow the least satisfying course of events. It is, more than anything else, excessively disappointing.
