I'm writing this from the sunny land of California, where it is currently raining, of all things. I've noticed that at the slightest sign of rain, some people here dress up in complete raingear- boots, poncho, umbrella. My pacific nw pride forces me to walk around in normal clothing regardless of rainfall. Actually, I rather enjoy the feeling of freezing rain dripping from my hair, along with the numbing sensation of being drenched to the skin.

What about the rest of you?

You Californians are spoiled for that very reason. Go get some heavy snow.

There's not a lot of rain lately, and if there is then it's just a little.. I really like walking in the rain, so I don't use an umbrella most of the time. I don't really like hoods either, so I just put on my coat and walk to where I need to go. But if it's a serious downpour, then I'd whip out my umbrella.

I haven't had an umbrella for at least twenty years. I'd kinda like another one, but I'm not entirely sure what to buy. I dislike those little foldy cheapo ones I see everywhere. :( I want something a bit sturdier, it'd make life easier since I live in an area that gets pretty decent winds, and those tiny popout ones are so flimsy.

This is just weird. I mean, are there actually umbrella brands? More importantly: does it really matter?

If it breaks you can always buy a new one for 3€.

Oh well, I like those Chinese people sell. Have 4 of them, all in different colors, but left the green one at a friend's car. I like my Black Cat umbrella I bought in Paris, it has to get some fixing now because the wind blew a piece of it away (apocalypse, I tell you). I have 3 small ones that fold, one is over 40 years old (was my grandmother's and is neon green), one is striped (but I left it at the bathtub of a friend...), other is brown. I also have my small Budapest umbrella, but it's on hiatus... Then there are two exclusive for my mother and one exclusive for my sister (only the cat one is truly mine, nobody else can use it) I like the ones that fold, because you can have them inside your purse. They only break if a diluve pours down, which is actually not that common. The downside to the long ones is that if it does not rain after all it's boring to carry it around.

Totally off in both cases, I live in Southwestern Ontario. Lol.

But, it still gets cold when it rains, and since the summer of 2005, which was really warm and awesome, we haven't had a summer that hasn't been ridiculously rainy and cold (14 fucking degrees? COME ON) for at least four out of eight weeks...

By east I meant anything east of BC, so I was right.

If my umbrella didn't break within a couple weeks of buying it, I'd use my umbrella if I were walking around outside. I would also bring it out at the first sign of rain, ie "Light drizzle" because once that happened in 5 minutes it will be raining really hard. I need to buy a new umbrella.. Maybe tomorrow.

I probably wasted hundreds of dollars by constantly buying those $2 umbrellas. They break like a mofo.

I voted for "Light drizzle" because I'll whip out my umbrella sometimes for that. It depends, though. My light jacket doesn't have a hood (if it's during the summer, I often go out without a jacket at all) and I walk and take the bus everywhere, so having an umbrella on me is extremely useful. My winter coat, however, has a hood so if it's a light drizzle, I often won't bother taking out my umbrella until it reaches "Steady downpour" level. Then again, it doesn't usually rain during winter, but this year, it's a warm winter so we've gotten some rain instead of snow =/

Anything from a light drizzle on up I'll generally try to use an umbrella. I'm not a big fan of getting wet (especially my face - raindrops on the glasses is rather annoying), so if there's a somewhat decent amount of drops coming down it's umbrella time for me.

If there's just a few here and there I'm slightly more adventurous.

I carry around a backpack most of the time so that I can carry anything I buy when Im out and about so I can grab onto the handlebars on skytrain without having my groceries/ whatever in the way, and I keep an umbrella in there all the time. I use it whenever its raining enough to get get my glasses wet.

It depends on what I'm wearing. If it is drizzling and I'm just running to the mailbox or something then I'll just throw on a swearshirt. If I'm going to school or what have you, am dressed up, or have my hair done up, then I take an umbrella because my hair gets frizzy when it gets wet and air dries.

Pfft. Umbrellas. I live in a city where it rains all the time the only time I ever use an umbrella is when it's showering.

Seconding this. There's no point bringing around an umbrella almost every day. I just wear a jacket that has a hood.

It's always a good idea to have one in your bag though, if not for yourself, you can always lend it to a cute girl. (Or guy, I guess. )

I don't really walk anywhere considering there are no sidewalks here. So I haven't had to use an umbrella in years. When it does rain if I have somewhere important to be, up goes the umbrella, but my hair is the type of curly that becomes amazing/sexy when it gets wet. I don't know why. So I'll typically let my hair loose and strut my stuff and laugh at the girls who are freaking out because their hair is becoming a frizzy mess. Makes me happy.

Only when I really need to, anyways I'd rather not use it because I have to rush to the bus in a narrow passageway (wired fences on both sides) and being careful about the umbrella would just hinder my speed.

Everytime when it's rains - I walk a lot, and I study far away of my home, so if I will get wet, I will be wet all day. And because I hate it, I take umbrella with me every day, and used it, when I see a single drop of rain ^^
