Not much for me lol. Close my eyes and most of my guesses are off.

It's strange though, my most well known phrase is 'let go'.

I can recognise a bunch of words, but most of my guesses in translating full fledged sentences are totally off.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Enough to understand short special episodes.
I watched last season's "Himouto! Umaru-chan'S" completely raw and understood almost all of it. It also helps to see what is happening on screen.

Prior to learning any Japanese, watching anime taught me nothing more than a few common phrases like "itadakimasu" or general greetings and farewells. The rest is mostly incomprehensible, and I didn't even understand what "desu" is. Of course, I made no attempt to look things up or learning anything.

After actually learning Japanese for a year in university, I now constantly learn new things quite naturally just from watching anime. Once you know the basics of sentence and word structures, the rest is mostly just vocabulary that can be picked up over time. It did help a great deal that I know both Chinese and Latin; Japanese bears similarity with both of them, so it was fairly easy to pick up.

TL;DR: Learn the basic syntax, common conjurations and verbs, and you will be able to pick up a lot more language learning from watching anime.

When I was still doing primary education I understood pretty much all, now like 10%? Back in my youth I watched everything RAW, because I didn't have the patience to wait on the subs. But now on the other hand :P, I'm so busy with school, that I can't even complain about the subs, anymore, derp. I'm now 99% depended on the subs, so bye bye good old raw watching days.

I probably wouldn't understand a thing from a real conversation in Japanese, but hey, most anime dialogues are so simple that I found myself surprised to realize that I could understand an entire episode without subtitles recently. For the most part.

Language in different anime differs. Some are simple and have simple language, so I could understand them within a few years of watching anime. Others are so complicated and dialogue-heavy I can't understand them even after I learned some japanese grammar.

Truth is 80% of anime dialogues are composed of such sentences, though.
Of course it depends on the series. In LoGH those basic interjections are down to 5% at most.

I though quite a lot before I started a course in uni :D vocab wise it was actually quite a lot. And the first thing our teacher told us was, "OK now forget all anime Japanese you know, because we will be studying academic Japanese" and she said it with one of these nikoniko smiles where just after a look you know "it smiles with it's eyes closed, it must be evil/ dangerous"

I'm currently studying in Japan and guess what, I can understand anime sure, but can not quite follow a daily life conversation normal speed + the slang and all shortened words. So as an answer to the question, anime thought me vocab, no Japanese!

It's "koroshiteyaru".

When I started watching 2 years ago I also started studying Japanese not much later, and I can understand most simple-intermediate dialogue without subtitles. Some have really advanced vocabulary for my level, though, and I end up not understanding very much without subtitles, one example being Psycho Pass. Genres like slice of life and romance anime are perhaps the simplest in terms of language used, while anime with the Psychological tag can be tricky.

Have picked up some random words and phrases, but not enough to make out most full sentences. In terms of what I can speak, maybe enough to sound like a Japanese kid who's about to enter kindergarten/preschool, with a pinch of R-rated/potty mouth vocab tossed in as well.

If you want to learn Japanese, anime can be a good supplement to the typical book/classroom studies, especially if you want to pick up intricacies/subtleties into how Japanese is spoken in daily casual conversation. I think grasping full sentences from anime is quite challenging because of how different the sentence structure of Japanese is versus English.

None. Or rather, I truly understood Japanese when I delved into translating a Japanese game.

The problem with trying to learn Japanese from anime alone is that most anime have no Japanese subtitles. You really can only grasp the Japanese language better when you know how the exact Japanese words look like while speaking them and not just speak them without knowing the exact words.

Well, prior to learning japanese, I basically knew like 20 words (sasuga, kirei, kawaii etc.) but now i've been learning japanese for around 3 months and I can understand like 50% of simple, romance J-Dramas and around 25% of anime dialogue. Which is I guess OK, i hope to reach 70s in both of these by the summer ( by then i should have around 4500 vocabulary bank).
