First off all,let me make this clear. Art and Animation are two completely different things. If we are talking about animation,I have to admit from what little I have seen ,the newer animation style takes not only the cake but also the cherry along with it in most cases.

When I mean older artstyle,I guess anything pre 2000 fits the criteria.

Personally speaking,I can't really judge because each has their own merits.

So anyways,Discuss~

Quality of Design in Art Style and quality due to newer technology are 2 diferent things for me.

When you look at someting like berserk it easily shits on aloot generic newer shows style wise but it certanly has dated features too and will never look as fresh as anime that is modern from beginning, also if we add into the play remastered/Upscaled new editions things become more complicated to judge.

It all comes down to preference but id say both old and new generations are equal have their Ace cards it cant be generalized.

animation is bunch of moving drawings
drawings are art or have different art style

so how come art style is not part of animation?

In simplest terms:

- Animation is about movement.
- Style is about character design, colors, anything not related to movement.

I prefer old art style since it's more detailed. And I prefer art that is drawn in paper not on computers.

ok but Art Styles of anime are simple to draw and animate it faster, so Art Styles do matter on making movements/animation

Its hard to articulate without some technical terms but I guess, this video touches a few points

I guess, more experienced people about these topics should be able to clear your confusion a bit more.

Really this is a pretty huge generalization

But still I think at least in terms of character designs, newer ones look so much more appealing

well he did mention what i have said too that character designs or art styles of anime in general tend to be less complex or simple to animate, so i still i think people are really dividing art styles with animation here

Well by that definition, newer artstyle doesn't really have that much to show, what would you consider to belong to the newer artstyle category then?

I think the newer set of Japanimations hav more unique artstyles that is influenced by the older generations of artstyles that was also unique in their own way in the past. I think that the stronger Japanese Comic influences on Japanimation is one of the reasons to this

Since I'm extremely picky with animation and appearance, it's no contest the newer art style.

If I watch something that has cheesy animation and off-putting designs, I will not take the show seriously. It's closed-minded, but it's a preference at the very least.

I'm currently in the middle Evangelion (watched 18 episodes today) and I love its art style.

I like newer art styles as well, although I'm not interested in this aspect of Anime that much.

What is of greater importance to me is the animation. I agree that many new Anime have better animation than older ones, but many, if not most of them, rely on CGI a lot as well. It's not that I'm against the utilization of CGI, but only when it's done well. In most cases, however, it isn't.

It kind of is? Older styles tend to lean on certain traits and newer styles lean on other traits - if this wasn't true you wouldn't be able to tell when an anime was from just at a glance but you normally can. Of course your opinion probably extends BEYOND old or new too, but that's a fair starting point.

It's about preference - 'both' just means you don't care about the art style that much. It doesn't mean people who didn't pick it might not like older anime art at all, they just prefer newer or vice versa.

I love older animation way more than nowadays.
In today's days the trend is the moe/cute animation, plus childish animation. One example is the old Hunter x Hunter and the new one. It seems it was drawn to please younger viewers.
We don't see that dark atmosphere anymore. Teenagers and adults could appreciate the older art style. I don't see a man in his 30's liking a moe animation type.

There's like 10x more studios and anime being made these days, it's also easier for solo people to make and get anime out there, and with computers being better and cheaper, there's way more variety nowadays so I would have to say new.

No preference over older or newer art style.
Though the older art gave off a "vintage" feel which I find it nice to indulge in.

Nevertheless, it is hard to please "Anime bitches" nowadays who like to nitpick over a unique character design that isn't even badly done.
Your taste in Anime is shit.

Because you can't differentiate between what's good and bad.

How sad.

Of course, I prefer the older art styles. There are various Anime art styles throughout the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s that I love. I love the way hair and eyes were drawn in these time periods, and I find the colors used for skin tones to be much better than the ones used in newer Anime. Older Anime makes me all warm inside.

There are some post-2000 art styles that are nice, but they're still not as good looking as older Anime, because too many of them use horrible color choices for skin tones.

aslong its not between 2001-2006 which is bunch of over big eyes, i don't have any problem. old give retro vibes and and newer animation is cleaner. for example, ushi to tora doing great job with old vibes, and non non biyori also great.

Older art style for sure. I love beautiful hand drawn landscapes in old anime. It's more detailed and realistic in most cases. When it comes to character design, my favourite are 80s and also 70s.

"Significant difference" my ass. Kyoani's attempt to imitate Key's signature eye style is what mainly sets clannad apart from kyoani's typical works. Lucky star came out the same year as clannad iirc, and it looks different for the same reason; they wanted it to look like the source. When i said they "hardly switched up", i meant when they try to do their own thing instead of copying the source material. What they did with the haruhi anime adaptation, which aired before clannad, and looks similar to the two anime you posted, ended up becoming the template for most of kyoani's anime in the future. The user who i initially replied to made it seem like clannad was the standard for kyoani and anime in general from the time it came out, which wasn't even a decade ago.

Not that I disagree with you but KyoAni just adapted the character designs as they were in the VN.

And yeah, there is a common misconception that all of KyoAni's stuff looks the same.
