| The first couple episodes are so dry, people lose interest before they get around to the 30th episode mark. Even once I got to there, it's still nothing stellar, I've seen better comedies, and its attempts to be heartwarming are out of place. Besides Gintama has five spots on the MAL top 10, I think the general consensus is most people love it. |

| It has to be a form of protest over the broken scoring system that allows it to colonise half of the Top 10. Some feel like it's a legitimate struggle to have after other peaceful means have failed. |

TL;DR yes gintama is brainless intertainment, but if you don't have any knowladge about it refference , of course refference gonna flay above your head. maybe this look not funny for everyone, but only people that already get used and know about it will laugh on it. |

| Because those people are people who can see what is really funny for themselves, not some obnoxious contrived reference laden kind of jokes that everyone claims to be the best thing ever exists for anime since, well, anime. Or they are just anti hippies. Accept it, Gintama is not universally liked. Only anime hippies like it. It's actually not because Gintama takes five spots in the top ten of MAL, it's the reverse. People come to MAL not knowing what Gintama is, and the first thing they see is some random series taking half the top ten's love. Outside MAL, it's pretty unknown, to the non Japanese general anime discussions, that is. |
