Wrong, otaku is a derogatory term used for unhealthily obsessive anime fans. Some of these people are so messed up, they would sell their internal organs just to get an action figure of their favorite anime character. I never knew that western countries can modify a language that's not ever theirs.

Otaku doesn't even have to mean an anime fan in Japan, just someone who's a social recluse/outcast with obsessive interests. I'm well aware of the original meaning behind otaku, no need to "enlighten" me. Why can't countries take words/terms from a different language? A lot of words in the English dictionary are taken from German or Latin words/phrases.

One. When I was a senior in high school, this one freshman girl wore a lolita dress maybe every week, if not then every other week. At the time I had no idea what it was and just thought of it as like an 1800's maiden dress for some odd reason (I didn't watch anime at the time, so I had no idea lolitas existed).

I only know two otakus in person, both of which are male, overweight and socially awkward. Not meaning to be offensive, but they are.

One time I did see a woman with pink hair and an Asian coat browsing the anime section of JB Hi-Fi.

The anime club at my school houses the otakus, they would come to school cosplaying anime characters or wear animal ears with maid uniforms. I've only went to the club meeting twice, the first time they had everyone watch anime together and the second time everybody had to sing anime songs and play anime-themed games. Everybody in there mixes random Japanese with English, overall it was cringe-worthy. I don't ever want to go back.

This.

Except people who just publicly like anime aren't Otaku. The same way someone who publicly plays mobile games isn't a hardcore gamer. Or someone who enjoys Tv now and again isn't a TV head.

Otaku are anime obsessed not casual norms. Find it silly Otaku are trying to re-invent the name into something casual to give a false image out to cover reality by calling it a 'negative stereotype' sorry but thats reality.

I've seen and interacted with a lot of them since I worked in a convention, and I've to say, I was impressed, most of them were really nice and easy to talk, some of the cosplayers were kinda rude, but hey there is rude people everywhere.
Also two of my friends are the exact stereotype of otaku and I really enjoy being with them.

So.....not Otakus then? An Otaku is someone unhealthily obsessed. An anime fan can still show their love of anime and not be otaku.

Yes, I've seen some otakus in real life. I generally avoid them, but then again, they don't always like to be approached. Honestly, they shed a poor light on the anime community. There are other people in my school who watch anime and such, and they are perfectly fine to be around and discuss. When you discuss anime or manga with an otaku, it's like a battle to keep your head above the water.

I know that feel. It's like having to compete with them.
I once saw three military guys at the base here arguing and looking serious and all. I thought they were talking about something really important. When I passed by they were talking about Sword Art Online.

I haven't, if we are talking about the extreme otaku stereotype. I've only seen then on videos on youtube, so for me, they are just as mythical as unicorns, fairies or eskimos.
Other than that, I sometimes met some people who are reading manga on campus or in a coffee shop. No other accessories or anime clothing, so I wouldn't really call them otaku.

Yeah go to any convention... and yeah it can be pretty cringy at times.

By your definition, I've been that otaku. But if we're talking about like actual anime otaku, I've seen those.
I used to wear a lot of anime shirts, but then I stopped because I was attracting weird or bad people. I also try to avoid talking to people with anime merch on unless it's something I really like. Because there are quite a few times when I've talked to people who were wearing merch only to end up regretting everything. Everything.
