| Here's a reasonable answer to your question: People who are new to anime think that anime is the best medium and give high scores to show people that even bad anime are better than other media... But as time passes, some of them realize that anime is also crap... they start to think broadly... This is all there's is to it... nothing more.. nothing less. |
| In school 60% is the passing grade, I use that as my benchmark when rating animé : I'll give a 6 to shows I find barely adequate. Also considering MAL doesn't give you the option to hand out zeros, I treat 1 as if it was 0. I haven't given a 1 to any show yet, a show would need to have no redeeming quality AT ALL to get that score from me :) |
| People here definitely rate too high. When I gave a 6 to Baka to Test, I wasn't being harsh. It effectively means "above average". And then when I gave the second season a 4, it means it was below average. For a comedy to not make me laugh once in 6 episodes, that's rather nice. But it's too competent in other areas to get a 3 or a 2. 7 = Good, managed to do everything it was expected to do. 8 = Good, exceeded expectations 9 = Only a few things prevent it from being a masterpiece 10 = Masterpiece Other than having my 1 solely reserved for the OreImo ending, I make full use of the entire scale from 2 to 10. |

| IGN is just fucking terrible though. Not to mention, many of them have 100 point scales. Or 10 point scales with decimal places. It's just nonsensical to rate games like that. X-Play's 5 point rating system is still the best if you ask me. 1 = complete shit 2 = below average, at best recommended for diehard fans of the genre/franchise 3 = average 4 = pretty fucking good 5 = masterpiece The majority of the games they reviewed were between 2-4, 1 and 5 are reserved for special occaisons. |

I also wouldn't call something I rated a 7 average since I most likely did enjoy it. I rated a lot of anime 7 but they are not average to me as I did enjoy watching them all. I don't rate many things below 5 simply because they are average/bad and if they are average/bad then I wouldn't have completed them. They would be dropped half way, hence my big dropped list. |

| Because I'm Dutch, so I'm accustomed to the rating system we use in schools here. (In which 5.5 is barely passable, and 5 is not good enough) so using 5 as 'avarage' doesn't make sense to me. Also I rate on enjoyment, and I generally enjoy stuff I watch. |
