I'll set the limit to 2 episodes.

So the question is essentially; 'which anime had the best opening 1-2 episodes to get you hooked straight away'?

For me it was Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, by episode 2 I was already in love with all the characters and laughing my snot out at Shiinas antics, and there was already no way I was ever going to get sick of that anime.

Usually with romantic comedies it takes 4-6 episodes for me to truly get hooked, but what Sakurasou managed was for me unheard of.

I still find myself rewatching the Baumcuchen scenes and laughing just as hard as I did the first time.

So...

Cross Game
Tamayura ~hitotose~

Honey and Clover and Cross Game had two of the most captivating introductory episodes I've seen so far.

As far as I know, F/Z's first episode was more of a turn off with them being nothing but a huge info dump and character introductions. And loli bug rape.

I donno about you guys, but I found the whole thing pretty captivating.

I learn about each character's motive and personality, as well as strategy and fear. Generally, I'm not a big fan of info dump, but I feel F/Z did it very well.

I strongly believe an anime's pilot episode is the window to the anime's potential and a director's passion. The passion, to me, was overflowing.

Not saying I'm always right, as I also had very high hopes for Red Data Girl...

Speaking from experience...
A promising, unique episode 1 have the potential to be great.
A bad episode 1 never leads to great anime.

Seconding Kino's Journey and Cross Game. Although, it was mostly the second episode of Kino's Journey that did the trick. Cross Game's first episode made me stop immediately before I marathoned the crap out of it. It seems like it really deserves to be savored over a good few weeks. Anyways, off the top of my head,

Humanity Has Declined - The bread, the liberal translation glasses, Ave Maria, and Kami.

Hanasaku Iroha - After Ohana's grandmother was introduced, I was really invested.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Baseball bats etc

The iDOLM@STER - Definitely a unique opening for a show I had no expectations for.

Ga-Rei: Zero - I'd hate to have watched this while it was airing.

Panty & Stocking - I think it was the super high energy that did it for me.

By hooked you mean extremely interested? I'd say SAO's concept hooked me. White Album 2's first 2 minutes were intense.

Pretty much it really. Most of the other animes were "meh" in terms of hooking me in.

I'm currently watching Shin Sekai Yori and it's first episode definitely grabbed a hold of me from the start with the "Going Home" theme. But, one particular scene involving Saki standing in silhouette with that same piece of music really grabbed a hold of me, maybe because it reminded me a bit of Utena's shadow girls. By the time her narration at the end of the second episode I was pretty much sold. Looking forward to the rest of the series, I hope it lives up to the great start.

Cross Game and Fate/Zero are stand outs off the top of my head. I would say Evangelion, but the truth is that that series didn't really grab me until Shinji's hiatus in episode 4. Though the 2nd episode did have some pretty good scenes. Ah, Monster had a really strong first episode as well. But, otherwise, I can't think of many of my favorites that had particularly strong starts.

It was either Blood+, Death Note or Midori no Hibi. The thrilling/mysterious atmosphere in Blood+ just kept me curious about what was going to happen next. It was the same thing in Death Note.

Midori no Hibi hooked me because of how novel the premise was. It completely surprised me and I just had to know where the story would go after the first and second episodes.

Yeh you should, I'm absolutely +1'ing the previously mentioned opinion.
I just recently rewatched the first ep (with my brother), and it was a really good introductory episode.

Besides SnK, NGE comes to my mind.

It's Kamisama no Memochou for me. The first episode was just excellent. Sure, it's neither tricky or groundbreaking but succeeds based on style, timing, cast and general dexterity. And despite only tiny bit of the second half that come across as "punching" it's basically an expositional episode, but it never feels like one - the layers behind the premise are laid out quite naturally in the context of the narrative, and not via pretentious expositions that stick out like a sore thumb and grind the story to a halt *cough*Mahouka*cough*

It's really unfortunate that the second half of the series (beginning from eps 7) devolves into incomprehensible mess. Such a waste of good premise, if you ask me.

Lots of good ones already mentioned. I enjoyed these too:

Ergo Proxy & Mushishi

Loved the combo of mystery, music, and action that set off Ergo Proxy. That scene with the Proxy

and Mushishi--talk about atmosphere LOL.

Echoing Shinsekai Yori. That New World Symphony scene!
