Western as in people in the west.

Is it the same way as in how we view Asian people that are obsessed with iphone/Apple products or Koreans that are obsessed with LoL and SC2.

I am kind of curious. Lol.

I wouldn't say I am an Otaku though. I do watch a lot of Anime, but I don't have figurines of any Anime stuff. :D

I also prefer Dub over Sub.

Whoa, really?

Anyway I'm pretty sure they view us as filthy casuals, and rightfully so.
And I mean that in the most sexually painful way possible.

I don't think the Japanese Otakus are even viewed well in Japan, much less the "western" ones.

I would guess that more people are understanding / non judgemental of otakus in Japan considering its a larger part of their culuture. But I think the prevalent view of most people there are that Otakus seem to be "weird". That's what it seems to be like at least from the anime I've watched that were set in the real world setting (haha so take my view with a grain of salt since I haven't researched what Japanese actually think, just inferring opinions based on common anime occurances based in real world setting)

Now If we are talking about an "anime fan" that isn't like an obnoxious weeabo or NEET, and is more like a normally functioning person who happens to watch some anime as a hobby, that's probably different than what you are thinking an "otaku" is. I think these people might be viewed less harshly/judgementally from people in Japan as compared to people in the USA for example. Just because they are more informed of what anime is, they will be more likely to not autmoatically think its just for kids, or its just hentai, like a lot of people in the USA assume that it is.

Is it bad over in Japan or in the USA for example if one watches a lot of Anime, but doesn't show it. By not showing it, I mean that he doesn't really talk about Anime/ Have figurines and etc.

Freaks and weirdos. This assumes we're talking about Japanese people who know what anime is, as well as know of the western anime fanbase. Although, the same could be said of any outsider looking at a fandom though. Since we're a foreign fandom though, it's...worse or something?

Really depends on the person doing the judging.

If I saw a Japanese guy obsessed with Marvel/DC comics I'd be like "that's an awesome dude"

Loli is a whole different story. No way you can keep people from hating people who like that. That being said I don't think someone would find a foreign guy who watches loli any worse than a native.

By the same token, if a grown man likes DC comics, they can be seen as childish, inmature etc.

That stigma applies mostly to single grown men I think. I can only speak from the perspective of a guy who likes that stuff and I can't look at a single old guy who is obsessed with anime/comics without feeling like that will be me one day. So it makes me sad.

However those movies were basically inspired by cartoon.

I don't think the U.S still have a stigma against nerds. If you are not a socially awkward male then liking Anime/Comics won't really hurt your rep.

People that hate nerds are the ones that hate the anti-socialness of the nerds.

The negative stigma of being a nerd in the U.S is long gone. If a socially competent male likes anime/video games/Comic, it wouldn't really hurt his rep.

When people hate nerds, they meant that they hate the anti-social nature of the nerds.

I don't know if this goes under anti-social nature, but they don't hate the anti- social aspects of nerds (I mean, what is there to hate about an anti-social person?). What they do hate is their lack of social skills, which is another thing altogether.

What. The social stigma is nowhere near being "gone"

I think gaming for one is slowly being more accepted into the masses. But Cartoons anime and comics are still considered childish.

I don't think they care. We have almost no impact on the industry so there's no reason for them to be concerned with us. We have no presence on 2ch and Japanese blogs, anyway, so they probably forget we even exist.

It doesn't really hurt anyone though. Watching anime or reading comics isn't going to be a point dinger for a person looking to be in a relationship.
It is only when a person that is obsess with those stuff would it be detrimental to their "social status".

Nobody here really knows. And the ones who act like they do are usually just repeating information that trickled over in the early '90s. That or regurgitating Hideako Anno's incoherent, self-loathing rambling on the subject.

The best anyone can say is it's probably a lot like anywhere else. It depends on the individual and to what degree they act like social nitwits as a result of their obsession. If you dress well enough, keep up with hygiene, and can interact with others in a normal way while also being an anime freak, you're probably fine. If you're a smelly NEET stuttering and sweating all over school girls in public places, you might raise a few eyebrows.

They probably don't even know we exist. I mean, the guests who come to Western conventions seem really surprised at just how many people outside of Japan like anime.

If they do know we exist, they probably view us no better than the strange otaku in Japan.

Most probably, they don't even care. They aren't there and they'll probably never meet one anyway.

As for a more general approach, as in "looking down or not if they meet one", well, western anime fans are basically same as japanese anime otaku except they download more than they buy, and can't explain properly to other their hobby since they most probably don't talk japanese anyway.
So, they would probably see western anime fan on a far worse manner than they see japanese anime otaku.
