Are swimming pools actually commonplace in Japanese schools?

In America, few high schools have their own swimming pools on campus. Usually they are reserved for the more wealthy schools (such as private schools). However, general anime-watching seems to show that almost every high school in Japan has their own swimming pool.

Are real high schools in Japan like the ones shown in anime?

For the private school part is kinda false.

Everything else seems to look true imo.

My highschool was pretty nice and didn't have a pool. Although, there was a private swim pool in walking distance that our swim team used. I don't think any of the public schools in my area had pools now that I think about it.

my high school had an indoor pool connected to the locker room in between it and the gym. This school was essentially right next to a ghetto and was populated by mainly ghetto kids.

we had an indoor pool in school

since Japan is big on after school clubs schools would need a pool for the swimming club so I'd assume it isn't uncommon

I live and teach in Japan for the past 5 years. With the exception of a small number of schools I have taught at, they have pools. In the case they didn't if there was a beach or river nearby, they swam there instead.

Didn't have a pool, I don't think any others where I live did but I can't say for sure.

There were a few middle schools that were literally right next to rec centres though so they'd have swimming and skating "field trips"

Not sure how many other schools had pools, but the public HS I went to had an indoor pool as well. And I live in the "Armpit of America".

No swimming pool at my grade schools. Though a Jesuit, Catholic private high school near my area has an indoor, Olympic size (no joke) swimming pool.

This thread has turned into "did your school have a swimming pool" so I'll answer that question. My high school does, though we share it with the nearby Y.

Pretty sure most schools in my country have a swimming pool. Thing is, most of the time, it's shit. The water is as cold as melted ice water, as dirty as swamp water, especially the areas around. It just feels so disgusting walking barefoot around it. The public pools are much much better.

No, every school does not have a swimming pool. It's more common for a high school to not have a pool than to have a pool. You would only have a swimming pool if your school prides itself on its swim team or something like that. Swim is not part of the standard P.E. cycle of activities.

Not having a pool does not necessarily mean the school is poor. It could also mean the school is not interested in supporting its swim team, for instance.

p.s. I live in Los Angeles, California.

Some countries actually spend money on schools, instead of planes that immediately get sent to boneyards or tax breaks for multibillionaires.

But despite being in America, my high school in a working-class/suburban neighborhood did actually have a pool.

The schools I studied in don't have a swimming pool. Or an indoor basketball gym but there are outdoor basketball courts. I guess only the wealthier schools have those. I think it's cos in my country, sports are seen as only hobbies and not as career choices.

And wow, a person from Japan actually answered. That's really cool..

Nooooo. For me, no. I'm self-conscious about my body (as are at least 40% of the females in my grade) so I'd rather not swim with others.

The only educational institute in Swansea with a pool that I know of is the University.

But by god it's a quality pool..... It's used to train Team GB olympic swimmers.

Can't speak for Japan but I would guess no.

Pools in anime are usually only there for cheap shots of cartoon chicks in bikini's.

We have swimming lessons, but so far as i know, schools just rent out the pools of the local leisure centres for an hour.

Our school never had a pool :(

I don't think every single school would have a pool anyways, the upkeep for that is kinda expensive and there are usually local facilities nearby.

And my high school had an indoor swimming pool. I don't think its really that rare..

The richest Public Secondary Schools in the world are actually in the Toronto Suburbs

e.g. http://www.bondfield.com/portfolio/schools/000130billcrot/lightboxes/bill-crothers-secondary-school-01.jpg

This school above has a Semi-Olympic size pool and its not a private school
