The original is almost always better, manga that are adapted of off anime like Princess Tutu, School Days (VN or whatever), Yosuga no Sora (this one was like a freakin' summary), Madoka, their anime counterparts are much better, it's like they didn't even try ....

Almost every battle anime. Sorry but to me sound is very very important. Color and animation too. Just look at the Naruto and One piece manga, and probably all the shonen manga. Often I can hardly distinguish what is going on due to the lack of color and animation.

Agreed so much. Battle anime are usually way more enjoyable and better in anime form. Even one piece with it's snail pace in the anime is a bit more enjoyable due to the voice acting.

But stuff like Berserk, Vagabond, Vinland Saga and Kangoku Gakuen are more enjoyable and fitting in manga form , other than Berserk none of those got an anime adaption yet but I still strongly believe that they won't be as good as the manga.

So I guess

Shounen:
Anime > Manga.

Seinen:
Manga > Anime.

But in general imo:
Manga > Anime.

IMO the audio-visual experience is just as important if not even more important than the story itself...

The audio part is what used to keep me from reading manga for so much. I think the voice acting has a lot to do with whether or not I like/dislike certain characters.

Oh yeah Kangoku Gakuen is definetly one of those manga that probably wouldnt work to well as an anime. And I think that is because basically 50% of the manga is build of frames taken from specific angles or showing a very very detailed expression, something that would be hardly possible with anime. Its like that manga was build with the concept of static frames in mind, altough there is some scenes here and there where it would profit from animation, but they are far in between.

All in all I still prefer anime tough... I just love the sound, I could excuse the lack of animation in everything else but battle manga, I could excuse the lack of voiceacting, but I cant get over the lack of music. And no playing some random track in the background doesnt work for me...

Yeah this thread should be about manga to anime adapatations, not the opposite because manga adaptations of original anime usually end up being very lacklauster

Anyway FMA(2003)

Also bleach for the amazing music and actually good animation

Gintama no doubt, The animation studio and director know how to hold their own ground and make the filler not only hilarious in its own right but somehow more creative and funny than alot of the stuff by the original creator, and considering they throw in a ton of anime only jokes into already funny regular stories makes it even more enjoyable, and thats not even including the phenomenal voice acting by everyone + the music that makes the jokes work even better as well as make the more serious scenes feel more alive, and speaking of serious scenes when those come around the animation studio pulls out all the stops and makes some extremely fluid fight scenes which by gintama' are movie quality. I simply cannot read the manga at this point cause the adaption is just so much better. That and the art for the manga is a little worse than bleach's(though sorachi seems to make fun of the fact he cant draw super well)

also i personally think fma 2003 has a much more intricate and well thought out plot and characters than brotherhood though both are some of the best in the industry

Yes. I consider the Dragon Ball anime to better than its manga counterpart for these little reasons: In the anime, Goku's cloud is referred to as the Flying Nimbus, but in the manga, it is called the Kinto'un, and I don't know how to pronounce it and find it awkward that that's how he summons his cloud. His staff is also known as the power pole in the anime, while in the manga it's called Nyoibo, and again it's sounds awkward. Also, the Roshi character is known as The Turtle Hermit: Master Roshi in the anime, and the Kamesennin: Muten Roshi in the manga. If only the manga was fully translated into English. It's like Light Yagami being called Raito Yagami if you read the Death Note manga on the internet.

The only thing the Dragon Ball manga has over the anime is that you get to see Bulma's breasts when she's showering in the manga, while her breasts are censored in the anime.

I also consider the One Piece anime to be slightly better than the manga for one small reason: The swordsman is called Roronoa Zoro in the anime, but Roronoa Zolo in the manga. Everything else seems fine in the manga, so this is just a nitpick.

Isn't that just the English dub version of Dragon Ball? I'm pretty sure that the Japanese version calls these characters and objects Muten Roshi and Kinto'un and so on. I may be remembering wrong, though, I only watched a little bit of Dragon Ball after all.

I've only watched the English dub version of the Dragon Ball anime, so I cannot comment on the Japanese dub of the anime.

Why is everyone saying SnK?

The manga doesn't have the piss poor pacing and constant use of stills.

You're right, in the manga everything is still lol
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Higurashi's manga is pretty awful IMO. A different artist does each arc so the character designs always are inconsistent and sometimes the characters don't stay true to their character.

Fullmetal qlchemist brotherhood. The manga is good yeah, but brotherhood took out some of the boring bits, which I liked

Hellsing (ultimate). The manga for hellsing is pretty bad, with shitty art and an incomprehensible story. The anime was a lot more fun and the story made more sense, for some reason.

I haven't read the Berserk manga, and even though the adaptation was unfinished, it still provided so much more than the manga ever could for the parts that they shared.

All shounen... unless they're adapted by Toei. Then the manga counterpart is better.

OT: I'll have to go with Gintama, because it takes full advantage of the fact that it's an anime. There are a bunch of anime-only jokes, though some manga jokes were lost in the transition because some just wouldn't work in an anime. The voice acting is amazing, especially for the three main characters.

Gintama is probably the most famous example

also a ton of music-oriented ones like K-On for example work much better when it actually has audio, so in that setting the anime adaptations are often better

huh? an anime will essentially always have less content than its source material, why would it always provide more?

I wasn't speaking in line of plot points. I was talking about the audio (soundtrack voice-acting, improved emotional moments), visuals (motion for those with fights, colour), ability to distinguish actions, and the combination of all that. Manga just can't compare.

Though I have not read the manga.. the two episode ova is about voice acting eroge.
I feel like you won't get the same effect when you read it than watching it, since you can hear them voice act.

I honestly wouldn't have bothered posting that comment if the TV series being unfinished was the only thing that made it an inferior product compared with the manga.
Sometimes soundtrack and animation are simply not enough to make things better, because of all the problems inherent in the process of adaptating works from one medium to another (things needed to be left out, modified etc.).
And Berserk adaptations are good examples of that, imo.

Also, read the manga. It's great.

I was referring to an anime that replicates the manga nearly panel to panel and doesn't leave major plot points out. When that's the case, then the anime is always better than the manga.

I am not talking about an anime that doesn't stay faithful to the source material (such cases are more iffy), but for an anime that stays faithful, it will always be better than the manga.

The anime covered the manga in roughly 1-1.5chapters per episode, take a guess.

The anime was near 100% loyal to the manga until the final 2 episodes. The last one being rather atrocious, especially with how badly they screwed up the reveal.
