remember last season, Holo already hinted that, Lawrence already let god's chance slip away from his fingers a few times? All of a sudden this marriage contract reminds me of that... (although back then, he did get the 'chance' she mentioned); However, I think Holo is also taking a gamble at this situation: that, even though Lawrence was betting everything on Holo to solve this issue, she's relying on his eagerness of getting himself out of this sh-thole and get Holo back to his side;

In many episodes we do see that Holo flirted with Lawrence but somehow he bluntly shrugs them off; it's a "hint" for lawrence from holo that 'you need to take me more seriously now'.

ps. when holo mentioned that "oh yea, i do have someone that can cherish me a lot (Amarty) wouldn't she also have thought of the fact that the day of his death will be in a blink of her eye as well, just like lawrence?

She implied that amarty would be easier to seduce - she wants children or atleast 1 child, not a grumpy companion who doesn't see her as a women.. eh.. wolf

I can't help but feel the close up of her signing was just to stir the pot that is her Name on the intertubes, i will call her Horo as well, and i hope so does Mazui

Also , if japanese VA says Horo, her name is Horo, not Holo (like holodeck?) Maybe the voice cast needs to get a grip and learn pronouncing L and R properly.. - Who cares what the script says, translations don't translate the script they translate what is spoken

^I REALLY doubt it. She got information out of Amarty to help Lawrence. When Lawrence and Amarty met up afterwards to talk, Amarty would have given it out someway since that's how he seems to be, and that same attitude would mean he wouldn't have sex with Horo before marriage (although being a young man who's blinded by illusions, that wouldn't really matter).

But they are saying Holo, just not how someone like us would say Holo

ra, ri, ru, re, ro

Its how they say it, and understand it, so I don't see it changing any time soon, its confusing for us yeah, but to their usual audience its fine

Omg, Horo signed the marriage contract? I wonder what she's planning to do. Also wondering who's going to win this duel between Lawrence and Amati.

Very good episode. I'm enjoying this more than the first season. Hoping that Horo would stay by Lawrence's side.

Heh. This ep was more fun than it should have been. Turns out Lawrence isn't a chump, and when Horo isn't with him he can wheel and deal with the best of them. He plays Amarty like a puppet, and uses his resources to craft a fun little plan to ruin him. He even retains his humility and keeps his cool around Mark.

But Horo is just painful to watch now. Seriously, I've lost all respect for her character. She's probably pissed off at Lawrence, rather than realizing all the mistakes she's been making herself.

I am amused by everyone's comments in this thread about how Lawrence doesn't take her flirting seriously and "brushes her off". She behaves just as badly when he flirts with her. She could stop treating it like a game, and just do what she did in episode 1-4 (ie, jump into his bed). She's acting like she doesn't know what she wants from him anymore, and he's taking it so slowly that he's falling in love with her.

She signed it because Amati made her do it. It took a lot out of Amati to get her to do it, which is why he's exhausted and drinking in the pub afterwards. It's a little clearer in the novels, but the gist of it is that Amati wanted to make sure that Lawrence knows he's about to lose by getting Horo to "do the impossible".

Regardless of "how" she was made to actually sign the certificate, the fact that she told the innkeeper to give it to Lawrence was a real facepalm moment. Obviously, she wanted Lawrence to get angry and storm upstairs to confront her. But why bother? If he was that far into the inn, it's because he wanted to meet with her already (why else would he go there?).

Worse, having someone else pass such a certificate to him is a sign that she doesn't WANT to talk to him directly. His first instinct wouldn't be to run upstairs - what's the point if she just told him everything she wants to say indirectly? She's just lucky that Lawrence did get angry enough to confront someone about the certificate - too bad it was Amati :)

Good episode... Lots of talking about strategy and the like, but it wasn't hard to follow. Lawrence better be able to pull off something to keep from "losing"...

Still irritated about Horo! I'm kind of happy I didn't have to see her much in this episode - that probably would've been irritating, seeing as how much she's overreacting. It doesn't seem like she's just doing it as a trick to help Lawrence beat Amarty, so hopefully, at the end of all this, we won't just hear her say, "Oh, yeah, just kidding about everything! I was on your side all along, Lawrence, hoho~". ._.

This was a really great episode.

It took me time to understand everything that happened in that episode, but now I'm pretty sure I understand Lawrence bet.

So Holo gave him a challenge. She gave him precious information by giving him Armathy financial status, but she signed at the same time the wedding contract. By that, she want to test him. To see were he's ready to go to get her.

Lawrence deal with Amarthy seem complicated but is simple in the end.
Here's how it goes for those who had trouble understanding it : Lawrence will receive 500 thorenis for the same value of pyrite of the day the deal was made. In the end, whatever happens, Lawrence will receive 500 thorenis. Why did he chose to sell him the value of 500 thorenis in pyrite? Because it was the best Armathy could buy and he knew it because of the information Holo tricked out of him.

But where it get interresting is about the conclusion of the deal. Let's use fictionnal number : the day the deal was made, 1g of pyrite valued 100 thorenis, so Lawrence must give him the next day 5g of pyrite. Now there's three possibility : the price raise up, the price stay the same or the price drop. If for exemple, the price of the pyrite the next day was 1g for 150 thorenis, Lawrence would have made a loss of 250 thorenis since he got 500 thorenis for something that valued now 750 thorenis. So what Lawrence is aiming at is droping the pyrite price.

About the deal with Mark, I had trouble understanding why he refused, but rethinking about it, he had good reason. As a merchant of the city, people seeing him gambling his money on an easy commerce that isn't his trading type would bring him bad opinion. Since trading at that time was all based on the relation, doing that would ruin all those connection he builded up during all those years. But he did give him a crucial information about the alchemist. And he will in the end circulate that rumor. If all goes well, the price of the pyrite should indeed fall and he would win his bet.

It's a really risky bet all based on the action of the other merchant, but if it work, he will have won his duel against Amarthy. It's also what Holo would have wanted him to do.

Anyway, this episode was kinda complicate, but really hyped about the next episode.

This duel of wits is really interesting and reminds me why I enjoyed the first season so much. Especially liked the revelation about the alchemists, I wonder how this is going to turn out. Certainly I'm not the only one who felt that Holo betrayed Lawrence in this episode.

I understand that she's challenging him; however, I don't think relationships are something that should be challenged deliberately. It's one thing if an outside difficulty arises (such as in season one), but to essentially say "prove to me that you love me"... I just don't agree with that. They shouldn't have to/need to "prove" it. You shouldn't try to force someone to fight for you. That's the same as pushing them away, as far as I'm concerned.

Major respect to Lawrence for taking it in stride. His role with Holo has reversed, with him being the more mature one in this situation.

The economics portion of the show is as interesting (and accurate) as usual.

Actually, I do believe the currency they were dealing with was Trelli silver coins. You're absolutely on point though, otherwise. The deal with Mark can be summarized with one word: Honor. Mark's honor as a town merchant against the honor that Lawrence is keeping by trying to "win" back Holo.

I think that Holo actually helped Lawrence in a way - by telling him Amanty's assets. That's a huge plus for Lawrence. Not giving up hope on Holo just yet.

This was a pretty complex episode, though, with subs - I had to rewind a few times, even with a small economics background.
