Why are people bringing up Takezo/Musashi? He is a rough and tumble kind of guy who wins with cunning and brute strength. He isn't anywhere near the swordsman that Kenshin Himura is.

Why Musashi? Because other choices are too obvious.

wait so people in SAO can actually dodge bullets, defy gravity an so on? why do they even bother playing videogames?
even if they could Kirito is far from being either the strongest or most skilled swordman in anime

Well we've only seen Kirito accomplish such a feat so far, but apparently, yes.

To be fair, you can't expect a man to dodge a blade he can't even see.

I will acknowledge Kirito during the first season since he does training. In contrary he seems really cheated during The Phantom Bullet Arc.

For the main question now.

Guts is clearly a first class swordman even if he looks more like a butcher in general. The Dragon Slayer isn't really a sword besides that.

So i think Kenshin and Saito are the best. They are realistic except for Kenshin last techniques.
Outsiders : Yomi from Ga-Rei zero and Shiryu from Ikkitousen.

Kirito's my favorite "swordsman" but since he's a just a VR swordsman....my vote goes to Kenshin Himura. Kenshin has mad skills....and being able to defeat so many men without even killing them....plus the whole reverse-blade thing....that's insanity. lol

It is hard to say with absolute certainty who is the best, given that many Anime universes do not overlap, and it is particularly hard to consider those who possess magical fighting abilities against those who don't.

I just wanted give some input on the whole Himura Kenshin discussion (which got far too long, and I will not re-post here)

If we are to consider the best swordsman in the anime as they were shown by the Kyoto Arc, then Soujiro and Shishio would definitely rank above Kenshin in terms of raw ability. If we are to consider potential, or match them in their prime, Kenshin would then have a clear, rather large advantage. Here is a quick breakdown:

1) Kendo (Sword Training) requires constant practice and focused training. By the time the Kyoto Arc took place, Kenshin had not been in good practice for 10+ years, while both Shishio and Soujiro appear to be in their best fighting forms.

2) Kendo is a martial art that intents to defeat an enemy by killing. Its movements are based on that outcome, and in order to change that Kenshin must hold back, or change the way his attacks are performed, ultimately either slowing him down or decaying it in terms of power and efficacy.

3) The fact that Kenshin's Katana has the sharpened blade on the opposite side of a normal Katana further delays one of his most used and powrfull stances, where the Katana is quickly drawn from its sheath.

4) Although Shishio's injuries are unfavorable in long fights, he has stated that, because of them, his body temperature is far higher than average and this allows him to move faster than humans ordinarily can.

All that said, Hiko Seijuurou appears to be the very best out of everyone. His eremite nature allows him a much higher level of concentration and practice, free from the distractions the others are exposed to. Also, Saito seems to have been the only one who were a match to Kenshin during their prime, and it was stated the there was never a clear winner from their matches.

I think a lot of people are thinking of just MAIN characters.

At least, I was because they're more memorable for me.

Yes, that's true. But people forget about that when they talk about Kenshin, I think he is unbeatable. He can adapt so easily to every situation.

Video games are a shitty indicator of swordsmanship though because:

A) Strength is factored by a statistic rather actual real life strength

B) Games have their own physics engine

C) Swords are actually heavy and a real sword would probably be harder to control than a flimsy lightsaber

Yasuri Shichika is by far the best I've seen in anime, but as Azure noted, calling that style of swordfighting "swordsmanship" is dubious.

Still, most swordsmen couldn't do much if their sword breaks. I could even imagine a sword like Yoru breaking when pitted against Kyoutoryuu.

I don't know too much about Sword Art Online seeing as I've only seen the Anime, but from what I gather, stats don't determine weapon weight. Feel free to correct me if it says otherwise in the Light Novels though.

actually, i think it is kurosaki ichigo because :
1- only shinigami and hollows can see him
2- damn, he is a shinigami, a hollow , a quincy , a visard , a fullbringer..
3- he is sooooo fast (shunpo)
4- he reached the top of strenght of shinigami (MUGETSU) and hollow (VASTO LORDE)

From anime, probably Kenshin Himura and Yasuri Shichika (if you can call that swordfighting), maybe Shichika's sister even more.

IRL is Musashi Miyamoto most likely.

From video games, not sure. Seen too much swordmasters in game I don't even know.

This is all technique, btw. Not strength.

My Argonian in Skyrim (called Skrillex because, why not?) is the best swordsman in video game history.

After him it's my orc called Skrillex in Morrowind

Mugen and Kenshin

Some of these other choices are horrible. None of these characters most people are listing have actual skill. Swinging your sword once and having supernatural shit come out of it? No.. Swinging your sword like baseball bats is a big no either which is why no bleach character should be listed here.

If someone uses a sword as a main weapon then it's a swordsman. I agree at some degree with Bleach characters since most of them don't even use the sword to fight (i.e. Kurotsuchi Mayuri) but others are pretty skilled with it (Zaraki Kenpachi).

Just gonna ignore Ichigo training relentlessly with only his sword skills for weeks and months on end huh? XD keep your bias out of this please.

As other member said. Himura Kenshin. Maybe he doesn't have the amazing powers of other anime characters but in the setting in which he is, he is, by far, the best swordman.

Guts from Berserk has the most power

I'm thinking of 2. And that's Dracule Mihawk and Roronoa Zoro both from One Piece. I can't say Ichigo or any other character from bleach since their swords have their own powers too so for me Mihawk and Zoro are the best because they are pure swordsman.

Mihawk isn't even that good of a swordsman there are countless swordsman that are far faster or far stronger almost any character from bleach could beat him (I dint care that zanpakto have special power the green blast of energy that mihawk uses is identical to getsuga tensho) so he isn't even actually a pure swordsman
