I still don't get what the story is all about. So far, it's been one random things to another and then back to mystery of Caiman's head.

It says "hajimari" in the beginning after OP, can I assume all of this is prologue so far?
It's about a bunch of weirdos living in a weird world getting into weird adventures. The things aren't random, they're there to provide depth to the characters and see more of their world. Dorohedoro is less about telling a story and more about character interactions.

Yeah, sort of a prologue.
There was no distinction like that in the manga, though, like "Prologue/Origin/Beginning Arc". I think because it's a finished manga, anime staff decided to call this season a prologue, probably in hopes of 2nd season.

Thanks for the answers, guys. I think it's just uncomfortable to me because there is so much question and not many answers so far. :)

Yeah, seeing it from this point make more sense instead of following the story.

In my review for the manga, I wrote that Dorohedoro is like Tim Burton meets Quentin Tarantino. You have this gothic and macabre setting where violence is the norm. But more importantly, the thing about Taranino's works is that the story itself tends to be pretty basic and the appeal mainly comes from the characters just mucking around.

Also, we're still pretty early into the series. Assuming we get sequels, there'll be more factions being unveiled as we explore more of the world and in turn unravel more about Caiman.

Q is a bit of a genius when it comes to this particular story. Maybe I have a (lot of) bias towards the manga, but it's such a perfectly executed narrative. I've seen people compare this series to the TV show Twin Peaks, which makes a lot of sense. Both revolve around a central mystery (TP=the murder of Laura Palmer, DRHDR=Kaiman's identity) but the majority of the story and it's best moments don't even focus on these mysteries. The enjoyment comes from the storylines that are created from them and how the characters are poised in these worlds and scenarios.

Another great episode.
The best thing about Dorohedoro is, without at doubt, its characters. everyone is so loveable for different reasons, and there aren't really any "bad" or "good" sides. Everyone is morally ambiguous and as the story progresses we get to see where they come from and how they got to be how they are. If you don't fall in love with these characters, you won't find a solid footing to continue progressing this story, tbh, since it's really convoluted, keeps taking detours and takes a looong while to resolve.

Most of the things that may seem random in Dorohedoro are actually building up to something.
Possible slight spoilers ahead.
Night of the living dead episode might have seemed random at first, except we got Nikaidou & Kaiman vs. Noi & Shin confrontation for the first time and learned Nikaidou was a magic user, which is huge. But wait, there is more! Slight spoiler, but zombies will make a comeback in the future, so their existence is actually an important point to learn.
This episode you might have thought Nikaidou's failed attempt to steal Risu from En went nowhere, but in reality: a). Risu is now on his own resurrected and free from En and Risu is an extremely important character, so it is a big deal, b). Slight spoiler, but Nikaidou growing a mushroom on her back as a result of her failed raid is actually a set up for the future. Shin's backstory is not only interesting on it's own, but also establishes him being half magic user, half human hybrid, which will be important on multiple occasions in the future. By the way, feel free to speculate why it actually is important. You already have all the information to answer this particular question, but you still need to put two and two together to figure it out. Nikaidou's kidnapper from the final part of the episode might have seemed like a one off and nothing more, yet his story actually subtly introduced you to the idea that some humans in the Hole hate it and desperately want to become magic users in the magic users' world instead. That idea is actually extremely important and because of the current episode it won't feel like something out of the blue when it's reintroduced in a major way in the future. Also Jonson is actually not a small deal, so his introduction is important. You will learn about his actual role in the story next episode.
Bonus round: black powder shown on occasions in previous episodes is a huge giant enormous deal, Nikaidou killing a smoke dealer is not a one off, but a set up for future events, tiny devils inside magic users' heads are actually far-far from being just useless trivia and so on and so forth. Just take notes of seemingly small things you are introduced to and be patient for pay offs.

If this keeps up I will end up giving this anime 10. There is not even one ep that wouldn't have entertained me from start to finish.

My sentiments exactly. This might be worth a 10 for me as well depending on the story develops. I honestly did not expect to end up liking it this much because I'm not a huge fan of CGI heavy anime. The characters are just fantastic and the setting is also very unique.

Coincidentally we joined MAL in the same month/year and are from the same country. ^^

I'm hope i'm not hyping it too much up for myself, but so far I have no complains. I'm quite surprised how much stuff they manage to put in the eps without them feeling messy or plot to become hard to follow. I'm also liking all the cast so far, even En who I found just weird at first. I'm actually fine with CGI heavy, Orange converted me with Houseki no Kuni.

Oh wow that's some coincidence! :D What are the odds.

Whilst Caiman is feasting on mushrooms, Nikaido is feasting on the human sorcerers of En and his companions, amidst trying to find Cross-Eyed Risu. To think that En's body is compromised of mushrooms, he's essentially a living curse of black smoke. What an irony.

To go into the backstory of Shin was the most interesting, and to be treated as such of a half-bred human and sorcerer, the ways of Hole essentially cause him to lose his sanity. But another way of the doctor and his assistant putting him back to pieces is the way that he controls his magic and leads a life out of the public eye.

The manhole elegy...when rain are the sorcerer's Achilles Heel they died in droves. But those black gemstones from last episode, the distant threat for humans wanting to be converted to sorcerers, and in the setting of Hole, that ain't gonna stop.

lol at the Man hole cover literally says "MAPPA"
we get to see the past of Shin!
Nikaido still having a hard time against Noi
that mushroom dude's powers is kinda powerful and disruptive if left uncontrolled!
5/5.

Just Shin. As you yourself sort of acknowledge later in your post, humans and sorcerers are two different things.

KANLen09 said:

I have no idea where you're getting this from. En's body isn't "comprised of mushrooms"...he's flesh and bone. His smoke allows him to transform what ever it touches into mushrooms. He also isn't a "living curse of black smoke" He just got angry and decided to blast out a ton of smoke to try and transform/kill Nikaido.

KANLen09 said:

No...his father being murdered caused him to seek revenge. His "sanity" isn't really brought into question. He outright says "my families motto is when you're hit, hit back"

What sorcerers that died in droves because of the rain are you talking about?

Caiman cutting off that dude's feet and throwing one for Johnson to fetch killed me. Is he going to be our pet for Hole, same way En has one?

Gotta love the author's odd sense of humour, it's been great every episode. Unconventional done exactly right.

Eh/Shin's backstory was amazing. He's probably got the most well-written character in the show

We don't know what kind of people we truly are until the moment before our deaths.

That's what death is, don't you think?

As a long time fan of the manga, I was nervous about the anime. This episode was excellent, especially with Shin's backstory. The soundtrack fit nicely! I hope that they continue this trend and that the entire series gets animated. My favorite characters have to show up! I'm excited for new fans of the series introduced via the anime. You have a lot to look forward to. :) My only complaint is that I wished the Noi vs. Nikaido fight was a little longer.

Poor Shin :( he went through a lot.

That big roach is very terrifying! >_< also very powerful too, which doesn't help at all x_x

Nikaido is keeping another secret from Caiman it seems... I'm very curious to find out >>;

Shin's backstory has got to be my fave in the show. I love that scene where Kasukabe found him with arms chopped up trying to find where the source of his magic smoke was coming from, it was so badass.

Also, JONSON! One of my favorite characters and mascots of the show
. Not gonna lie, I felt sorry for Jonson's owner when he died, saying he just wanted to escape hole.

Interesting decision to make the flashback of Shin in full 2D. Animation and art was beautiful for that part. Not that I mind the 3D CG, it looks very good. I usually dislike 3D character animation but Mappa has been doing a good job so far. It is also just not immersion breaking if the characters are in 3D all the time. The worst thing is when characters constantly switch between the two styles.

This anime is very interesting so far. I hope that it gets even better.

Shin's violent past in the Hole being connected to Kasukabe and Oku (and a little bit to Nikaido to an extent) was a very interesting detail. With how hostile the En Family is to Kaiman and Nikaido, it'd be really fun if all of them meet together with the Doctor as the neutral party.

Nikaido's on a string of bad luck lately with how things are going for her. Getting soaked in the rain on top of being kidnapped while she's recovering from surgery definitely didn't help her situation.

Johnson's finally here and it's gonna be SHOCKING!

Shins backstory

Risu knows who his killer is ??

Sorcerers don't like the rain in the whole for some reason

Caiman knows nikado is a sorcerer,

Hole residents want to become sorcerers so they kill people and take black balls from them but turns out it was just a false rumour ?

Shin's backstory was dope and did a good job in showing how conflicted the world was back then when it came to sorcerers and humans and how even as a part-regular person, he still got treated like shit and his father got the brute of it too despite being fully human. Plus the episode in general had really good direction and the music is so great, it really does a great job in matching the aesthetics of the show and making it even more spookier in general. Nikaidou when she was younger in Shin's back story was cute when trying to promote and sell her gyoza on the streets.

Another great episode! We got to see Nikaido in action again, but in the end, she got hit by En's mushroom spell; we also got to learn about Shin's past and that he's actually been to the hospital that Caiman works at and I really liked his backstory, but then we got to see Jonson's and his partner kidnaping Nikaido and apparently Jonson's partner has seen Caiman's human face, but unfortunately for Caiman, he wasn't able to learn about the guy that cast the spell on him from Jonson's partner; anyways, definitely excited to see what's next!

Liked how it just took a smack from Noi to calm down that rampaging En. Otherwise they all would have grown mushrooms out of them lol. Still it shows how powerful En is, and that must be the reason Shin follows him faithfully. Though his backstory was as messed up as any other thing in this series, and now I would want to know Noi's as well.

There is much about Nikaido we don't yet, especially about that magic of hers. Though for the time being, atleast Caiman believes she's a sorcerer now.

Also that has to be the fastest pizza delivery ever lol.
