Hi, in your review for Dorohedoro you wrote "status queue" instead of "status quo", otherwise good stuff :)

Hey! It's been quite a bit. How have you been?

Rikiel! Yeah, JoJo part 6 hasn't had the most love put into it, but it could be far worse. I feel bad for fans of something like "Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer" which got royally fucked. By comparison JoJo part 6 isn't too awful, while it hasn't been the highest quality it's been decent (really hoping the Blu-ray releases fix a lot of the issues as I love the voice cast). I am excited to see Rikiel though (even if it won't be as fantastic as it could be), most underrated JoJo fight by far. Kinda wish he looked like this though. Made in Heaven looked pretty interesting from the trailer so that'll be something. Overall, I'm excited for JoJo part 6 to go and wrap up even if it clearly has been plagued with time-crunch issues and problems with Netflix.

Made in Abyss season 2 was fantastic, wasn't it? The whole thing is just such a solid experience. From the animation to the music to the story. What a fantastic season. Faputa's voice actor went above and beyond with her performance. There's a really interesting twitter thread where she talks about her experience voicing the character that I thought was super interesting, she really brought the character to life. Irumyuui's parts were well adapted too, they made the amount of pain clear, and it was heart breaking. Made in Abyss season 2 was just fantastic. (Can't wait for season 3 is 10,000 years).

Watched the Utena Movie. It was enjoyable but I found the series better. The movie had interesting visuals but the characters in the series were just fantastic. Characters like Juri just didn't have enough screentime in the movie to make them stand along their show counterparts at all. Granted the movie was going for a different approach, kinda like the Eva rebuilds almost, and for that I think it succeeded. I liked the allegorical approach the movie took and while I enjoy it, I think I prefer the series and the way the characters play into the overall themes in the series.

You asked about Summertime Rendering last time we talked. It wrapped up and it was good. I will say that the mystery thriller stuff that I was enjoying is dropped about halfway through for it to become more "shounen-y". I wish it remained a mystery thriller but for what it was it was good.

On the other hand, the one I was super worried about ended up being fantastic. Shadow House season 2 was amazing and rectified everything wrong with season 1. The season 1 original stuff wasn't too massive where they couldn't ignore it (for the most part there was an unnecessary final teasing scene) so it was largely ignored. What an interesting and engaging mystery with tons of twists and turns. Really hoping for a third season now.

Bastard sounds like a ton of fun. I'll check it out. Shows where you can just watch wacky over the top shit tend to be an absolute blast, especially around the right people. Thanks for the recommendation.

I've been watching Princess Tutu and I think you would absolutely love it (as I am currently). It's a metanarrative of the Nutcracker and Swan Lake and deals with that incredibly effectively. It works in fairy tale narratives into its plot and analyzes the place characters have in stories. It also uses the romantic era music that ballet is famous for making the soundtrack stand out (I mean it literally has Tchaikovsky music through the whole thing). There are a ton of really interesting things that happen in this story and while I would love to just pour all of them out to you, I don't want to spoil any of it because I think you'd really really enjoy it.

Watching anything interesting from this season? I'm watching a bit but only a few worth really mentioning. Obviously, I'm in love with To Your Eternity season 2. As a manga reader I'm incredibly happy with it. Eminence in Shadow has been fun, watching a reincarnated chuunibyou who's delusions are actually completely true, but he has no idea is great. Obviously, Chainsaw Man has taken the world by storm and shows that animation studios don't need outside investors. Really interested to see if Mappa continues making fully inhouse projects (considering they already announced another fully inhouse project that seems to be the case, but we'll see).

Honestly the biggest surprise this season Bocchi the Rock which is a CGDCT anime about a girl with social anxiety joining a band. I didn't plan to watch it, but I saw a clip-on YouTube and found it really interesting and gave it a shot. I'm super glad I did it takes that generic premise and absolutely runs with it. It's over the top, interesting, fun and each episode has different styles of animation for the gags ranging from claymation to a manga style to a physical board game where a human hand moves around the piece that looks like the main character. I'm surprised at just how much enjoyment I'm getting out of this show.

Oh boy - It's something of a special series for me as it's kind of my whole raison d'etre for entering the anime-verse back in 2016 and remaining as I have. If you ever do end up wading into its world at any point, I'd love to hear your thoughts or reaction regarding it.

Well, the Turbinid Dragon looked decent in the little screentime it got in episode two. Episode two was really good, I just enjoy seeing the group explore the abyss and due to that this episode was very enjoyable for me. I just wish the episodes were longer, I feel like the go by in a minute and always leave me wanting more.

Utena has continued to be great. I finished the Black Rose arc and really enjoyed it. I like how they gave more of a spotlight to side characters and retroactively developed the main characters through these tertiary characters. I thought it was really interesting how Mamiya was just in Souji's head and was almost some sort of way for him to deny his own actions.

I'm now watching the whole arc where Akio is taking people for rides in his car and reigniting them to fight Utena. I loved the two episodes with Ruka and Juri. It developed Juri a ton and in general was an interesting mini-arc. I look forward to seeing Juri's actions in the future with how she's kind of let go of Shiori. Overall, I'm really enjoying it and glad I took your recommendation for this show, it has a ton of style and depth.

I've also been watching a bit from the new season. Yurei Deco immediately caught my eye as well. I knew it was going to be unique at the very least due to it being a Science Saru show, and I haven't been disappointed so far. It's very vibrant and has an interesting world. It's definitely trying to say something, and I look forward to seeing it develop as the season goes on.

Beyond that I've been watching Summertime Render (which is from last season and is continuing into this season) and it has not disappointed me so far. It's been a very intriguing supernatural mystery thriller series and I really hope it sticks the landing (these kind of shows live or die by the ending). Overall, it's been a very enjoyable watch and has managed to keep the tension and stakes going for the entire series (so far).

Shadows House Season 2 is also airing this season and I'm very cautious about it. I love the source material and season 1 has a really mediocre anime original ending. So far season 2 has been able to bring everything back on track, but I have no clue what they are going to do with the stuff they tacked on at the end of season 1 (I mean there was a post credit teaser twist in season 1 that had no correlation to stuff in the manga :/), but I guess only time will tell.

I've also been watching Call of the Night, and while I find the supernatural romance part of it decent, I absolutely love the directing. That's no surprise though as it's directed by the director of the Monogatari series.

Uncle from Another World is another show airing this season and it's way funnier than it should be. I don't exactly know why but every episode has been really funny so far (maybe it's because I love watching terrible isekai and having it presented in this way is fun and unique).

Anyways those are the shows airing this season that really stand out to me. I'll send another message when I finish Utena (which should be soon since I have only nine episodes left).

Edit: I finished the Utena! What a wild ride. I really enjoyed it and found it had a lot of style and a lot to say. The ending reminded me of Evangelion Episodes 25 and 26 where it was more about the thoughts of the characters and left everything on an ambiguous ending. I feel like the ending is one of those things I need to really think about for a while before I can fully formulate my thoughts about it. But yeah I really enjoyed the show, the characters were interesting, the plot was engaging and it was a fun watch.

I'm not really sure I noticed a massive drop in quality from the season (obviously it looks worse than the movie which looked phenomenal) but then again, I saw some CGI creatures in the trailer that... looked very CGI so we'll see. But overall, I'm just incredibly excited to have Made in Abyss back! (The soundtrack is amazing as always).

I started watching Revolutionary Girl Utena on your recommendation and I'm really enjoying it so far. It's incredibly complex in its themes and presents them in an interesting way. I'm currently at the part where the black rose is being used to bring out on the supporting cast so bring out their inner desires and makes them fight the rose bride (and right after that weird episode where Nanami turned into a cow lol). Anyways I've been really enjoying it.

What do you think of Made in Abyss season 2 so far?

I'm a freelance translator and a full-time subtitler.
I studied translation and learned Japanese thinking of working as a Japanese translator, but my language skills are not enough to make a living.

I'm done with uni for quite a while now. It's just work now. I've majored in East Asian Studies, mainly Janan centered.
You work there?
LiarK Jun 1, 2022 9:20 PM
Not really. Uni studies, Japanese studies, lived a year in Japan, came back, work.
I might come back to it, but my time is a bit chaotic.
