That you have to wait for a week for a 20 min anime episode which will sometimes be censored. And when you talk about it, a herd of angry nerds are screaming threw the computer: WATCH IT ON LEGAL STREAMING TO SUPPORT THE INDUSTRY OR YOU AREN'T A TRUE FAN!!!!!!!!

I hate when this happens, it's my problem how I watch my anime
I completely feel your pain. What is the point of watching the show if the boobs are censored? The uncensored one is clearly the superior version.Crunchy and Funi just air those censor versions even thou both are online streaming sites.

I mean, I want to say the intra-fandom hate, but I bet most decently sized fandoms have similar issues. However, I think anime is in a unique spot where it is something that used to be fairly niche, and it has actually suffered from the increase in popularity, both in terms of content and the community. Saying that, the same could be said of video games...

Ah, I have a good answer. Being an anime fan, for most of us, involves consuming foreign media that was originally in a language we don't speak. Therefore, to be able to truly consume the object of our passion in it's purest form, we need to learn an entirely new language, or be satisfied with the equivalent of looking at paintings with mild color-blindness.

That's probably the most frustrating thing that's (mostly) specific to being an anime fan.

Anime really does not distinguish, condemns or separates Erotic content as much as western animation. This gives a false impression that anime fans are perverts.
no way you can talk about porn cartoons in western animation forums

While the movies you listed as "masterpieces" do have may be considered as much by the majority of people who've watched them, but tag absolutely does not guarantee everyone you show that to will like them.Begging for someone to try something may actually hurt more than help the cause.

Now, this may tie into my other statement, and I'm not targeting the op in any way, but the main thing I hate and always will hate is the other fans. Now, I'm not saying I hate every single fan but myself. There's a wide spectrum of fans ranging from nice to tolerable to "holy shit, will you please shut the fuck up"and everything in between. Now that last category can be broken down further. You have your overly passionate fans, which can be fine in small doses. Then you have your aggressively passionate fans. The ones who will straight up force things onto you and might even throw a tantrum if things don't go their way. And again, there's probably some grey area in there, but my problem lies more towards the latter half of that spectrum.

Now, I'm not so blind and oblivious enough not to see this is very clearly a problem with every fanbase, not just anime. And I'm not so arrogant that I think I'm the only one to have these thoughts. This is just something I need to get off my chest every once in awhile. (edited - I suck at typing)

(rant time lol)

I think for the most part, i dont really pay mind to people that are judgmental about anime, most of my extended family probably thinks every animated movie they see a trailer for is a disney movie. its just ignorance, if theyre interested theyre interested if not theyre not. Video games get the same treatment but i feel its come a long way in general acceptance and normalcy than in the past. Literally why look down on peoples hobbies and things they get joy out of ? i dont have anything against people who dont like animated things, maybe they just dont vibe! i dont enjoy general live action unless its really well done so i get it. its the common perception thats silly

Also the common 'cartoons are for kids' bit has always nagged me, because whats wrong with what kids like?? god i lived and breathed on disney classics growing up, still just as in love with pokemon as a was as a kid and many other related things. a lot of the time the stories themselves arent nearly as juvenile as people make them out to be, they just refuse to look past the surface.

Anyway yeah i agree anime is a vast genre like any other media form, stuff aimed for kids, teens, adults and so on, like any other media form lol. and its simply stupid to collectively judge an entire medium that, has so much work put into making because you've decided art and animation has less meaning than a live action would because its not "real people" newsflash "real people" write, draw and voice these things lol.

On a less irritable note what i find to be something that sucks is the inability to read or watch lots of obscure, unknown, unpopular, or old series because no one's translated or brought them over and most likely never will :/

I think it’s to see people, who are approaching the anime community, leave it because of a toxic part of it which always need to give shit on everything or everyone for whatever reason.

- Shounen-only fans. "This anime doesn´t have any good fights, therefore is trash."
- SJWs putting their shit into fandoms. "This girl is too sexualized!", "There´s no LGBT people in this show!" and so on. The worst I have seen is "This character IS (insert sexuality and/or gender), you´re such a bigot/cistrash/homophobic!".
- Rabid shippers. "mY boIS arE cANoN, yoU cAN´t arGUe wiTh mE uwu".
- When your favorite anime receives lot of stupid backlash from people above.
- People pestering voice actors and authors on Twitter/Instagram. I´m looking at you, D.Gray-Man fandom.
- When you really, really like a series and want to find merchandise around, just to find you basically have to order from Japan 90% of time and it´s so damn expensive.
- Your beloved ship/character has almost no doujinshi, fanart and fanfiction.

Those are a few. There are a bunch of others.

Def the inherent idea that it's childish or that youre a 'weeb'
It can definitely stem from a place of like either thinking the viewer is an orientalist and is obsessed with east asian culture, or other people being ignorant and thinking things that arent western are lesser (normally subconsciously)

It really is just another interest and another type of media to consume. I do tend to never talk about unless someone else breaches the topic (ive had a few of my friends ask for recommendations unprompted and me going like allllll out lmfao) or its with my brothers who while not as errr... immersed as i am, respect me to ramble a bit.

People look at you weird when you talk about liking anime. I haven't even told my parents about liking anime for fear of how they (especially my dad) will react. To be clear here, I have been watching anime for 9 years at this point and am a junior in college. It sucks having nobody to talk about the thing I am most passionate about with, but MAL forums have kind of helped with that, so it's not as bad anymore.

The fact that there are still people out there who act is if you need justification for liking something.

Also the people who watched some sensationalist "documentaries" and think that anime is some sort of amalgamation of all that is bad in this world.

It's okay to smirk

Merchandise and figurines are really expensive and that does not include shipping and taxes. I spent a $8 on a keychain that is smaller than the palm of my hand.

Aniplex of America getting your favorite shows and releasing them 2 $100 halfsets after sitting on it for a few months. Like if its not a import or special limited run collectors edition why so expensive?

Good anime like Beastars locked behind Netflix jail so it does not gain as much popularity since it is never simulcasted outside of Japan. Cause a good chunk of the western fanbase at least the ones I've seen on places like ANN or out in real life at conventions are like "Fansubs are evil and killing our industry wah wah wah" "I only watch anime legally on Adult Swim or through Crunchyroll/Funimation". Then when I say I only watch shows not picked up by Crunchyroll fansubbed. They are like "Oh no you are killing the industry with your instant self gratification" it makes me laugh honestly cause I watch legally when I can I'm not going to wait for the slim chance of the anime being licensed or waiting for anime to be released from Netflix jail cause by then its not the in thing anymore once its finally viewable. I like to stay in the loop with new anime to prevent spoilers to things I'm interested in viewing.

One thing that sucks is that people think anime is sexual. Like when they hear "anime", they think about hentai or that it's indecent, but not all anime is like that and they don't understand. Another thing that sucks is that if you're that invested into anime and no one else likes it, then it's hard to talk to people.

Trying to explain to my parents anime is not just for kids | Having to sit and try my best to enjoy an anime, even if it is not good. Sometimes I truly question whether I really enjoy anime or not and that is why I try to convince myself anime is superior than every other media. This puts great pressure on me and the thought of me not liking anime puts me in an extreme mental pressure.

The suckiest thing for me is the fear of being judged for it. I only have one person in real life (outside of my family) who knows I like anime and that's only because they also like it and they brought it up to me first.
I hide it from everyone because I'm embarrassed and I hate that I feel that way

Nothing, tbh. It's a great medium in which I've found countless amazing shows, and the fact that I don't care whether or not others perceive me differently for liking anime means there are really no downsides. Yes, there's toxic fans in the community, but that's literally every community. I guess you could call that a "downside", but that's simply an inescapable facet of life.

And regarding convincing others to watch anime, who cares? If they're not interested, so be it. That's their choice, so think a big part of how much interest others take in your hobbies has to do with your own attitude towards it.

Like I said, I'm scared of being judged about it.
I'm honestly that way about the kind of movies, books and tv shows I like as well unless they're something very mainstream and I know that people won't think I'm weird for liking it. I've kind of always been that way about my personal interests and preferences, I'm just scared people will disapprove or think less of me for what I like. Anime is just especially embarrassing for some reason and I don't want to be teased about it. The worst part is that my friends are all such lovely people I'm sure they would accept it right away but I can't bring myself to tell them.

Very rare to find people with the same tastes because anime is too large of a medium. It's like generalizing movies, video games, music, ect. No one just likes all of it in general. That would be silly.

While it has increased in popularity a bit in recent years, I suppose that anime is still considered outside the mainstream, and thus people find it weird mostly because they don't really know what it is. I am therefore a bit worried about all the criticism I might receive if I revealed on Facebook for example (where my account is under my real name) that I like anime. It is also for this reason that I don't have any anime-related clothing.

Another thing that sucks is a limited amount of affordable merchandise available for shows I like. I mostly see stuff for Naruto, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and My Hero Academia, none of which really interest me.

I hate the fact that most people base their opinion on anime based on generic shounen anime. These are most of the time sexist / extremely poorly written. Think about anime like these:

- attack on titan

- food wars

etcetera.
