Having to convince your friends that anime, while it is anime is not simply a cartoon and is worth watching. You beg and you plead for them to take a look at such masterpieces as A Silent Voice, Grave of the Fireflies, or Perfect Blue, and it’s like begging someone to give up their firstborn child.

They’ll simper and say “But cartoons are for children”, while you struggle to explain how you definitely shouldn’t let a kid watch Perfect Blue because it is terrifying. Grave of the Fireflies is also a gut punch:

But if getting a normie to watch an animated movie is hard, trying to get them to watch a series is like drawing blood from a stone. Most see one lick of fanservice and climb atop their moral throne, like:

“What is this? DD breast sizes? In <Current Year>, well I have never been so insulted in my life” and pretend like they watch The Transporter movies for the plot. Oh, I’m not even talking about showing them something brilliant but pervy like the excellent kill la kill or Kakegurai.

I’m talking women in spandex in Evangelion, or Code Geass or the Shield Maiden from Goblin Slayer. It’s a hard speed bump for a lot of western people to get over which is disheartening.

I’m not going to deny that there is often unnecessary fanservice in anime, but gosh people getting prudish about it makes me cross, when I’ll see them watching the latest Kinetic Fantasy staring someone like the rock and then ten women who are going to be lining his bedroom floor like soiled underwear at hippy commune. IT’s animated boobies, get a grip.

I guess the main drawback is it is really hard to have the same conversations on the merit of the medium or direction as you would with say, a Del Toro movie. People just don’t take it seriously.

Stereotyping. Generalizing the term anime fan. The idea that because I like some anime, I must be a fan of what is currently popular in anime like Demon Slayer or SNK. Or the idea that I'm inclined to like something just because it's anime when it's the opposite.
Shoot first, think never.

I don't have any more friends LEFT to convince. xD THEY ALL WATCH IT.

I'll just mention two problems with being a fan:

Expenses. You can hardly find ANYTHING anime-related under five bucks. :/

Space. "This manga's great! But it's 35 volumes! Sure, I have room for that!"

Not. :D

-Constant uncertainty over whether the anime they like will get a continuation.
-Long wait between seasons (several years sometimes).
-Dealing with manga readers in general.
-Dealing with lots of toxic fandoms (particularly obsessive shippers and Shounen zealots)
-Struggling to support favorite studios due to overpriced merch, figurines, BDs, etc.
-Mediocre legal streaming services forcing you to put on your pirate hat
-Anime movies rarely getting theatrical releases in the West.
-Constant flood of new anime every season makes it hard to weed out the bad ones and find the gems, while the watchlist just keeps piling up.
I could go on...

I've been watching anime for all of my teen years and nothing bad came with it. I guess it's sucks sometimes to be associate with "degeneracy" but it's whatever.

and manga can be a bit pricey too....

Let's be real here, the hardest part have being an anime fan is when you come to the realization that most of your sexual life is filled with animated and drawn porn.

And yes waiting for movie releases does suck as well.

The worst part is being an anime fan who wants to to have an anime default from time to time on Facebook, but having to deal with "haha your opinion no matter because anime picture xd" troglodytes is always tiresome. I'm glad I don't have to deal with that shit on Twitter.

hmmmm, well, I guess if I had to pick something I guess it would be that anime has such a bad name for most people? Like, if you say you are a fan of anime, most people think of shows like Naruto and eechi stuff and label you accordingly.

Honestly thats not that big of a deal to me, but I guess it is for others. I have a friend who is afraid to tell his parents he watches anime. He's 23. I'm 25 and mine know, after all I've had posters/figures for years now.

Secondly, I would say the price and availability is pretty garbage in the US. There aren't a lot of stores that sell merch for anything but the super popular shows like MHA and Naruto, and having to wait a year+ to watch movies sucks.

What sucks the most about being an anime fan is being associated with 90% of its fandom imo. Like in most cases the only thing that connects us is simply enjoying anime, which stands for anything animated in Japan. Most of the time we don't even like the same shows or have the same perspective about the medium and its demographics. So that is what really sucks. And saying you are an anime fan is pretty broad. I like anime but I don't like ALL kinds of anime, only a select few.

Sure! K-On seems like a boring pick to begin with anyway.
Girls und Panzer is a great one if you are looking for a great tribute to tanks and WW2 in general.
Others I've seen some off that I liked were Mitsudomoe and Non Non Biyori (for comedy).
Mitsudomoe is all over the place and full of energy. While Non Non Biyori is set in a village (not a boring school) and has very nice scenery and relaxing atmosphere.
Also another one is Kemono Friends and has amazing directing (only the first season), but it looks bad and very low budget CGI animation so be warned.

Those are the ones I like so far.

Most of my past dates had a strong dislike towards anime. A american guy named Nick that I've hooked up with in 2012 hated it because of EVA and because of it we avoided the subject like a plage. A really nice guy from New Jersey despised it but I conviced him to watch SAO and SNK (all of which he rated as a 6/10 and 3/10 respectively) and even convinced him to buy the SAO: Progressive Novels because of how much he loved Asuna and even though he was annoiyed by Kirito he said that he stood up till 4AM reading and loving it.

Outside of compatibility problems and annoying fujos I can't complain about it tho!

It's popular enough here that almost everyone knows what it is so I never really had to deal with weird looks or "oh my god, why are you watching that at x age".

Only thing that really sucks for me is the price once you start to actually want blu-rays, collectible, figurines, etc. It's crazy how much it costs, but I guess it's the same for any hobby once you really get into it.

The sheer amount of anime that I plan to watch.
I want to enjoy the shows, but at the same time I kind of hope they are bad to just finish watching everything.

The fact that I have many friends and family members that enjoy anime, but our tastes are nearly completely different.
The only reason I'm still watching Hellsing Ultimate is because I'm doing so with my brother.
I might have to keep watching Re:Zero just to have more of a conversation with friends.

The social perspective of anime fans that they're nerdy geeks. And ladies should avoid said fans at all costs. Literally, I go tell any chick I like anime and they instantly turn off. It's a .00000000000000000000000000000000000000001% chance you'll find any girl out there who likes anime that's single. Wear a MHA shirt in public and get laughed at or be thought of by others as having autism.

The over hyping and the fandoms. I didn’t watch Konosuba or Re:Zero up until recently because I absolutely despised the “cringe” surrounding them. I goddam love those shows. It’s such a shame that I let myself have that mindset, but at the same time when it’s constantly being thrown in your face and all you see is “Loli witch is waifu” and “Rem is best gurl”... you kinda start to get annoyed. The only bright side is that I didn’t have to wait 3-4 years for a sequel lmao

I stopped giving a shit about people's views on anime when I became an adult, but it still frustrated me as a high schooler how people just thought anime was for kids or losers that liked to perv on Sailor Moon-like shows. Shit was annoying.

Also, on the other end of the spectrum, anime fans that go way too far. You're free to love anime, but you ain't free to get pissed off when your favorite VA gets into a relationship, you creepy lil shit.

In my experience, is about anime taste, because so many times I heard the typical "youu need to watch this because everyone watched it and it's popular" obviously I'm looking at titles such as FMAB, SNK, Dragon Ball, Jojo, Fate, One Piece, Kimetsu no Yaiba, etc. I heard so many times and now it's boring and to be honest, it drops my interest in those "mainstream" shows. In the other when you have that taste of watching animes that everyone doesn't care about, it's hard to find someone to talk about that show, my great example is Precure, Senki Zesshou Symphogear, Aikatsu and Pripara, where I live there is no one that watched those show that I love so much, they only care for the again "mainstream" so it's painful but at the same time hard.

I feel your pain on a spiritual level.

And this problem is even worst here cuz everyone around me is religious to some degree so the first even mention of sex, nudity or sometimes even just bikinis are a big no no and they drop the show as if it's supporting satan or something.

And that's talking about straight relationship, try to imagine the hell of suggesting an LGBT+ anime (keep in mind it's a very big sin to be LGBT+ in my religion)

Easily... This.

I think it comes from people who are insecure about liking anime so they want to "fix the medium" because they think if anime was normie friendly people won't judge them anymore for liking it.

The only drawback for me is I know only a handful of people who like anime and watch somewhat regularly.
Unfortunately most of them doesn't really share my taste or are fixated on a single franchise - so I am basically left with one or two people to talk about shows we both like.

Other than that I am afraid I won't live long enough to see the day my ptw list is emtpy -.-
