Upscaling looks like shit, so none

True problem is alot are hand drawn and have defects, so would require frame by frame rework being done on the digital copy.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of the first episodes of One Piece in 720p or 1080p

You should see the test before even saying something like that... and compare it to the original..

if this is true it will be all over the news right now that upscaling will have no quality loss like blurring

It's been trending 2nd place this week on github, only days after the project start.

I say it's getting big, and will probably, as you said it, be all over the news quite soon.

Uploaded the first Episode of Death Note as a test: (removed link so mods don't have to)
Warpsharp much? Looks like an overfiltered upscale (not a good thing).

Upscaling is bad, don't ever try it.

Some old anime would look good in HD. They shouldn't try with early computer anime though.

When it comes to DVDs, I still prefer to watch them on a 27" CRT as long as it's a TV show or OVA in 4:3, too.

Man you are missing out, they look wonderful on my 30" LED TV, run through my PS3. Its strange though, I had to turn off some of the upscaling options to get rid of the artifacts. But if I run the same show in my DVD player, it has the same artifacts as the upscaled option on the ps3. wierd.

Missing out? CRTs are the kings of 4:3 SD.

Same with older video games. CRTs show the best picture and color accuracy for SD content.

Air does have at least 720p out there; I think it's one of those "backgrounds worth 1080p, everything else just 720p" shows. Princess Tutu might look all right, but Full Moon was done cheaply enough as it is -- higher resolutions would just show off flaws even worse.

Of course, with old video games, it's not just about picture/color accuracy. The process of sending a low-res signal to an HD screen introduces lag between controller inputs and onscreen execution. It's manageable with some types of games like RPGs, but detrimental to platformers, fighters, and most other genres.

Working_Designs is dead on, the best way to watch anything 4:3 SD if you want an accurate representation of the source material is going to be on a CRT with component input, made circa the early 2000's.
I do keep a 27" Samsung "flat" CRT from 2003 around, primarily for old video games. I haven't really considered going back to it for component-input DVD watching though, as I've had good enough results with either component input from the DVD player or HDMI upscaling from the Blu-Ray player to my 32" LCD. Then again, it doesn't help that the 2003-era DVD player is showing its age in the form of disc loading issues... at this point, its main use is to feed the 5.1 sound system that came with it.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts.

Kodomo no Omocha, 100%. I'd love to see high quality Kodocha. Slayers is a good candidate too, but I think it aged pretty well.
