I believe I have completed the challenge

I am upto date with 10 of them and the other 15 are completed.

Or does this challenge not let the ongoing ones not count unless its 31st December 2015?

If you are up to date with all your ongoing one and the rest are completed, yes you have finished! Congratulations :D Remember to fill out the form in the sign ups thread so I can add you to the list.

Thanks :D
I have filled the form already.

Question for all, what's the best manga you've read for this challenge? Still have to choose the challenge participant entry, and now that the challenge has progressed nicely, there should be more good pickings.

Zankoku na Kami ga Shihai suru (A Cruel God Reigns) was very good. Though, it was very unsettling as it deals with teen sexual abuse and abuse recovery. In a much more realistic way then a lot of other titles of its type. I'm glad I read it but I think I need to read some fluff after it to bring me back up.

So far it's Dororo. Tezuka always delivers <3.
I probably regret this post by now.

For me it'd be Haruka na Machi e, but I agree with Brand that A Cruel God Reigns was also pretty good too.

I guess my favorite so far is A Lollipop or a Bullet. There was a certain feeling of melancholy that I loved about it.

My second favorite is The Flowers of Evil (manhwa). It was kind of like a train wreck.

Although I plan to reread Olimpos and that's my one of my favorites too. It's so pretty.

So far , it's Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou . If there is something to pick if you feel like having a "soft and calm" read , then it's the way to go .

Then after , it would be Gunslinger Girl (I'm actually gratefull to this challenge to made me read it , and not go with the anime who seems to hold a lot less in it and stop halfway) . lot's of interesting thing in it , plus the fact that it is settle entirely in Italy and Sicilia make it a very original read , a distinctive manga in my opinion .

(well it's not helpfull for you corwin_r I guess , since you already have them on your lists it seems , sorry )

In fact , I'll begin to search in other challengers list too . I still need to find a "non-romantic relationship manga" to my taste and a "compilation by different authors" .
Considering those compilation by the way , I'm having some hard time trying to find some . Most of the time , they are either still ongoing or not translated/not findable . (There is "Japan as Viewed by 17 Creators" , but for some reason I would like something else) . Can someone help me with this problem ?

Hey , tsuyokunaru , I'm sure you saw the new official anime challenge , not to mention the JV and other "unofficial" ones blossoming around...
So , how does it feel to be the source and perpetrator of all this ? ^^

(tsuyokunaru also , I decided to drop "Hoshi no Samidare" after 3 volumes , it wasn't to my taste sadly . I'm surprised it wasn't adaptated in anime though , it seems to me it would be a lot better like it , more adaptated for that somehow )

I'll have to get back to you on that, though I've enjoyed everything I've read so far, nothing has become "favorite" material yet, but I'm progressing slowly.

It's OK. It seems our taste is really not that similar and that's fine. I'm also surprised it was never adapted into anime, but I've made my peace with it and in a way I feel it's for the best.

I've seen only 2 challenges (an anime challenge in a club that someone linked me to, not sure if this is the "official" one?) and a BL one that someone organized but I don't know about JV's or others.

I'm glad I inspired other people to create their own challenges and after this response I really would like to continue it in subsequent years with some changes to keep it fresh. It's been pretty exciting so far!

I considered reading that at some point, but the tags threw me off at that time as I was looking for something more lighthearted to read. From the looks of it, it's currently the top contender for the picking, as the scans are also great.

I've yet to read Dororo, and Tezuka never fails to deliver, but I've already read Ayako for this challenge, and would like to stick with one author per entry if possible. Thanks for the general recommendation though, it will probably be the next Tezuka manga I'll read.

@Dullboy and Shiniya
Both YKK and Eden are in my favourites, couldn't give out a better recommendation myself :P. Considered reading Gunslinger Girl after watching the anime, maybe I'll read it as an entry for another category if there is place to fit it in.

Tokyo Ghoul is a debut manga, isn't it?

Also, any good manga with children in it? and food?

Edit: Scratch manga with children. I think I'll go with Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai!
Edit 2: I think I'll just go with Bambino!. Looks quite interesting.

Go with Ode to Kirihito or Adolf, they are not too long (you can read each in one or two afternoons) and are among the best of his works.

While Pluto is based on Astro Boy I wouldn't consider it a Tezuka work. I would go with Ode to Kirihito.

I have a question would Yankee-kun to Megane-chan count for the "...manga that has a main character of gender opposite to the demographic?"

I also need suggestions for a prototype manga. I've read a few (like Hellsing and One Piece) but I can't think of any and that isn't a tag on MU.

Looking for a participant recommendation. Please don't recommend anything already on my reading or completed list, or any of the following (because I'm doing them for the competition for other categories):

Outlanders
Lovely Complex
Blade of the Immortal
One Piece: Romance Dawn
Densha Otoko
Claymore
Hana to Akuma
Sumomomo Momomo
Eden! It's an Endless World
One Outs
Monster
Tripeace
My Girl
Ichinensei ni Nachattara
Kitchen Princess
Oretama
Mushi to Medama to Teddy Bear
Transfer Student Storm Bringer

I'd prefer someone recommend me something I have not heard of, but any recommendation is welcome. I would prefer a completed work though, and preferably something under 10 volumes long.

I'm sure you have heard of it but it looks like something you might like from looking at your list, Paradise Kiss.

It is only 5 volumes long. This is one of my all time favorite manga ever. Really, it was the manga that really kicked me into my manga reading habit. It is also the only manga that ever made me cry.

Does it have a different ending than the anime? Because I already saw the anime.

Since you seem like someone who enjoys comfy&cute more than other things, I recommend you Kabu no Isaki (from the author of YKK), and Bonnouji - a nice SoL romance, with nice characters and a nice atmosphere that probably won't end up in your favourites, but you'll enjoy reading it nonetheless.

Yankee-kun does count! It's hard to say who's the real main character, but I count them both so, it's acceptable.

As for prototype manga you can check out DOGS which is a volume preceding Dogs: Bullets and Carnage. Someone mentioned NOiSE which is a prototype for Blame! and there's also Medaka Box, Beelzebub, Naruto, Death Note etc, which had one shots published before becoming long running series. Sorry for the lack of links, I'm in a bit of a hurry.

I can't believe there are actually debates about Kuroko no Basket vs Slam Dunk. I liked Kuroko no Basket very much but after finishing Slam Dunk, I can't help thinking Kuroko is actually just a poor version of Slam Dunk.

In my opinion:
- The humors are funnier.
- The characters are much more interesting.
- The rivalry between Sakuragi and Rukawa is one of the best.
- The realism makes the match much more intense.

I kinda feel like I've been cheating at this by reading such short series. Oh well I plan to do this at least 3 times anyway. I've definitely gotta try to read a long series for at least one of the challenges for this first go though.

Well since I'm going at the challenge for a 2nd time, I'll post my thoughts on the manga I'm reading from time to time. :3

>Category: Read a manga that focuses on non-romantic relationships.

>Rainbow:

Progress: 80 of 125(235) chapters completed.
Score: 2/5 (about to be dropped).

What should have been colorful (as the name suggests), ironically portrays its characters as mostly black and white. Rainbow describes the ups and downs in the life of our six protagonists and as such, is merely a slice of life drama story based on the background of a post WWII Japan. Without going into further details, I must say I am pretty disappointed with how things have turned out already. My main complaint with the manga is the stark contrast in the writings behind the protags and the antagonists. Rainbow has some of the ‘worst’ antagonists I’ve seen/read for some time. ‘Worst’ in the sense that they are so awfully written and lack any sort of motive/desire behind their actions aka they are bad coz they are bad. Hence, each antagonist is pretty much a copycat of another and are basically laughably sad. The saving grace is the portrayal of the brotherhood existing between the protags and I’m perplexed as to how there could be such a gulf between the characterization of the two factions, to the point it just appears childish at times.

The art pretty much compliments my issues with the storytelling. Yet again, there seems to be a conscious effort to make the villains look more grotesque, with the facial expressions at times appearing as ridiculous as to that of the Umineko manga (yeah it’s that awful). Else, it’s pretty much okay for the most part.

Overall, Rainbow has its good moments, but gets marred often with the other issues. Even at this stage, my interest in this manga has been pretty much next to nothing. And as much as I dislike it, I guess it won’t do any harm if anyone here is interested to read it, at least the first few volumes. My only advice is not to go with much expectations and if you just ignore the antagonists, you’ll probably like it way more than me.

So this has been pretty much a bumpy start. o_o
Does anyone have any recs on this category?

Nice , I like it and I hope you'll post more little reviews like this here (you convinced me to not read Rainbow by the way , thanks ^^) .
Also , I think I'll read Lone Wolf & Cub (after seeing it on your challenge list) , or at least I'll give it a shot .

Skyzblue said:

Actually I'm searching for some too , it's surprisingly not as easy to find as I thought...

I remember that there was this idea for the challenge , when it wasn't realised yet , of an entry that would said to make a review for a manga that we completed , and I found the idea very cool back then .
I was planning to do one for Gunslinger Girl , but I kind of lost the will after finishing it (mostly because I'm not really confident in my ability to do good ones , especially in english language) . If people wish or feel like doing reviews after completing a manga , It would be nice to share it here , so that we could discuss them in a nice ambiance and chill way , if I may say .
Maybe I'll change my mind and do one too , as a personal goal for the challenge ^^ .

I'll start reading "Beck" also , for the "more than a 8,5 rating" , and I was I wondering if some other people plan to do it too or have already read it . To have some thought on it (to be true , the fact that it's 34 volumes long scare me a little) .
