| A lot of people derive their scaling from the scores in general. They learn to "feel" the rating, so to speak. When you see a lot of anime with, say, score of 6.something, you can say, oh, so that's what they mean a 6 rating means. Then you watch some 9 rating shows and you say the same thing about the rating of 9.something. Basically, you watch a lot of anime and you find that you like or dislike some shows with a certain rating, but you come to grasp the general idea of what those ratings are. That's why many people use the 5-10 scale, where 10 represents really well enjoyed, or anime with little flaws, 9 is really really good stuff with a medium flaw that makes it not get a 10, 8 is generally okay, enjoyable, 7 is pretty lacking in some aspects, but still okay, 6 is borderline bad, and 5 is just "why did I watch this, it's really bad". Basically, when you observe average ratings, and then try to make sense of them, you naturally start rating that way. That's why I'd find it weird for somebody to have an average of 4. I have an average of almost 8, but that's because I actually rarely rate something I didn't really like, so it's biased towards "greatness". |

| Well they probably don't hate anime as much as they hate seeing the same old repeated story lines and tropes with no new twists. Diamonds are rare these days so I can see why some people would have a low overall score. I honestly think if a person rarely rates over a 6 that maybe they should find another hobby cause anime just isn't their thing anymore and its time to move on. |

| I don't think so. You can enjoy an anime and acknowledge its flaws. For example, I gave Fairy Tail a 5 for its deus ex machina, repetitive storylines, and generic characters, but I love watching the show! It's especially good after watching something serious. I can just turn off my brain and enjoy battle sequences and friendship speeches. |

| I used to go through my list by calibrating the scores against a certain criteria. I have 600 entries so now the process is just cumbersome to me. Once I complete a show, I never look back at the rating as it's still fresh in my mind. I know people with average scores less than 5 but there are still just as passionate as us folk who are more lenient with our rating scale. They have a tendency to dislike more stuff, that's all. I'm not actively seeking out bad shows to watch, who does that? Time is short, spend it wisely. |
