A very weird episode, and I didn't quite like it.

Probably the best things in this anime are the OP and the ED. The art is really bad, and most of the stories are ok. It definitely could be better. The first story was just as weird as the second one, I don't know what else to think about them. I wanted to see a proper ending of the second story, and maybe the first one too.

My opinion on this episode seems to be diametrically opposed to the general consensus in that I really liked the first story and didn't really care for the second.

I'd argue that Used Record was more effective in the anime than the manga for one simple reason: sound. Being able to hear the recording added an otherworldly atmosphere to the story that simply wasn't there in the manga version. I also thought that the exposition dump by the jazz bar guy was a bit too much to swallow and think that cutting it down was the correct directive decision to make. I did miss Ogawa's corpse "singing" the song to Nakayama, making her think that she was still alive, but I it's ultimately a pretty minor gripe.

On the other hand The Town Without Streets was possibly an even greater unfocused mess than the original manga. At 70 pages long, there was bound to be some things cut out/be at a faster pace in order for the one shot to fit into 16 minutes. The problem is that none of the ideas really flow well with one another and generally lack a message (except perhaps the lack privacy being commentary on CCTV systems if that was the intent). The censoring was odd to see as well, made me wonder why it's okay to show a character slitting their throat vs disemboweled characters and nudity. Painfully average overall

Gave this a 4.5/5, but it probably deserves a 4/5 if I wasn't being so generous.

i just came here because i noticed a miles davis reference in the "Used Record" part of the episode

it's on the top left, you can barely make out the text "miles davis". the album is called "kind of blue" if you're interested, it's a jazz classic and i recommend you check it out if you're into that type of music

there's also multiple other records which i recognize but can't really figure out what they are. i managed to read "mulligan" in the bottom right corner and it turns out it's a reference to the Gerry Mulligan and Thelonious Monk album, "Mulligan Meets Monk"

The song was so eerie in used record, I think that definitely adds something to the story. It's a shame they took away so much content from the story itself, however.

That second story ended so abruptly, and with seemingly no explanation. I think It actually made me enjoy it more in some aspect. Although, an explanation would have been nice, but I guess it's also nice to have to think about the meaning rather than have it spoon fed to me.

The first one had no explanations, I had to quickly find the manga to read it.

The second one felt like it was missing a lot. Her family members are perverts, the guy liked her was a pervert that snuck into her room to whisper shit into her ear, her aunt likes to walk around naked (in the manga). LOL poor girl.

Didn't expect it, but appearently Junji Ito did dive into some artsier territory at some point. Second story was fascinating, but slapping together the Aristotle method and the privacy stuff, just felt like slapping together 2 different stories for the sake of some sort of climax, that the privacy-part of the story would otherwise lack.

That would definetly improve the first segment in my opinion. Sometimes it's better to not explain things, other times it's like this episode. The idea of a record, that makes people obsessed and willing to kill eachother over it, is not that scary of a horror story, cause we are subjected to different forms of gore way too often, meanwhile the backstory seems to have some urban legend potential, especially if the recording can come off as somewhat authentic or uncanny (unfortunately, that wasn''t the case).

After reading the manga version of Used Record I was exited to hear how the anime would make the song sound and I think they did a pretty good job in making it hauntingly beautiful

Both of the stories that were adapted for this episode were kind of interesting in their own way. I'm really glad that I've read them before, so I could understand them better.

In my opinion, I loved the first story because it made me feel uneasy while I was reading the manga and also made me feel curious of how the song would sound like in the anime version. It didn't disappoint, but it was a shame that they didn't tell (completely) the story of Paula Bell.

Regarding the second story... it was interesting, but no more than that, at least for me.

Ehhh I watched that video recently and just to clarify... that scale is refered to the manga (not anime) version of Ito's works and the use of his "curious" narrative structure. Not to mention that the first part of the episode is not fully complete. And to be honest, I think that narrative works better on paper than in a tv show.

The "City without roads" one was pretty good, very oneiric, and so many subtle themes played out in one story.

The record story I felt was better done in the manga, they skipped some stuff and the ending I feel was better done in the manga. I haven't read the second story but it was alright, though I think there were too many concepts for one story.

I love the second story! At least the creativity and originality of it. I will admit that the series so far hasn't been perfectly executed and is 'inferior' to the manga. I am not talking about the endings, the endings are in-line with the Baccano narrative style, so-far there has been no happy ending.. Unless we talk about my man Souichi with his funny shenanigans going through an edgy eighth grade syndrome phase.

By far the creepiest, although it's metaphor-laden, it is by far the most real and terrifying story!

I liked the episode even though things were cut. The first story still worked and showed how obsessive people can get when they're exposed to the cursed recorded.

I really enjoyed the second one. The idea of having no privacy and wearing a mask in order to conceal your identity, even though everyone can still see you, or becoming an exhibitionist since people are watching reminded me of the internet. I did laugh quite a bit when she was with her family at breakfast. The way her father and brother just tried to act cool, even though they were super creeps was hilarious to me.

Even though they didn't show the dream guy being creepy, I thought the episode implied he was a bit of a pervert since the ring box was there and it was mentioned that he was using the Aristotle method on her.

Town of No Roads was just horrifying. Imagine never having any privacy, ever? Of course it would make people go absolutely insane. Hell, the girl's family poking holes in her ceiling and wall was terrifying enough. And perverse.

Here I was ready to see some titties when Town Without Streets started. Better than trying to use a light beam though. Even if the original is kind of a mess I still liked it, so I'm a bit disappointed with how it turned out here. I don't think it'd be so bad to give the longer stories their own devoted episode, rather than try to cut them down, but oh well.

Fun fact, Town Without Streets served as some inspiration for the game Siren. If you've played it then you can probably see where, the Shibito Nest.

Oh yeah, and the Record story was fine. Think they changed it a bit though, can't quite remember. Nothing really major.

Look at facebook, a lot of people are throwing out their privacy for no apparent reason. Some ladies loves this kind attention(the girl`s aunt), other are afraid of but still forced to do it("why are you not publishing new photos on facebook?! You are strange").

World without privacy was probably her nightmare. The killer was probably observing her and as far I can say he breach her dream to find about the boy with a ring and then killed him? Seems plausible, especially because the killer was right there to "help" the girl twice.

For the record, obsession can kill. Something so alluring can dazzle people and turn them into savages.

The excuses the two made even after clearly getting caught was funny. She's so sick of people barging in from everywhere that she just went on naked. They censored her tits. Those lighthouse heads are pretty much the village's surveillance team.

Ito Junji's amazing stories should be on a movie or on a whole series... They would work so much better. Great ideas but poorly done because there's no time to develop the characters properly...

Both stories were pretty bad this episode, as both felt like they were missing a lot of information and were rushed.

The animation also continues to get lazier. About 7:00 minutes into the episode a man looks around the corner after the girl who stole the record, and he just sorta slides around the corner rather than actually make any motion. It's really distracting stuff that takes me out of the show.

that was some killer tunes. Its a pretty straight to the point creepy story though with how this record works you would think a lot more bodies would be around.

The second one was a big ol can of wtf. It makes me wonder if the whole building thing was also her dream since the killer showed up again and the exist was her going back to reality.

The 2nd story can be a metaphor for the internet.
When you join the community, you practically surrender your privacy and identity whether you want to or not. Wearing a mask symbolizes being anonymous in order to not attract attention to yourself.
"Manga readers are annoying, all they do is complain or spoil the anime we discuss in an anime forum.
They should really do their whining at manga forums.
