Wow, seriously didn't expect this! Interesting Yaoi scenes and well not so interesting Yuri. lol I still liked it a lot, but it was to be expected that a lot of people would complain.

Poor Mamoru though! I feel so sad for him ...

It was disgusting... ew :( But it was also interesting... Why good stories like No.6 and Shinsekai Yori must turn into yaoi? :(

Can't agree more,
I dropped no.6 when the rat begin spouting love. What a waste

No.6 originally IS a series of novels sprinkled with ambiguous love between Nezumi and Shion, just as Shinsekai Yori is from a series of novels that features various forms of love and sexual relationships.

Coincidentally, both series are set in a society different from ours - Shinsekai especially, whereas No.6 features more en emotionally stunted protagonist obsessed with revenge [Nezumi] and an emotional leech [Shion]. In the No.6 novels we constantly see Shion unable to progress, UNWILLING to progress without Nezumi, even claiming that a life without him is meaningless. And no, "rat" never "sprouted love" [as he probably never fully realised that himself, he was too afraid of Shion and his deceptive-looking nature]

And the homosexual behaviour in Shinsekai has been explained in the anime itself a few times already [Saki even flashbacks to the explanation for your convenience] When in the childhood, and the teenage age, they will all physically engage in homosexual behavour [as per the scientific/genetic mutations that have had been done to create their society, probably so that females wouldn't get pregnant before the "best possible time" as someone had already said in this thread] Emotionally they will get attached to whomever they like/love [such as Saki loving Shun, and Mamoru loving Maria; although it's obvious Satoru loved Shun too, if you ask me] but they won't engage in heterosexual sex because their genetics have been programmed like that, and the society's code/upbringing embedded that in their minds.

I love how many are dropping this and it's obvious many just looked at the pretty pictures, paying no attention to the story whatsoever. Personally, I have a big problem with animation, no idea what's going on. Is the production team also on another project, what's going on? I'm hoping they will cover as much material as possible, no idea how many novels there are out there..

Never expected the shit storm to be this big, that scene honestly didn't bother me at all and I don't understand why people would actually drop the series over one scene.

Also, out of curiosity, are there any females that are as outraged of Saki and Maria as there are males over Shun and Satoru?

There is absolutely nothing wrong for two boys to be sexually affectionate towards each other in the context of the series. The way the series portrayed is extremely natural and quite conservative.

Also, there are actual tribes that used to have similar sexual practices in the real world.

I don't understand what is the big deal when two boys kiss that generate such hatred towards supposedly "yaoi". Sorry but this is not yaoi.

Then again: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SelectiveSquick

Totally normal reaction.

Agreed with everything you said.

I can't understand how can you guys drop this just because your insecurity of seeing two boys kissing, you are acting like kids.
Anyway, interesting episode as always, I felt so bad for Shun in the last part, but I felt worst for Mamoru, poor boy, I think he has become my favorite.

Not part of them so can't say for sure.
But with the long list of porn including the weirder sub-genre, I'd say they have given up trying to make a big fuss of it and just treat it as "the other group's talking" let it go instead of trying to beat the dead horse as long as nobody is forcing it to them.

LOLOLOLOL at all those dropping the anime because its "gay" and all those saying "I like the yuri but I hate the yaoi" and vice versa. Seriously guys? LOOOOOOOOL

In ancient Greece everyone was bisexual and it was broadly accepted by society, older guys even had the right to choose another man to be his lover, even those who were married, and no one complained because it was a society "rule".
Humans are still animals, if you put a human baby being raised by a wolf, he will behave like one. The only thing making us different is society/rules to control our behavior. Most of times most of people will accept and live by the terms of his world otherwise he will be taken as deviant and excluded. you´ve been eliminated, goodbye, its the jungle law

Shinsekai´s world appreciates homosexuality as much as hetero. If right now our world suffered a great loss and humanity had to be rebuild with the same rules as Shinsekai, "we" the ones born in the "old" era would be somehow conflicted to accept it because we were raised with different beliefs, while our children born in the "new" era would accept it with no hesitation because they were already born learning in a different society. Its called "evolution" guys XD

I dont see why so much hate. People dont have to like things to be able to accept them. Im not a huge fan of yuri, yet I felt no problem at all in watching Maria/Saki´s relationship. It feels natural and appropriate just like Satoru/Shun. Love should be regarded as timeless and universal, no matter the form. All types of love are love you see. We love our family, our friends, our pets. If we have to love a man, a girl or both, it makes no difference, since we will suffer the same and re-joy in the very same way as a hetero/straight couple.

If people decided to be less affected by prejudice, this world would become better and you all would feel better, believe me.
One of my best friends is bisexual. Do I like her less because of that? NO. Because people wont change just because they have a different sexual option. They will still be bad or good just as they always were.
and btw, I dunno if there is someone on this thread that is homo or lesbian, but I do know people in this website that are, and I feel utterly sad that they have to read all this disrespectful prejudiced comments. They could be your brother, your sister, your best friend, dont forget. They´re people, not monsters. "Gays" exist not just in fiction. Its really a pity that most of people refuses to open their minds to a better world.

But, I am really wondering, why people react so strongly on those contents. Is the process of accepting normally that hard?
(I can understand, that people don't like it, but why does it agitate some poele so much, that they have to complain about it and ignore everything else?)

I really don't know. I guess, i will never understand homophobia.

I this stuff was only in the episode for fanservice, I would understand this hate, but this is an early established and well explained part of this story and it's world and i really can't see the problem with this.

I laughed at those who dropped the series for this only episode. You didn't saw this coming? They said it a few episodes ago! Sudden changes? I don't think so, they have 2 years to establish a different relationship. Too many things might have happened (and I wish to know what exactly did).

The gay thing doesn't bother me, I'm only want to find an explanation. The series is still airing, so we could have none or a lot of answers! Also, just look at the numbers. The dropped percent isn't even the 1% of those who keep watching it.

I think the homosexuality has some reason behind it. I mean, only 2 years ago, there were no signs of love between guys-guys/girls-girls, but it seemed to be at least a little "spark" between Saki and Shun (and Satoru? o-O). Now EVERYONE is in love with one of their own gender, except Mamoru <->
And if it continued like this, mankind would eventually vanish.
I'm just speculating, wouldn't mind if there was nor reason behind it though ^w^

just think for 5 minutes why homosexual relationships are encouraged in young teens in a hyper-sexual society and you'll get an answer.

It's taken me this long to realize Mamoru is a man -_-
This was by far my favourite episode. Shun breaking down, the love... pentagon, Mamorus hopeless attempts at getting Maria to notice him, Sakis self contemplation, the opening spiel about teenagers progressing in time, & just the overall atmosphere of this episode will forever be burnt into my mind. The art director and whoever deals with the execution of the storyline are both brilliant!
There was one silly little thing that bothered me though. Does anybody know why Saki covered the mirror with her hands in the beginning? Did that symbolize her rejecting/contemplating her own as well as every bodies societal behavior?
Also, when the most powerful cantus user came to the training class was he using his cantus or was it Shun who used his cantus?

I like the story. Whether I enjoy the homosexual scenes is irrelevant as it's only an aspect of the world, and has a reason behind it.

People seem to lack tolerance. Why would you drop an interesting anime because of a few romance scenes? Unless you had other reasons to not like the show.

Anyways, I enjoyed the episode. Wonder what happened to Shun.

Not too bad. It lacked action but... We need some time to set everything in place before they thrown at us something huge too. It would have felt rushed if they had started right after the time skip with Shun leaving right away. Would have felt out of place and no one would understand. I'm just wondering what happened with Shun and the Priest when they met. Who used his Cantus ? And what was in the Egg ? That's bothering me. I think he didn't want Satoru and the other to know but... I think he really cared for Satoru and that's why he started to cut ties with him. Shun being probably the most intelligent of them all.. I guess he knew what was going on with him. Satoru trying to make him jealous... lol... priceless. His new 'mate' was annoying tho.

The intimate scene don't bother me that much tho. Those who dropped this show were too immature to keep watching it I guess same with those of you watching it just for the Yaoi or the Yuri. Anyway... I doubt we'll see more if Shun leave the village. Saki will probably still hold her relationship with Maria a little but I'm thinking we'll go back to SakixSatoru mostly.

Saki - Nope, still don't like her. Playing around with Maria... Seriously ? Fine with me to relieve Stress but, what I hate is that she doesn't care about Mamoru at all. It's almost as if she's actually trying to hurt him. Maybe she felt better about herself this way. Bullies usually are the one with a problem. Also, doesn't seems to me like she's into Maria that much anyway.

Satoru - Nothing new here. Still liking him a lot. My favourite character. I felt bad for him when Shun broke up with him. Satoru do like Shun. Somehow, I don't want him to be with Saki anymore and would rather see him with Shun but, i guess... That's not going to happen anymore =P

Mamoru - Sounds like we have the third wheel with Maria, Saki and Mamoru Trio ! lol. This episode made light on a lot of thing regarding him tho. I felt like he was left out in the previous episode a lot. (He still is... ) but now, I can blame Saki for being a bitch.

Maria - I don't know... She doesn't seem to notice what's going on around her AT ALL.

Shun - Bye Bye Shun ? That's what I understood. Still lots of thing I don't understand. He's seem to know a lot more than everyone else but... I don't understand what's going on with him at all. He was creepy in the Classroom scene and I wonder what happened between the Priest and him as I said earlier. Lots of thing still without answer. I hope they give up answer soon regarding all that. I doubt they killed him. Seems to me like he made his move before them. I'm guessing he's just going to leave the village but... He doesn't have anywhere to go anymore.

Can't wait for next episode =) I hope for answers!

Although I wasn't into the homosexual scenes in this episode either, it's not like the scenes were explicit or anything...and also, just because it showed up in this episode doesn't mean that the rest of the anime is going to focus on that. This anime is so much more than that. Well I wouldn't know, but I mean seeing all the spoilers from people who've read the actual novel that this anime is based on, I would think that this story had a lot of depth and its demographics probably target more mature people. If you can't tolerate some homosexual scenes and will drop the anime JUST because of it, then it's your loss. I'm pretty sure the novel explains more regarding how their society works...just not so much in the anime?

Anyways, I definitely enjoyed this episode as it was interesting to see the difference in their culture. By the way, although this is kinda random (but somewhat tangential to this topic), I am taking a class on anthropology, and it really made me open my eyes to some things. Like for example, anthropology is about learning and understanding other cultures in the world, and anthropologists don't judge other cultures based on what they believe....I believe that would be called "ethnocentric fallacy." Therefore, the people who believe that the "yaoi" and "yuri" scenes are "way over the top" or "disgusting," you are committing ethnocentric fallacy. Just because it's not part of our cultures/societies, doesn't mean it's wrong. Sorry, I just had to go all academic about this. Some people are just too close-minded.

I'll just ignore the whole Yaoi/Yuri discussion and say that this was a great episode, bringing back and doubling the intrigue of the early episodes about the secrets of their society. It also reshaped the character relations which should create some interesting dynamics later on. After the Queerats war episodes which were so-so to me, this was a strong return to form.

At first I thought that this show's fate was doomed, but it would just be strange if these strange relationships were permanent, and it turned out they weren't after all.
Animation is this episode was really, really irregular. As if every scene had a different guy working on it and they all made the characters older in their own way.
Very promising ending and preview though, so far this has just been strange but it can still go pretty much any direction.
