Your favorite characters - What's the appeal?

I'm curious, what draws you to the characters on your top ten list? Taking a look at mine, I notice that half the characters on my list are very positive and upbeat people, and the other half are cute animals (and one lover of cute animals). Noticing this, I learned something about myself: I like to watch cute, positive things that make me feel better about myself and my life.

Examining your own lists, do you notice any connections or similarities between the characters? What draws you to them? Are they similar to your own personality or are they drastically different? Do they make you think or feel certain things when you watch them on screen?

With male characters, it's usually because they're cool, and inspirational.

With female characters, it's because they're sexy, and cool at the same time.

My current top 10 is composed of female characters only, I like them because they're either cute or waifus.

I used to have maily male characters, I like them becasue of their actions, dialogues and personality.

Depth I guess? Vague, I know, but not one of my favourites is some 2D cardboard cut-out. That's the connection they all have, I think.

I regularly rotate the 10 characters, in total I have about 100 favorite characters by now and it's really hard to summarize them in a few lines since a lot of different characters are in there. I do have an affinity for mature, intelligent/wise and skilled characters in leadership positions, for extremely fun characters, for characters that feel particularly real and well-written with all their flaws, and also for GAR and eccentricity.
I probably regret this post by now.

Zetsubou Sensei, Yang Wenli, Shin Suou - their interesting philosophies on life
Matsumae Ohana, Ashirai Makoto - best waifu material
Mishima Reika - mysterious and beautiful, also i like yellow
Ano Maki - saddest death in bokurano ever
River Nate - cool personality + role in story; he wrapped up everything perfectly
Nomura Miu - my most relatable character ever
Sadami Natsuiri - best actually-mad-scientist character ever, not a show off like okabe, and gets a lot of development unlike the other forgettable ones

I generally like characters that I feel are the most grounded
A faint clap of thunder,
Clouded skies,
Perhaps rain will come.
If so, will you stay here with me?

Even if rain comes or not,
I will stay here,
Together with you.

Not gonna lie, most of them are characters I'd bang. The rest are characters I think would be cool to hang with. Some are characters that are like me in some way. Others are characters that I feel are good characters for their story. A lot of my favorites are men. The only female is obsessed with men. A lot of characters are linked to love/romance/problems with other genders; if they're not canonically linked, I have linked them somehow.

For example, Link has been my husbando since I was in Kindergarten. France is canonically "all about l'amour" except he's deeper than that. Harumi ships people romantically/sexually. Suigetsu is my precious de-shipper. He breaks up potential ships canonically. Matsuka is like the image of abusive relationship victims to me. Yamcha has problems with women and eventually becomes a love interest. Also unofficial husbando. Kyousuke is a love-interest. Simon would be a husbando if he wasn't underage. But I tend to ship him with... people no one would want him to be shipped with. Tom-- besides ShizuoxVerona, I ship Tom pretty hard with Shizuo since it makes a lot of sense to me. Besides pretty much being me, that's what I associate Tom with.
Serge is all about love. :U

The best are both.

I would say characters are my favorite when I could see myself having fun with them.

Any character you'd be rather freaked out by or bored to be around probably would not be the favorite choice.

Several Reasons. For me, i either like inspiring characters like Sakata Gintoki or Honda Goro or grounded characters like Oreki. Or they're quirky, like Yotsuba and Araragi or just badass/have interesting philosophies, like Johan or The Count of Monte Cristo.

I like not-so-innocent gurls unlike your typical waifu.

God - tinkle tinkle hoy!
Darth Vader - no reason.
Sherlock - high functioning sociopath.
Kotetsu - the most normal male character in my favorites.
Celty - the most normal female character in my favorites, albeit headless.
Sophia - a genius who bore many children from many guys.
Yuri - slutty.
Mine Fujiko - slutty. Uses her body to get wealth.
Ryuuko - slutty. Gets orgasm from seeing violence/powerful guys.
Sonoshee - busty.

Nothing really specific, if I find I like a character, I'll just like them.

So you like female characters that are the complete opposite of what you like in male characters?
And I mean that in the most sexually painful way possible.

My favorites all generally thoughtful and aware of things around them to various extents. The thing that makes me like them though are how they respond, whether by wide-eyed curiosity, passive acceptance, sarcastic apathy, or utter dissatisfaction. Besides that, they're also characters whom made their respective shows a joy to watch.

Shichika: An interesting take on a "dumb" protagonist; he's merely ignorant rather than stupid; he's also absurdly overpowered. His character development and inter-character development were part of what made Katanagatari so great, imo.

Holo: One of the most unique women I've seen in anime. She's smart, witty, and independent, yet still manages to have normal human fears and desires which keep her relatable. Her dialogue was a joy to watch.

Killua: Again, excellent character development. His true nature becomes more apparent as the anime progresses. I ended up perceiving him very differently from my first impressions.

Okabe: Steins;Gate takes an over-the-top loser and turns him into a legitimately sympathetic and occasionally awesome protagonist. His dialog is fun to listen to as well.

Vash the Stampede: Technical pacifism taken to its logical extreme. He's a rather veiled person both figuratively and literally. He's rather sympathetic all around, but he holds his own for the most part. His character development is practically the whole point behind Trigun.

Luffy: Dedicated but silly, strong but dependent, and loyal but reckless; I can't think of anything personality-wise that would be of note, and very little is noteworthy development-wise. Still, I like his idealistic viewpoint and he's just plain fun-to-watch most of the time. He does seem to have matured a bit over the course of the story.

To be honest, the order isn't set in stone. If I thought about it enough on any given day I could mix it up. Okabe is probably the one I'd be most likely to remove in the future. I guess you could summarize my favorites as characters that develop in a unique way or who are unique in some way from the outset. I like "different". Luffy is an exception I suppose. Unusual dialog seems to be a recurring theme as well.

Apart from the Major, Grimmer and Kanzaki, all my favourite characters are just straight up awesome. Their personalities tend to be over the top and hilarious or just straight up cool.

As for the 3 that aren't that, I feel they're just very well done characters.

That question isn't as easy to answer as I thought it would be, but I guess what it comes down to is that I simply loved everything about each of them, be it their voice actors, their personality, their character design or really anything you can think of. It just felt like the right thing to consider them "favourites", I suppose.
